Hey I installed the MSD ignition and Tach Adapter. Went to start it and it wouldn't start. Triple checked all the wiring. Everything was fine. I disconnected the Tach Adapter, hook everything up and the car starts right up. The only thing is, I have a CEL code 43 Ignition coil #1 / #2 primary circuit Harness and connector / Ignition coil #1/#2 Ignition coil / Spark plugs / Ignition circuit /

So I call MSD Tech and Jay says Hmm, sounds like a bad tach adapter, get a new one. So today I go back to Automotive Engineering and they switch the Tach Adapter and I come home and install it. Car won't start again. I call MSD again and Jay gets on the phone again. I tell him everything, he thinks for a second, tells me to turn ALL the switches except the Waste Spark off and try to start. Same thing, no start. So Jay says, hmm I guess you should just take the Tach Adapter out and not use it. I ask him, so whats the problem here, he says I don't know. What the hell do I do now? I already get a CEL for the EVAP bullshit, I was going to try to fix that soon, Now I have the stupid CEL for the MSD too!!

Any ideas?

dont you need 2 tach adapters for the msd-dis2?

Yeah, i think you need 2 tach adapters, I read that in the manual... Fast 420a, I have the MSD DIS-2, but it was installed on the car when I bought it so I dont know jack about it. If you tell me what to look for, I can tell you how mines wired or something..... If that helps... Also, Mark has the DIS-2, forget his screen name here, RSX99BOY, I think thats it, his email is imapunk@megsinet.com, he just installed his DIS-2 and it's probably still fresh in his mind.

Well the manual that came with it and MSD Tech support both say the DIS-2 needs 1 tach adapter. I thought it was two also. The wiring could be put together by a 3 year old so I know that's all correct. . . FUCK IT, I am gonna take back the adapter and get my $50 back and buy a Sack and smoke it and forget about the CEL I have.

98 GS HRC Stage V (nuff said)

make sure that the tach atapter isn't hooked up backwards (i.e. green wire crossed with white wire (it would be half near impossible to do that with the connectors they give, but it is possible), and make sure that the power and ground to the tach adapter are good. The power shoudl be hooked up to the power to the MSD on the harness.......there should be a plug for it. and the ground shoudl be a good ground to the frame. The tach adapter is just to suply the right resistance to the computer so it doesn't think there is a short in the coil. I am not 100% sure if that causes any changes in the timing curve, but it might.

Yeah I double checked the wiring and it was all fine. I even connected the adapter directly to the battery to see if I had a bad ground or the possitive lead out of the MSD DIS-2 was bad. Nothing I do is gonna make the tach adapter work so fuck it.

When I installed mine the same thing happened until I bought the 2 adapters instead of hooking up the one. I can't remember the part number for the 2, but Ill look and let you know if you are interested.

Im really not sure off the top of my head. Im at work right now and don't have the diagrams. I remember talking to the MSD tech and asking him about it, and he said it was a mistake that they sent the one tach adapter, instead of the 2. They then mailed the 2 for free. So you may want to ask them about this if you call them again. I will look for the diagrams in the morning and let you know what I find.

I have the Programable DIS-2 and mine is pretty much doing the same thing. (the car won't start) We did some tests and the ignition is only firing one coil (plugs 1+4) could you guy's do the "spark check test" and see what ya find??

Oh and Bill Hahn said we NEED the tach adapter for the right resistance so our igniton timming works. So I would not recomend driving without it. Or just call Bill :)

Okay thats nice but my car doesn't start with it on there but it does with out it so that really doesn't do me any good.

What I heard is the tach adapter is just to keep the CEL off but I already have a CEL so oh well.

Any word on this? on trying to install mine right now. it will start with the 1 tach adapter, but its flooding cylinders 2 and 3. i have the second tach adapter, but im not sure how to hook it up.

BlackVenge, That's exacally what mine is doing....cylinders 2+3 are not fireing. (the plugs are black) Anyone tried two tach adapters?? We need to figure out this problem.

P.S. - BlackVenge, What year is your car? Mine is a 99. Armond and Chris (murix) had no problems with there installs and I belive they both have 97 models

Call MSD and try telling them you have a Neon and see what they tell you for the tach adapters. I called and told them I had an eclipse and I was told 1 tach adapter. I told him it was the chrysler engine and he didn't say anything. I am gonna try calling them again later when I get home.

Ive got a 96, but there shouldnt be any difference between the 95-00 model years

just got off the phone with msd, (told them i had a neon like you said) i didnt get anywhere with them. he said the tach adapter was bad and to send it back where i bought it from. i dont think thats it, cause i tried the other tach adapter i bought and still had the same problem.

Was it Jay that you talked to? He told me the same thing, bad adapter, take it back. I have adapter number 2 that also didn't work sitting at the house. I am really frustrated with this shit right now, I don't know what to do...

Ok i had the same problem with mine. It is one of the wires that come out of the box that has to be grounded that does not need to be. It does not tell u this in the instructions but i called them when i was putting mine on and they told me not to ground the two wires that are left over i think they are baby blue and brown just cap them off and dont ground them. it should work fine after that

I think I know what your talking about. The two wires on mine are cap'd off like you said and still nothing.....I E-mailed Bill Hahn on our topic and I hope he gets back to me or posts here. I'll keep ya updated.

The brown and blue wires do not need to be grounded. They need a switch to ground. The Brown one is the safety feature ignition cut so no one can steal your car. You want to run this wire in to the car somewhere and hide a switch and run it to ground. When the switch is on, the car won't start. No one can start your car unless they know about the switch. The blue one is the 2 step rev limit for staging at the track. This switch needs to be a momentary contact switch run to ground. When this switch is held on, the car has the lower staging rev limit. Mine is at 4000 rpm for good launches right in the powerband of the cams. Right now I don't have the tach adapter (1) hooked up and the car runs fine, it just has a CEL. If anyone has a DIS-2 with no CEL, give me the part number of your tach adapter(s) and how many you have and how they are wired up so I can call Jay at MSD and tell him how it needs to be so he can actually help people down the road.

yeah, he was the guy i talked to. he told me to fiddle with all the switches cause they sometimes get stuck, he told me to turn everything off except the waste spark, and nothing. hopefully hahn will get back to you. this really sucks, you think that a company as reputable as msd would have some decent tech support, or at least know about their products so they can actually help people. i wonder how much money msd loses per year, with all the shit that they say "send it back its probably broken" oh well
