109246, 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I just wanted to start a thread on our turbo project named Pink Pixi.

She started out as a normal 1995 RS eclipse 5 speed with a broken timing belt.

We bought her for $250.00 from a friend of mine.

As soon as we got her home I asked my husband if he could make her go PSHHHT?

He was like yeah but its going to cost us alot of money and take some time to do it right.

My husband is a mechanic/master fabricator with a degree in computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Here is what has been done to her so far:

BLOCK:

Cleaned, decked, line bored, pressure checked and painted pink

Wiseco Piston 88.00mm (+.020 Overbore)
8.8:1
Eagle Rods
New crank (knife edged)

ARP main/girdle Studs

Balanced the rotating assemble

HEAD:

cleaned, decked, line bored, pressure checked and painted purple

Upgraded Lifter Lash Adjusters

Cometic MLS Head Gasket

ARP Head studs

SBI Rocker Arms

SBI Valve guides

PEP Stainless Steel Valves

Stage 3 Head port (loss of low end, gain on top end)

Crower Performance level 5 - Stage 3 - Full Race Camshafts

Crower Springs/retainers

Transmission:

Built by royal transmission with heavy duty parts (01 neon with an lsd)

Fuel:

850cc PTE injectors
Warb 255 HP fuel pump
-8 up -10 down fuel lines
Custome built fuel rail
Aeromotive 1:1 FPR

Turbo/induction system:

T67 0.81 A/R P Trim Turbo Charger, Oil Cooled, 0.81 Turbine 3" Inlet & 3" Outlet 400-500 HP Rating
2.5 IC piping
FMIC 2.5 in 2.5 out
TiAL Q BOV
Custom intake manifold top half with fully ported bottom half
2nd gen throttle body with FIAV delete (egr deleted)

Exhaust:

Hasnt been built yet but it will be a full mandrel 3" with no cat (fake cat, we dont have emissions here)

That is all I can think of right now but I know there is more that I am forgetting hehe.

OH!!! and we have the super 420a Megasquirt from RS AutoSports too. (using it as a full stand alone with no factory ECU)

I have a lot of pics if anyone wants to see them.

I'll take some new pictures as soon as my husband is done taking out the ecu harness.

He is in the process of removing the harness completely but retaining all of the stock funtions that the car came with, so it is kind of a chore sorting it all out.

Here are the pictures of the motor that I posted in the introductions forum, it looks different now :P

All of the blue is gone and the intake, fuel rail, t-body, ic piping are differant and the FPR is an aeromotive now.

Got rid of the MSD Dis II too.

OK, I have a few up to date shots of the progress that is being done. Dont mind the mess and the RED elbow, I just used it for the picture.

Here is a shot of the new intake manifold with the 2g 4g63 t-body and a the fuel rail that was built also.

I am loving the car as I get to see it finally getting worked on again and moving towards a completion.

Same stuff just different angle and distance.

A shot from the front.

And a few closer shots of the rail

It's getting there :)

Where did you get that intake from? And the 4g63 TB and fuel rail was it hard to make it work??
109296, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
My husband built the intake, exhaust and fuel rail. Tbody was easy with the intake being built for it. A tps is 5v ref , signal, ground. It's just wiring it up.
109297, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by rst_eclipse, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Should do a write up on the fuel rail and the tb!!
109299, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
You mean how he built them?

My husband owned his own custom fab shop for over 10 years.

Right now he is removing the stock gauge cluster and setting up all aftermarket gauges in a custom plate in the stock location. (I saw it on youtube and told him I wanted that hehe)

I would love to see a write up from someone on how to make a custom intake manifold. I've seen a few custom manifolds here and there, but not much on what went into designing and making them.

My husband drew this up for you guys and hopes it helps for those who wanted it.

Whats your HP goal? Looks like a record could be set with this! Also are you using MegaSquirt on it? Solid lifters? and Xtreme performance sells a more aggressive cam I believe. http://www.xtremefabrications.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=53_67&products_id=198

Also that's a lot of light pink!

not sure bout that record comment..^.. Deff an Interestng build tho.what LSD are you running? Quaife? OBX..?

I can deff say Doug at Xtreme is the man. Also interested on what EMS your planning on running.
109367, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by Dstach, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
With more custom parts maybe how about that lol. I'm curious on why you used a box style intake manifold instead of a rounded one. Those sharp corners would cause a lot of turbulence I would think.
109368, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by bluespunk, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I've seen a few people use square manifold bodies now and got curious.

Found this article on manifold design:

http://horsepowercalculators.net/intake-manifold-design/intake-manifold-design

Interesting read. It helped clear up some misconceptions I had about the proper design of an intake manifold not having any fabrication experience. For instance, I would have thought having runners flush with the bottom would cause less resistance, but it turns out that is a big no no because velocity is extremely low toward the bottom of the body. It's the only source I've read though, so I won't say without a doubt that everything in it is definitely right.
109371, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by streetlightning, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
interesting, looking at the pix now, its very tall too, its like a large box on the bottom half of the runners, i wonder how that plays with VE, not to mention, same concept as using larger IC pipes, increases spool time due to your filling a larger volume.
109372, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by Dstach, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
All I asked was why she used a square design haha. But I would do a lot of research on intake design before making one. It seems that all high hp cars have rounded tapered manifolds with the "trumpets" off the floor. The rest is based on turbo vs non turbo, displacement and a whole lot more r and d.

Also a good read bluespunk. I've read that before and its so amazing how little changes make a huge difference.
109373, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
My husband has a degree in computational fluid dynamics and he built manifold at his work based on a flow bench that they have. He built 4 different ones before he settled on that one. He use to build them for about 10 years for the 4g63 platforms. We are using mega squirt as a stand alone with methanol injection. HP goals are still on the table.
109374, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by Dstach, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Not to disrespect his degree but look at Greddy's intake for the Supra http://www.titanmotorsports.com/grinma93sutt.html or AMS for the EVO http://www.amsperformance.com/cart/AMS-Mitsubishi-Lancer-Evolution-VIII-IX-8-9-F1-I-Intake-Manifold.html they have been in the game for a long time. I would mimic their design and look over the article. You don't have to but these are just suggestions. By the way did he lift the runners off the floor? And MS2 or MS3?
109375, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I asked him about it and he smiled and told me there is a lot more to that "box" then meets the eye...I asked him what does he mean by that. He told me inside that box is a work of art.

So I will have to drag out of him this magic that he is talking about.

I'll let ya know what he says.
109376, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by Dstach, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well thats good then. Are you going to dyno tune it?
109377, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Inside the "box" the runners are velocity stacked just above the throttle body bottom , each stack is mathmaticly angled. There are air dam/defusers in place to equalize the air flow across all four runners.
The "box " evenly distributes air up to 40psi. There are no actual dead flow spots inside.

A lot of companies make great products but if you can build one that can perform the same why not?

Will she be on a dyno? Absolutely!!! :)

I just want him to finish it so I can drive it.
109379, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by Dstach, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Everyone lately makes me want to put my 2.4 back in and tune it! Stupid collage class came to fast haha! The forums on here and people at some little car meets really make you want to do it. O well school is more important.

May be too late but did you consider this? http://www.2gnt.com/?d=1/2_inch_ARP_headstuds
109381, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by streetlightning, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
id go ms3. ether way, have fun with tuning. there so much flexibility.
that way you can tun sequential injection as well. i love the clean look and function of full standalone, but the tuning is kicking my ass. i hope Erik can hook it up : )

I know it has a mls head gasket and my husband showed me how he O RINGED the block but I am not sure what head studs he used , I am pretty sure he told me a while back that it had ARP head studs in it...but like I said I am not sure what ones he used.
109384, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by Dstach, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
O ringed the block? Can you get more details on that? I never heard of it but it sounds interesting. The ARP's I showed you are the half inch ones. They are beefier than the off the shelf ones. But you have to bore the bolt holes and re thread
109387, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
With off the shelf ARP head studs and a good O ring setup you have enough clamping force to handle 30-40psi.

My Husband runs 35-40psi in his eclipse and has done so for over 10 years.

Here is a pic of an o ring setup.

Here is the Tool that can do this.
109389, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by Dstach, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
So its the o ring plus MLS? Thats neat! I've never seen it before.
109391, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
yes.

Some people use the copper wire, others have used SS wire although they both seem to hold up just fine either way.
109410, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade

The build is getting close to being done, I am getting excited.
109478, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade

How is this build coming? The thread kinda went dead.
109479, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade

Been really busy but have some up dates when I get a chance to upload the pictures.
109480, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by Dstach, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Awesome. I was hoping the project wasn't scrapped. I'm still waiting for a dyno run haha.
109529, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
No, the project has NOT been scrapped by any means lol.

We have just been really busy as of late.

The motor side is now 98% complete and we only have a little more to do on the interior to get her running.

The list is short as far as actual things that need to be done.

Time permitting we will be working on the car this weekend and see what we can get done.
109540, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by eclipse420ags, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Cool, I was wondering what happened to this one to.
109542, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
My husband finally got around to putting the seats in. The dash cluster is not a full aftermarket set-up like I wanted but it will do just fine for now.

He still has'nt taken the time to do the exhaust yet :(

The car is about 90% drive ready, I am so excited.
109556, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by eclipse420ags, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
If exhaust is the only thing left it shouldnt take any time at all!
109559, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
There is a little more then exhaust, but it shouldn't take much more time once we find the time LOL

There is a lot of cosmetic things that are on the list of things to do, none of which will prevent it from running. (will prevent me from driving it though hehe)

You got any pics of this or during the process of making it? Im making one too with all digital gauges

My husband decided to keep the stock cluster, but added 2 gauges into the cluster itself, and the led for the knock sence. :p we also added to gauge pod that puts one gauge on each side.

Been a long time.
Hiya folks, my husband built me an 04 forester xt. So I gave pink to our son and my husband and son are changing the colors and finishing it together as his first car. Hehe
109794, RE: 420a Turbo upgrade
Posted by PinkPixi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well, its been a few years and I thought I would give an update lol
My son and husband have redone most of the motor color wise and changed the intake manifold, fuel rail and exhaust manifold, they changed to an a2w intercooler setup also.

The motor is now blue with no more pink :(

They redid the fuel lines and fuel filter while they were at it and powder coated the wheels too.

Let me know if ya want to see pics.
