10849, Stage 2 for auto
Posted by rfitz88, Oct-17-01 04:03 PM
What do you guys think of a stage 2 turbo on an automatic.
I have a 98 Gs auto. Do you think it's a waste of money or will it have close to the same results as a 5 speed.
Any suggestions helpful

I'll give u some advice. Sell your auto and buy a stick. Then buy a turbo kit. It will save you a lot of money.

for sure a stick will be able to have power sooner then a auto stock or turboed... the difference is a couple 100 rpm ..for sure off the line a auto will take a while to get power ... if he were to sell his non turbo auto for a stick auto that is a waste of money it's like saying, sell your nt and buy a turbo come on now... to get into 13s you need around close to 300hp give or take ... i am going to be a hrc stage two AUTO this week and the only prob is i will not be able to take off the line as fast as a stick but in the long run i will kick butt...
some people may not want to drive stick all the time i have another car that is stick which i drive and i dont like to drive it everyday just my feedback

I have drive a slushbox, and I also realize that to get into the 13's with my car, I would have to spend an arm and a leg. To get a 420a with a manual transmission into the 13's would make it much easier on the wallet. But, hey, if you have money to burn, and are going the same route as Pure Rage, go for it.

people make it sound a lot worse than it is, on a 5 spd you would need to eventually change the clutch, on the auto you'd need a shift kit (a little more than clutch) and if you really want faster et's you'd need to have your torque convertor modified ($200 plus some downtime) or a new convertor($800).
Only thing is with the torque convertor the car will be more sluggish for daily driving till you hit the power zone.

With a stage 2 at 5psi you might break into the 14's.

all i know is that i've been in Joe's car...and I likes alot! I think it's fast as hell! I'd recommend it! Auto or no auto...a turbo kit always makes the difference! :)

Autos aren't fast at all of the line, thats is the problem. After about 3k RPMS we will keep up with a manual. I have raced many 5spd eclipses from about a 40mph drop and usually stay side by side and once in a while I pull. I could care less what my car gets in the 1/4 if I had an auto with a turbo kit because I know if Im cruisin along and someone wants you race you while you are rolling it would be about the same as if you had a manual.

I would suppose a 75 shot of nitrous would be in the same ballpark speed wise as a stage 1 1/2 ? hehe anyway, my nx kit will be installed and we'll see what an auto can do with a few mods and nitrous (turbo being similar). I'll post time slips as soon as I get them next weekend....

I know autos are slower than manuals, but I'm willing to wager that the difference is negligible after some good mods anyway.. plus I rather have my right hand on some sweet ass thigh or around my girl than on a stick =)

I think you should go for it. With other cars' automatic trannies, the choice may be more questionable, but I think the 420a auto is a pretty solid slushbox. I've ridden in auto 420a's before, and they respond well, and like to rev.

If someone could find someway to by-pass the rev-limiter on the auto...that would really make it something.

I have a HRC stage 2 auto 8 psi. I am very happy with it. off the line is slow, but after the turbo spool up it's really fast. I only do rolling start, no stop light racing for me. run 13's will be hard on stage 2 auto. BTW, I am runing on stock exhaust -alot restirction- bad for turbo spooling up. hope it will be faster after I get my 3" exhaust done.
