105480, Oil in intake air filter and the piping? Posted by Venz, Feb-13-07 02:40 PM
I m running the hahn stage 2 kit. Recently I noted Oil in both the intake air filter and the piping, its not fresh oil but what seems like a small build up. I really do not understand this. Can anyone shed some light?

Well, you have the valve cover breather hooked back into the intake right?

If you do have the VC breather piped back into the intake, then just unhook it, and build yourself a catchcan.

Unless your turbo oil seal is slowly going...

what you mean.. i don't think thats possible?
look at this photo

yes you have a VC filter no its not conected back to the intake
if it was just oil in the downstream side of the turbo id agree and say the oil seal is slowly going
HOWEVER, since you say its on the air filter this can be dificult if its on the outside as well as the inside of the filter, your picking oil up from the outside somewhere and you need get a new filter or at least thourghly clean the dry it and re-oil it
id hand clean the entire engine with degreaser then drive it and see if you can find any leaks or staining to show up.
most likely its somthing real simple and were overanalysing it :P
keep us updated

lol just looked at the picture again closer
by chance is there oil on or coming out of the BOV? possibly ending up where it faces the filter?
if thats so then i definatly vote for Turbo oil seal leak

i bet your seal is starting to leak from your turbo

godamnit...
no i dont think my bov blows out any oil, as I switched out my bov I checked it, and it seems clean.
there is oil in the filter and the piping, but not in the inlet of the turbo itself.

When My turbo seal started going it was the same thing. I started to burn a little oil and was not sure where it was comming from. I checked the turbo and it had no shaft play and there did not seem to be any oil in the inlet on mine either. So I assumed that it was not oil that I was burning but I must have extra fuel vapor in the exhaust due to an extreemly rich mega squirt... Long story short it was the oil seal and when I took off the IC pipes I found the oil.. Also you can have oil come out of the BOV without leaving a lot of evidence. As the pressurized air mooves up the piping it will bring some oil with it, and when the BOV opens presto oil out the BOV. But it won't look like oil has just been pouring through there if the leak is still small enough.. I would check your seals for sure. Does the car act as if it is burning oil?

Well i cant really tell if its burning oil or not, but I also have a blow-by issue with white smoke during cool idle.

White is coolant, blue smoke is oil.
Seems like you have more than one issue here buddy.

Well i don't want to say this but, i had oil in tha ait intake once
O o... and the problem was a melted piston and all the oil was going into my intake for some reason. The car wouldn't smoke, but it strarted to smoke eventually, so i changed all my pistons

do a compression test, stop messing around

Exactly, and if it comes back tip top then it's time to start checking the turbine..

Boy, that'd be one heck of a piston problem to push oil out of the intake, down the IC piping, through the intercooler, back through the compressor housing and down the inlet pipe towards his air filter. Especially since it'd be fighting against the flow of air. What'd that be....a quart an hour?lol
Hey venzz, do you have a tranny cooler hooked up on your ride?? I know you are an auto so I wondered if it could be coming from either your tranny cooler lines (or the cooler itself, depending where you would have located it) or a pin hole in one of your tranny lines going to the radiator?

nope, no tranny cooler.

According to Pete Paraska, there are three ways oil can get into your intake:
* (1) Through the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. * (2) Through the hose leading from the valve cover to the intake pipe. * (3) From an leaky oil seal in your turbocharger.
#1 is true regardless of the age of the valve. #2 is a symptom of blow-by, where oil is getting past the piston rings.
i'm a 420a owner non turbo, just wanted to help a litlle. and according do #2 with melted pistons it gt's past the piston rings to the intake
