105534, horrible luck Posted by taclipse, Dec-27-08 10:16 PM
well I just got my new setup finished and ready to hit the street. I started the car up and it ran great..... did the break in oil change. I was letting the car idle and all of a sudden i heard a weird noise and the car shut off. The bolt that held the tensioner bracket broke off and let my timing belt go. No worries because to my knowledge and past experiences my motor isnt interference with the pistons i have. I have set the timing 180* off because of these stupid cam gears before and never had an issue. Well I setup everything back up the way it was and it sounds like i have no compression.... I am devastated right now. My head has lots of work into it. Does anyone else Have 8.8:1 comp JE's, felpro 4 layer and crower 2 turbo cams? I will double check everything tomorrow to make sure i am not crazy.

Do a comp check (first triple check that you set the timing right. I'm guessing that you did already). You do have an interference engine. There is a possibility that you will need to pull the head to do bent valves.
Sorry, sucks to hear.

i guess i just got lucky the other 10 times? ive set timing wrong before and turned the motor over repeatedly and just reset timing and was good to go. The only thing that has changed is replacement je pistons and a thicker headgasket. im screwed!

That sucks man. I know its not news you would like to hear but you probbaly did bend some valves. Hopefully its just a couple. When I threw a belt once before, I only bent 4. Sorry to hear man.

Just an observation on cam timing 180* off. It APPEARS (from the 180* off posts that I have seen over the years) that if you put your intake cam off 180* (as in both dowels up. Following the 4g63 way) that you will probably not hit the pistons. That's just the luck of the lobes. If she spins without 1 cam moving, you are very likely to bend valves.
Did you do your comp check?

Did you do your comp check? nope.... i pulled the V/C and noticed rockers arms everywhere where they shouldnt be! I pulled the head in about 30 min with a buddy of mine helping. 11 bent valves. Just put an order in with howell auto. Lets hope everything goes smoothly this time so i can finally get some damn numbers!!!!

Well got the car running last night with the parts dinosasur mech. Conversion kit. It runs like ass. I have to double check timing today. It runs exactly like it did when I had vb921's and a low dwell setting but I didn't change anything in MS and it ran perfect before my timing belt incident so I am pretty sure its a timing issue.

Poor dude accidentally screws up 11 valves in his cylinder head, you come in after you havent been seen here in awhile and tell him to fix his sig. And of corse, Chris has to chime in like he always does.
Nice.

As you can tell by his reply, some people know how to take a joke... obviously you do not, nor have you ever.

Awesome man. What did you find to be the problem? You said it was running rough after you put the PD mechanical tensioner on it...

Yeah.... it was a bad connection on one of the wires at the coil. De pinned the plug and re-soldered some new wires on and voila! I am waiting on my tuner to come out and hook me up with a new street tune.

Awesome, glad to see your back up and running smoothly :thumbsup

I'm sorry to hear about that bro..sucks. I noticed your in Tampa also. I had the exact same bolt break on my car (420a) after the engine was rebuilt and bent 2 valves. Just out of curiousity, did you build the engine yourself or have a local shop build it? (if your don't mind sharing that info)

I built the entire car in my garage. I am in the brandon/valrico area.
Well I pulled the head off.... bent 11 valves. I am about to order a new set tommorrow morning. I am 100% sure my motor USED to be non interference! When i had my machine worked they decked the block therefore making the valves just close enough to now hit! I am contemplating buying a thicker headgasket to make that room up.

There is nothing you can do to make it a non interferance motor (unless you want to raise the head 3/8 of an inch. We have an interferance motor by design.

i must have been really damn lucky before. I had Aem cam gears, the adjustment bolts broke and let the cams go crazy and nothing happened. I also set timing incorrectly due to these gears before and just reset it and was good to go. Im talking set the cams 180* out and turned the motor over. thanks for the feedback guys! I am about to order new valves as we speak.

I have set the timing on my motor 180* out before too and nothing had hapened. That doesnt mean its a non intereference motor though.
