I have a hahn set up, and i dont have any bolts on my compression housing so i cant do the cooking pot mod, so i was going to build a shield that would connect to my manifold via 2 standoffs and to bolts. my question is, is 18ga SS a good choice, i believe so since it should keep in heat and not dissipate it at a crazy rate. the other question is, if it sits about an inch off my manifold, and an inch or so all the way around the cartrage, will i need to worry about the heat my heater core is seeing, or the block to head interface, since more heat will be "traped" in there?
distance from t-stat and heater core ok?



i just dont want the heat from under the shield to warp the head/block interface or melt/heat up my heater core and tstat

hey 420agreenvilleSC is there a place you would recommend for cermaic coating? i cant seem to find a local shop so ill just have to ship out my downpipe and manifold. thanks

i was gonna do jethot, but they're too expensive. Just try calling numerous local shops. ask them if they do it, or if they know anyone who does. Got mine coated w/ the same material jethot uses for $75. You might can even have it done by them too, just ship it to them. Call around first.

i guess i should mention mines ceramic coated as well, i just want to know if it will have negative effects on my t-stat ect.. its more of a cleaning up the engine bay.. my coating is a little duller then it used to be.

ug.lol.. the heat shield would cover the manifold,(pic 1) thus get hot b/c its connected to the manifold, the shield would be like 1/4" or 1/2" away from the heater core and t-stat housing, thus i was wondering if the radiant heat from the heat shield would cause a problem to those components

nope. only problem you'll have is the 5/8, or is it 5/16"?, heater hose 4 inch section. that gets weak no matter what people do. you'll be fine

You're in Mass so I strongly recommend Northeast Coatings in East Berlin, Ct. 860-656-7759. These guys are good. Done many many parts for people I know. Recently did my 10.5 pistons. Came out nice. Talk to Al. Tell him you got their name off of CCDSM (Connecticut Club DSM where they are a sponsor). May help you with pricing.

If you can figure out a way to securely attach it, then do it. The manifold and turbo get hot enough that radiant heat from them are an issue. That little rubber hose is especially vulnerable. Don't worry about the thermostat housing. A stainless sheet will reflect the radiation and trap a layer of air between it and the manifold/turbo to reduce convection. When I had an HRC kit, I bent the tab on the heater pipe to allow a sheetmetal panel to be bolted to it. It worked well, but only covered the manifold.

i was thinking tack on 2 threaded stand off on the mani, and then bolt the heat shield onto the standoffs..?

If you weld anything to the manifold, you create a stress riser that might eventually result in a crack. It might be fine, but it is an unnecessary risk. I use something like this:

It rattles a little, but I can't hear it when I'm driving.

how would you implement something like that for the 'star' mani? there aren't any breaks in the mani where you can loop something around it...

Yep, you do need an individual runner to wrap the wire around. I would probably try to use one of the head studs to nut some sort of bracket(s) to. The brackets could be aluminum and the heat sheild could be pop-rivited to the brackets.
