I finally got all of the fuel system components installed for my 8-injector setup. Its running good and leak free. I've had some time lately so this week I decided to go ahead and finish this thing up. First I'd like to thank Corbin for pioneering the 8-injector setup on our manifolds. Second I'd like to point out that the "size" of this system was inspired by an article by Steve Wells - http://www.stevetek.com/R-FuelSys.html -6AN all the way through, and -8AN to tie the rails together. I will eventually get the turbo on but I decided to use an 8-injector fuel system and I wanted to install the fuel system first because it was so involved.

I'm using an Aeromotive 1000-6 regulator and a high flow Russell fuel filter. I fabricated a SS bracket to mount them on the passenger side.

To get the fuel back and forth to the tank, I used -6AN aluminum lines. The line fittings are compression-fit AN adapters. You can see they go from the filter and fpr through the slot between the frame and suspention brackets - all the way to the back - right before the tank.

The tank outlet has a -6AN thread fitting on it. It's actually not a JIC fitting, but it has the same thread size as -6AN. So I used some teflon tape and tightened it down good. It works. The return is a different story. It's a puny little line and that just wouln't do. So I modified the tank lid by installing a -6AN 90deg bulkhead fitting. It turns out that the best place to install it is right underneath where the outlet line is - so i had to bend the outlet line out of the way for clearance. Seems to do the trick -6AN in and out. I left the old return inlet on there and just capped it off.

I know I've posted a bit about my manifold before, but I've changed ISPs and that thread doesn't bring up the pics anymore so I'll put a couple of pics here. I bought a spare manifold and did all of the fabrication myself - Drilled the injector bosses, made a bracket for the secondary rail, and welded -6AN and -8AN fittings to a couple of 95' fuel rails. The -6AN ports go on the fpr/filter side and the -8AN ports are used to tie the two rails together in seris.

Here's a shot of the -6AN lines on the passenger side and one of the -8AN rail tie on the drivers side.

I've got a fuel pressure gauge mounted directly on the fpr and I have an electric gauge installed in my gauge bezel. The pressure sender unit is installed right after the secondary rail(or right before the fpr). It's the gold thing in this picture.

Of course when I first started testing it I had a couple of leaks here and there. I had to epoxy the primary rail a couple of times. A couple of the compression fittings needed tightening. While I was wating for the epoxy on the rail to dry I decided to install a couple of switches. I had already rewired the pump when I installed it and my relay is behind the interior panel next to the pump....so thats where I installed the switches. Right behind the passenger's seat. I can reach them from the drivers seat. I like the location cause they're out of the way. The green one is the main Power switch - it enables/disables the pump. I wanted this for parking at bars, concerts, and whatnot. Cant steal the car without fuel pressure. The blue one is a Test switch - it turns on the pump. Even with no key in the ignition. Great for leak testing, changing fuel pressure, etc.

Other than that, the EIC is installed and running. I'm using the same 034 EFI unit that Corbin has in his writeup. It doesn't really do anything right now because I don't have a turbo yet. But at least it's installed. Right next to the ECU - in the same bracket.

I've got 30 lb'rs in the secondary rail. That brings the total flow to 550cc which should be good for ~350-400hp. Amazingly enough these secondary injectors are the bottleneck on the system right now. Not that I'm getting 400hp N/A...but
1)the lines, fpr, and filter are big enough to flow ~1000hp.
2)the 255lph high pressure in-tank pump can flow enough to support 48 lb'rs in the secondary rail, which would bring the total flow up to 740 cc/min - good for ~500-550hp
Then the question comes up - Isn't this a little overkill Jim? Well, I wanted to build it so that I didn't have to worry about running the secondary rail dry. Think about it - the injectors are sucking from the top of the upsidedown rail - where the air is. Read that SteveTech link I mentioned ^^^ for more info on how inadequite our delivery system is. I guess the other thing is that I want to have a seriously big turbo at some point. Like, I've been thinking 20g for a while, but lately I've been thinking FP3065. Who knows what I'll be thinking when I actually get it. I'll settle for starting out with this 14b that I have for now.

Anyways. Like I said its running good. I had the pressure set a little low at first - 45 psig static pressure. The LTFT was hanging around 20-22 on my test drive so I raised the static pressure to 52 psig. Now the LTFT stays under 15. One other thing I noticed was that my idle is extremely stable now. Before it would vary from 700-800rpm when flipping between rich/lean cycles. Now it sits at 800rpm steady - no fluctuation at all. I'm happy with it. Now I can move on to the turbo.

Great job man! I'm in the same boat now too, starting to design my 8 inj setup. I'm going at it a bit different, with a more "user friendly" placement of the new rail and second set of injectors. Should be fun. Now get that turbo on! :)

Greta job, Jim!

Ya gotta love the 8-injector setup. It runs reliably, strong, and you get great gas mileage too! I know you'll be pleased once you get all the tuning down.

Wondeful clean work, man. :thumbsup

That looks like a solid fuel setup. I've had the Stevetek fuel system on my "to do" list for a while, and having seen how nice yours turn out, I might have to gather the parts soon:thumbsup

Hey guys...I no I sound like a n00b, well I guess I am.
I have herd much about this 8 injector setup. Im just wondering why people do it...I have read and not sure, but I think its one of these 2 reasons.
Is it for one your daily driving you want to keep a low injection of fuel, and when you want to race you switch over to the higher injection.
Or do you combine injection to make one huge amount of fuel going in…but then why don’t you just put in 650’s and save your self all the trouble?

As you can see im confused, please don’t bash me…lol im stupid.. so what

Thanks guys.

Well the installed system cost a bit - just over $1100. Here's a link to the part breakdown and prices http://www.dimensia.com:81/jimbo/netfiles/FuelSystem.htm It was a little over $500 for all of the fuel delivery parts like lines, hoses, fittings, fpr, and filter. Then it was $600 more for the other components like pump, spare rails, spare manifold, EIC, injectors, etc. I did all the fabrication and installation so it only cost me in parts. I definately spent more that $1100 when putting it together. Some of those fittings are expensive and I've changed my plan several times along the way. Which reminds me, that link to the FuelSystem part no's and prices is the final list. I know I've shared that with several people on AIM before, and it changed here and there along the way. Some of the big changes from what I've already given out were that I got rid of the drain, changed the rail tie to use hose, and changed the return fitting to be the -6AN bulkhead. But that link shows the final list.

As far as how that picture got on Gottude - I IM'd some of these pictures to Bill along the way. I've been slowly installing parts for this system now since July. I show my AIM buddies what I'm doing when I'm online - which hasn't been often lately(sorry). But I didn't think it was a good to start threads about it here till I was done. Like I said, quite a few things have changed from the original design.

NOOBIE GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!!!!

J/K :P

Here's my understanding... Hopefully its right...
8 injector set up.. It mimic the stock fuel idle or when not in boost (smaller primary injectors fire–where the stock injectors would be); while getting enough fuel when your running a lot of boost/power (the secondary, mounted by drilling through the intake manifold, I THINK). The secondaries fire as boost increase.

Since we can't use 660cc injector for our primary stockers, we can use the 8 injector setup to have enough fuel, while idling like stock.

Hope I helped...

Only boosted motors need to use the 8 injector setup. We plumb in 4 extra injectors into the intake manifold, and they fire ONLY when we go into boost. We then can retain the use of the stock injectors,in the stock location, to run the motor normally, out of boost. The extra 4 injectors are controlled by the 034 EIC, which is a dedicated extra injector controller. We wire up the 4 injects to this special computer, and then we can fine tune the boosted fuel map with a laptop computer. You now have full control and tunability of the boosted fuel Air/Fuel ratio. Its a MUCH better way to go over using a rising rate fuel pressure regualtor, since you can fine tune with the 034 EIC. Hope this clears up your question.

nice job man
but
did you drill the holes with a countersink :)

Good eye. Yeah. I explained why a bit better in a thread I posted about finishing the manifold - http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=8&topic_id=49086

...but like I said, I've changed ISPs and the pictures unfortunately don't show up on that thread anymore. Basically, I used the countersink because I don't have a drill press big enough and I didn't want to get one that was big enought. ok ok, I wanted to get one but my wife would have killed me if I got the one I wanted. I'll post the missing pictures and a brief description here so you might have a better idea about what I was sayin in that old thread.

Here's a side shot. I spent a while setting it up so the angle would be just right.

I'm lining up to drill a runner right here. Notice the marks on the board, and the "dowel" bits I referred to in the other thread.

This one shows the top platform off so I could drill the pilot hole. Notice that I already started the cut with the countersink bit while the rig was assembled. It would go far enough in so that I knew where the hole would be centered, but it just wouldn't go in all the way without drilling a pilot hole.

This one is a closeup of the pilot hole that I had to drill.

The countersink would go all the way through after getting the pilot drilled.

Get all the bosses in there and stick the rail on it....

...and glue em in.

Jim you'd be better off w/ a 20g buddy. A fp3065 is such a serious overkill its not funny. We will be building a 1st gen awd here soon w/ this turbo and you wouldn't believe how big it is. You'd need 550's in the secondaries to keep this thing happy. We have a guy on my board with a 3055 maxing out 660's at 19-20psi. That turbo has a 4" inlet! Its just sick. Probs on the setup. I used alot of expensive parts w/ my 8 inj setup as well, i just need to do the braided lines and i'll be quite satisfied. It looks pretty clean!

Yeah, I was told to use teflon paste on fuel lines, rather than tape. Although I wouldn't think tape would leak any more than paste...

Its not really an AN fitting. The hose end is a 6AN, but the thread on the tank cap is a straignt thread hose fitting with the same thread as 6AN, 9/16-18. Generally you don't have to use tape on JIC connections, but I did because the male end isn't a JIC - its something else. I wrapped the teflon on nice and thick, tightened it up snug. 800 miles so far and it hasn't leaked.
