this car is giving me a headache. i just replaced the transmission a month ago!

on my way into work this morning, i noticed my car seemed as though it wasnt boosting in 1st gear, but all the others it would. So i come to stoplight and get on it in 1st and it spooled up but my boost gauge showed no boost. just stopped at 0. then i realize right after doing this that there is a ticking noise which seems to be coming from the turbo. when in neutral there is no noises so its not the engine (atleast i hope not) but when im driving its a tick tick tick that speeds up as i accelerate. is the turbo blown? there also seems to be a tiny bit of oil thats getting into my intake (i have a clear hosing).

any information would help. thanks again guys.

Could also be the exhaust manifold gasket, it will definitely make a strong ticking noise if it's not tight. You may have snapped some studs/bolts or something there.

wouldnt the manifold make the ticking noise though if the car was in neutral and revved up?

The manifold will not tick. Period. It has no moving parts. You may be hearing valvetrain noise if your mating surfaces are not sealed properly. Make sure the exhaust manifold gasket isn't hosed up, and that you've tightened all the nuts on your studs to spec. (I'm assuming you used studs instead of bolts)It is always prudent to recheck/retorque after a week or so after installation.

Also, check for a boost leak.

Some oil in the intake tract is normal. Does the turbo smoke?

the turbo smokes a bit. seems to be coming from one of the oil lines. i just went out for my lunch in my car and now theres no ticking at all and boosting fine. i hate problems that fix themselves, because its inevitable that it will happen again.

Its not the moving parts that make the ticking noise. Its the exhaust gases escaping. It is often confused with lifter tick or rod rap, lol.

Could it happen when in gear and not happen at free rev? Possible, it may be that your boost builds up enough pressure so that it would make the ticking noise, while free reving there is no boost pressure.

hey i figured it out. driver side radiator fan is nearly busted out of the shroud. and when i accelerate, the fan is moving and catching on something, so when i hit the accelerator and the engine moves, it is causing this contact. thanks guys.

Good job, I love to see people that like to dig into problems without asking trillions of questions.

Curious as to what it was hitting though?
