105584, HeliCoil Kit? Stripped Exhaust/Turbo Manifold Bolt Posted by HipHop615, May-13-06 08:27 AM
My car has been bogging down a lot and I wasnt sure what the problem was until I saw one of my bolts on the bottom of the turbo manifold was gone and anopther bottom one was stripped and I could untighten it with my hand, what the best way to fix the problem? Has anyone ever tried a helicoil kit? Is that my best bet? Thanks

I used a helicoil kit when i crossthreaded a bolt on my suspension. And it worked great, but I really see it as a temporary fix and not a permanant repair. In your case though, a helicoil kit would probably suffice and be a cheaper than replacing the bolt.

You can helicoil it, or just install an oversized bolt (drill then tap of course).

Ya I never used a helicoil kit, so basically with the parts given you drill a bigger hole, put in the coil insert and then put your old bolt back in???? Sorry if Im stupid about this, Thanks for the info guys. Also what do you think about this? All the local shops are out of 8MM w/ 1.25 Pitch Kits. The REAL Helicoil kits are like $50+ at Napa....

There are some steps involved...
- Drill out the stripped threads with the specified drill size - Tap using the specified helicoil tap size - Use the helicoil tool to run the helicoil in the newly tapped hole - Install your old bolt

Has anyone gone with the Ebay kit? I need to helicoil a hole in my head for the turbo manifold too. Are the Ebay kits just as good, or should we stick with local parts stores kits?
