10772, HRC Stage I? Posted by Tanqueray201, Oct-16-01 06:26 AM
Hi all,
I'm the proud owner of a newly purchased '96 Eagle Talon, (5-spd base model). As finances permit, I will probably be looking to have an HRC Stage I installed. Here's my reasoning:
1. I'm going with Stage I because I need something that is as low-maintenance as possible, and I'm guessing that a Stage I will have a lot less stress on an engine than a Stage II. I know absolutely nothing, zilch, zero, nada about working on cars. 2. I'm going with HRC because because, as I understand, it makes superior low-end power compared to the Star setup. A lot of my driving will be on city streets, not exactly giving much opportunity for seeing redline. I may be looking to do a little bit of autocross, but no serious racing. Also, the fact that HRC just lowered their prices doesn't hurt! I guess one negative with the HRC set-up is that if I ever decide to upgrade to a Stage II, I think it's supposed to involve irreversible modification to the car. I was hoping down the road to be able to pull out the turbo kit and sell it separately if I ever decide to sell the car, which I guess won't be an option with HRC.
Do you think I'm making the right choice? Any comments?
Also, can someone recommend a shop near Jersey City, NJ to do the installation?
Thanks,
Gilbert

If this is the case, then I would suggest postponing the turbo purchase until you know more about your car. Get a good feel for how it drives, where everything is, and what everything is. Pick up some books on basic car stuff. Start doing some maintenance yourself. Ask questions. Get really familiar with your car and build a knowledge base. There are alot of little things that can go wrong when you do something big like a turbo kit. Turbo kits, alter most of the important systems on the car. The shop could forget something, or a bolt could loosen, whatever...then you could have a poorly running or dead car. You really do need some knowledge and skills before venturing into turbo territory. Luckily, knowledge is easy to obtain, skills can be learned, and there are people that can help (us).

i agree... even though i dont have a turbo im still getting a feel for it... Do only what your comfortable with. If you would like to do some mods to your car I would recommend getting an cold air intake-allows colder air in your engine, and something called an Under drive pulley(UDP), and an exhaust system. By the time you get those things done, I think you will be ready

get an exhaust, a ram-air style intake and a UDP now. you can reuse all of them with the turbo once you get it. and the onyl modification i am aware of that is irreversible on stage two is the cutting of the fenderwell. you can sell a car with a cut fenderwell, its no biggie. the downpipe has to be cut on either stage kit.

Stage II is good, there are no irrevesible things done with the stage II with side mount that will prevent you from selling the car later that a stage I wont do. ALthough, if you have ABS on your ride then the side mount will not fit and you will have to do a front mount. Which has that selling problem later. BOth kits you will have to drill hole in oil pan (if sold you will need one without a hole in it) and both require the cutting of the downpipe (also will need another if you sell without the turbo later). Other than that, they are pretty simliar. Only difference is the side mount which easily bolts where the horn is and horn is moved to the other side of frame. NO BIG DEAL. I vote stage II. Good luck!!

Thanks to everybody for your advice.
Maybe I'll eventually go with a Stage II afterall. In the meanwhile, I better make sure I take the time to figure out all these gadgets and widgets under my hood! I suppose I am rushing things a bit, especially since it's been six years since I've last owned a car (moved to the New York City area where it isn't a necessity). As I get more familiar with the car, I'm sure I'll get comfortable with more involved mods.

Well I and II are pretty similar in terms of durablity, so if you get stage II and leave the boost low it will be best for the life of your engine. I think tuning is the same for both stages, only differnt values, even at 1 psi if you tune wrong you're huring your engine.
