Just a question for you guys to hear you thoughts on a true ceramic coating like Swaintech on a turbine housing? I've heard that its an awesome idea but I've also heard of the turbo not being able to dissipate enough heat and actually destroying the turbo, down to even over heating the shaft and snapping it in two. Thoughts on this???

Hmm, can't say we've ever dealt with that one (me and my DSM/Honda turbo buddies). 'Da boys coat turbo's all the time and we've never had (that I know of) a heat retention problem. We're talking from street/strip 14's to full strip low 9's.

I've always considered coating to be beneficial (disclaimer: as you say PROPERLY done).

my log mani is jet hot sterling coated and has held up perfectly. heat is WAYY down in the engine bay. I'm seriously considering getting my new turbine coated w/ jet hot 2000 (black) rather than their heatshield or some other insufficient method

jet hot coat - $150
turbonetics shield - $109
new turbo beanie - $60

might as well spend a little more and have it ceramic coated not only on the outside, but on the inside as well (minus the areas that must maintain tight turbine shaft tolerances)

i'm sure you've seen the mani.. it's coated in extreme sterling (only 1800 max degrees), but turbo hot sides need hotter coat, like the 2000

I'll post the first pic, but i dont wanna flood this thread with other pics, so i broke the ends of em lol.. I say don't skimp and go for top dollar

Yeah, I'm not so worried about the manifold as I am the turbine housing retaining heat. And as far as coating the inside of the manifold/turbine housing...I'm not going to do that. If that stuff starts to flake it goes right into the turbo. Here is a quote from dsmtuners, "4k miles old. Developed in and out play but no side to side. Sent it back in and they said it overheated or something. Blue on shaft. Subsequently, they lost my turbo along with the turbine housing.". I'm just scared of coating the housing and having the same issue and killing a turbo. Manifolds/downpipes I have no doubt, I want to get them done but the exhaust housing...well see I guess. Thanks for the replies so far.

i was kinda worried about that too and if it would void the warranty if it were coated by jet hot. after calling turbonetics, they let me know that it doesn't void the warranty, so i'm sure if it's coated with 2000+ then it shouldn't flake, even in extreme lean/hot conditions. they even have a 2500+ coating

I would think that a turbo blanket would hold more heat in the housing and I haven't heard of anyone having trouble using them. So a coating should be fine.

zac I won't be using it anymore, but if you want my turbo beanie I had installed previously, you can have it. I had mine jethot coated so I don't need it anymore

it does have a hole or two on the side of it from where exhaust gases blew through a leak in the exhaust flange (1/2" hole), but still witholds tons of heat. txt me if you want it

There is no proof heat coating destroy turbo's sooner. I have always coated mine and never had a failure.

curious, how much under-hood heat reduction did you have?

The S25g I got from John had the exhaust housing ceramic coated by Jethot but it still got hot as fuck under the hood, I have been really looking into swaintech coatings as from what I've seen works the best as far as temp control... its just a bit pricey.

Hard to say how much the underhood temp dropped but my intake temps dropped 10-15*. I had the high heat Grey coating. From what I understand the Silver does not withstand as high of a heat as the grey does but you would want to verify that.

The Equal length mani raised my underhood temps when I built that. Reason is obvious though, all the additional surface area. That mani I only wrapped with DEI heat wrap. My intake temps cruising were typically 108* and sitting in traffic were 113*. At the same time you have to realize I had SS intercooler piping which will absorb heat and stay hot longer than alum piping will. My intake temp sensor was in my Intake Manifold so at the same time there is a error percentage due to the sensor becoming heat soaked. I never got around to moving the sensor into the piping where it will read the most accurate. Chances are the lean condition I would get at idle on very hot days was becuase the sensor was heat soaked and not reading accurately. Food for thought.
