104757, EGT gauge gone mad!! Help.... Posted by Cyexmaster, Nov-28-08 06:59 PM
Well first of all HI, been a while, had my car stoped for 4 months cuz tranny took a dump, got it fixed! woo hoo! And got my first kill a few days later! Mazda Speed6, smoked it really bad.. Anyways this week I went to the track, the car wont and I repeat WON"T grip, just real bad tire spin I tried everything but I guess it's the tires I got some cheap tires so I can't expect much. But thing is when I do get grip at 2nd at like 5k it's all good till the EGT reaches 14k and then it goes crazy! jumps to 24k and then back to zero. I got off the gas and it just goes back to normal around 12k.... Wierd! I asked a friend and he told me it could be that it isn't well grounded.. what do you guys think?

Sounds to me like you have a bad sensor/probe. If it worked fine before then clean up your positive and neg conns to the gauge and consider replacing the probe. TRE makes a nice one thats only 45.00 last i checked. The probes dont usually last that long to be honest with you.

Check the ground for sure. If all wiring is good, replace sensor. Probably ground.

I had an issue with a bouncing needle ALL the time, it would never stay steady, and that was due to a bad ground. I grounded it right to the battery post and it was fine since. But since yours doesnt always bounce around, could be the probe like ^^^^ said, or a simple ground as well.
Glad to see your back up and running though and already back out to the track!

I thought the exact same thing when I read it... Maybe there's a currency exchange or something...
on a more serious note: I also have to agree, first check the ground, then the sensor. If you have it grounded to the body under the dash somewhere you might have a ground loop problem also so try directly to the battery first, then spend your money.
