EGT question...
the autometer egt only goes to 1600. ive heard that egt readings are linear, and putting the probe in the downpipe is still accurate, just 150-200*F lower than it would be in the probe. If true, that makes the autometer egt actually usable, hehe.
how accurate is putting the egt probe in the dp?
also, anyone know how long the probe wire is that comes with the greddy egt gauge?

Why do you want to go over 1600 anyway? Isn't anything over 1600 really starting to hit the danger zone of melting parts?

quoted from Hahn: "EGT monitoring can be a very effective tool in tuning, but "ideal" EGT can vary from engine to engine dependant upon combination. Usually, 1300 to 1500 degrees F is optimal for normally aspirated engines on gas, while gas turbos will run optimally @ 1500 to 1650. An important note: this is measured before the turbo, not after, as the turbo will reduce EGT by an average 200 degrees F. "
so if at the end of a run, its normal to run 1600-1650*...wont the egt gauge always be pegged...and if so, i dont understand the benefit for tuning using the autometer egt.
so, is it ok to have the probe in the downpipe? are egt readings truely linear, so that even tho the temp is 150*-200* less after the turbo, it will always be roughly the same difference?

Yea, my Autometer EGT is in the #4 runner in the manifold and I never hit 1600. The highest temp I hit under long boost runs is about 1570. Also, I would still mount the probe on the manifold like most people... If nothing else, just to be safe since you know for sure what those numbers are supposed to be. Besides, it will give you a more accurate reading anyway since very little heat can be dissipated in a span of 2". Just my $.02
