106714, Crane 12's...something i noticed.
Posted by Warmage12, Jun-20-09 10:11 PM
I had my hands on a set of crane 12's the other day and i started compareing them with a set of stockers i had layin around. I lined the intake cams side by side and got a gander at the "improveeeedness" of the cranes over the stockers, then i did the same with the exhaust. But this time something caught my eye. I had them lined up with the peg holes, located in the camshaft used for lineing the intake and exhaust cams up for installation with the valvecover off. Well what i saw was on the cranes the peg holes used to line up the camshaft position magnet were in a position different, advanced/retarded, compared to the ones on the stocker.

IMO it seems that crane built in a physical retard for the 12's, being as they are a nitrous grind i think, or am i just crazy, or both. :p

I'm gona try and get some pictures of the two lined up again to see if i'm crazy or if its true, and if its true maybe we can figure out how much and what kind of alteration it is.

Any oppinions on this?

Without an experienced hand and a dial indicator, micrometer, and a degree wheel eyeing the lobes is not going to tell you much.

I'm pretty sure degreeing them wouldn't change it. Its the actual cam position magnet thats altered, not the lobes. I expect the lobes to be different. Degreeing the cams would only change the valve timing. Im talking about and actual igntion retard built into the cams by altering the camshaft positions sensors magnet. It seems to me that you'd have to drill new mounting holes in the cam end if you want the "stock" CPS reading, aka stock ignition timing.

I'm tryin to get picks but i can't find my camera.

Heres it circled on the caps page.

I always knew Warmage was smarter than Crane.

Not to mention the thousands of people who are using Crane cams on Neon/420A applications with no problems.

you sure they weren't 420A Neon cams? the Neon cams are completely different where the magnet bolts on and will not time properly on an Eclipse. I ran into this where a buddy of mine had a motor built for him and the shop installed Neon Crane turbo cams and the car wouldn't run right at all. after inspecting the timing and such, found that the cam lobes were in the wrong position with it timed right and realized they were Neon cams.

Did not even think of this.

Warmage, you may have Neon cams.

Ummm...noooo. They are NOT neon cams. They run fine. The car just feels a good bit less torquey (sp?) than with the stock cams. There are other things that indicate the cams are better and have improved the performance but it just doesn't feel the same down low. I don't think its cause the power isn't there, i just think its cause Crane has a built in a bit of timing retard. All i wanna know is if anybody could, maybe if its not too much trouble and if they have them, do the same thing and check them. Just compare a set of crane 12's against a set of stockers. If what i found is true then all we gotta do is find out how much timing they added, remove it from the base and get back to stock. It help eliminate a bit of quessing.

Heres the proof they aren't neonsss.

I run 12's but i always felt my power drop off at 6,500rpm.

Power band should fall off around there with stock timing what it is. My old dyno chart with stock cams, the engine falls on its face after 6k-6100. But this is in the bottom end that i feel it. Something i've always liked about the 420a. Pretty fuckin spunky down low. Even if it doesn't show on a dyno chart. That's what leads me to believe that the crane 12's have a bit of a ignition timing retard in them. IF ONLY I COULD FIND MY DAMN CAMERA WE COULD SETTLE THISSSS. ARGGGGGG!:wallbash

Cam magnet doesn't control ignition timing.

Now see, that changes things. Finally someone read the post and found an answer. Thanks Dark.
