105794, What Turbo would you recommend Posted by amskater, Feb-09-09 02:35 AM
Im working on building a turbo kit for my 2gnt. Im wondering what turbos you are using and trust. Im looking for a fast spool, bigger than a 14b, and something that wont cost too much. I want to run 5-7psi. Just wanting to hear some ideas and get advice

Depending on how much power you want to make, a 16g or a t3/t4 will far support what most people can make.
For street cars, mitsu. turbos have always proved to be the most entertaining for me but than again I've daily driven a 4g63 with a 60 trim at 28-30psi. Mitsu turbos just spool quick, you have a good buffering zone should something go south, they're watercooled, and easy to tune. Not to mention, they are very very very interchangeable, meaning your mitsu manifold will accept any turbo you could want.
Do your research. Usually if you have to ask, I'd say buy a Hahn kit and call it a day.

A 16g would be perfect for what you want. I can build about 10psi at 3k and 21psi before 3.5k. Very streetable turbo and has plenty of potential if you ever build the motor.

How is he going to mount a 4g63 Mitsu manifold on his 420a motor. Dont jump the gun hear buddy...
Just get a 16g, it will be fine for all that you want.

Mike, I think he meant Mitsu turbo flange, not a 4g manifold.

Id like to get over 200hp. 250hp would be nice but dont need to go after it right away. I know if I had a 46g3 I would want an evo3 16g. What does it take to use a mitsu turbo on a 420a manifold. Ive been seeing all kinds of t3/t4 turbos but have no idea what ones would be good or that are sh*t. I figure I may upgrade later on. just want to get my kit done and be happy with it for now

another thing I wanted to ask. I saw a turbo on craigslist and wanted to hear what others thought about it. here is some info he has told me - " Used Turbonetics B-trim, turbo has about 1200miles, Garrett Housing, .63 hot, .60 cold. or the other way around, if you have a 4 cylander, Its more than your motor can handle."

Guy read my post. Hahn doesn't make a "turbo" kit for 4g63 cars.... Hence buy the Hahn kit which "stage one" comes with a 16g. I didn't say anything about putting a 4g63 exhaust manifold on a 420a, just simply that the aftermarket exhaust manifolds that I've seen(Hahn kit, IIRC) have a mitsu footprint. My bad if I stepped on your toes. Don't jump the gun on flaming the new guy "hear".

tonight I was told if I found a Hahn hotside I could use it to run a 16g on my 420a? Is this the right way to do it?

Positively yes. It's going to be a t3 style footprint, which isn't a bad thing. You can buy exhaust manifolds with that style footprint just about anywhere and and just about any price.

this is the manifold Im looking at buying only part I cant decide on is the turbo http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-99-DODGE-NEON-DOHC-420A-CAST-IRON-T3-TURBO-MANIFOLD_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1240Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a0Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem120375328509QQitemZ120375328509QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

That manifold will work fine. personally I would have some of the flanges re-machined after looking at the pics, but other than that it should work

a friend of mine offered me a 13g turbo. Any one else running a 13g that can offer any advice

105871, RE: What Turbo would you recommend Posted by SilvrEclips, Feb-12-09 03:53 PM
13g is the turbo off of the 1g autos. Its smaller than the 14b. Yes it will work and if it was free or like $20 I would probably use it for a little while and once you get your kit straight a 14b/16g would be a direct swap.

A friend would hook me up with the 13g but im thinking I might want to start off with something a little bigger and not sure if I want to go with a mitsu 16g or a t3/t4 turbo yet

what exactly would I need to do to make a 13g/14b work on a 420a? I plan on getting a Manifold off of ebay that is t3/t4.

I would personally stay away from the 13g, its about as useless as a stock 2g t-25. A 14b can be had cheap and will make 250-300whp fully cranked, but will support 190-230 with ease. The 13g only makes enough wind to produce 180-190 whp at the most.
If you plan on getting a t3 style footprint manifold and want to use a mitsu turbo, you will need the hot side/turbine housing from a Hahn turbo or re flange that t-3 manifold to a Mitsu style flange(http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DSM-Mitsubishi-16G-14B-1G-2G-4G63-turbo-flange-mild_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem120360792065QQitemZ120360792065QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories). Not to mention, you'll need provision for waterlines for the turbo and various other mistu only things.
However, a t3 footprint manifold gives you a lot of options. You don't necc. need to go with a t3/t4. A straight t3 of most variety will offer the same level of performance as most 16g turbos, and will offer close to the same spool characteristics as a 16g. Not to mention, you can pick up a used t3 unit with wastegate actuator for a song(IIRC $150 on up) depending on the unit.
Unless you buy a Hahn kit, which you aren't, I would say a t3 or t3/t4 is the way to go. I can go into depths about this subject if you want, haha.

Hey Doug, it's me - the guy you bought those springs from. These guys know what they're talking about - I would really suggest the 16g as your strongest option considering you want a budget turbo and will run low boost for now. There's a ton of experience here regarding that turbo too, since it's the turbo HRC includes with most of their NT kits. good luck

105915, RE: What Turbo would you recommend Posted by tegster, Feb-16-09 05:51 PM
Just so you know I have almost that exact same manifold just from a different seller(gmotogarageturbo) from ebay. Everything seems fine but the two bottom holes in the middle will not let you put any bolts into them. The left center one I had to grind a bit off to get a bolt in and the right center one(right below the flange) is pretty much impossible so I havent done anything with it yet.
Just a "so you know" to let you decide what to do. Its not the EXACT same manifold but probably pretty close.

Im thinking about getting a custom Manifold so I can use a mistu turbo if you were in my shoes would you A. Slap on a 14b? B. Slap on a big 16g? C. Get a Log Style Manifold with a t3/t4 50 trim?

If it was me I would go ahead and get the evo III 16g if you are going with a mitsu turbo. I have a manifold that is flanged for a mitsu turbo that I was going to use but ended up buying a Hahn manifold and turbo. If you are going to get a T flange then I would get a S20g. PM me if you want more details on the manifold.

The manifold needs to be decked and I would also cut some slits in the manifold like the new Hahn ones are to prevent it from warping. Only reason that its warped now is because it was Tig'd by a friend of mine and he didn't have a plate to bolt it to and keep it from warping. No biggie though and those pics are as of tonight...

is 200hp reachable with a Mitsu big16 at 7psi?
|
105970, RE: What Turbo would you recommend Posted by Slo2g, Feb-24-09 09:39 PM
You should be around that with a B16g or an Evo III 16g. Personal opinion would be an Evo III 16g. You could probably get away with running 9 psi on a 16g.

depends on the welds and how good they are.
