Thanks guys.
It may look plain, well, because it is. I just wanted a long runner, header design manifold.
Nothing crazy here, just something that will flow nicely.

looks a lil like corbins design from what i see now, but I like the long runner design. very nice

Lookin good mike! While your fabbing things up think about a heat sheild around your power stearing pump or you'll end up like I did... apparently the fluid likes to boil when the runners are that close and next thing you know your ripping the whole damn system out cuz the pump is fried...
Oh, and I threw on of these on my starter also:
http://www.jegs.com/p/Thermo+Tec/744857/10002/-1
I had some heat soak issues at first with that also. It sucks when you run to the gas station for a soda then get stuck there for 20 min with your hood open and fans on cuz everything under the hood is slowly being broiled... Of course anyone on here that has built their own turbo mani will probably agree with me when I say that chrysler put the starter in a "wonderful" spot...

Yeah i did the same thing and wrapped the starter....I saw that one comming..lol
Looks like a good start. Becareful, your not leaving yourself many options for downpipe routing.

Exactly right Terry. That is why I ripped it all back apart and ground off all my tack welds, lol. Starting with something new tomorrow. There was no way I was fitting my 3" dp in there, lol.

104518, RE: Another manifold in the making. Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Oct-20-08 04:14 PM
my take.....leave 3-4 the way they are. take 1-2 under 3-4 above the starter and tight 90 them down to where you plan on merging them. do it creatively and they will still be equal length.

Here is the latest, a little different now. As long as the hood will shut with the turbo mounted, this is what I am going with. I will bring the turbo home from work tomorrow and see what happens.

|
104524, RE: New design w/ pics Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Oct-21-08 04:02 PM
That wont fit...... you need to get the flange 5" lower or do a custom hood. Not equal length either which i can see wasnt your goal anyway.
Now you see why mine is so twisted to get the runners all 16"

104525, RE: New design w/ pics Posted by teklein, Oct-21-08 04:25 PM
I like it!
Agree with Terry though, dont think its gonna fit :(

Oh I got it, here it is now. Worked out pretty well. All I need to do now is pick up a 2" 90* elbow and tack that to the collector, and then the t3 flange on top of the elbow and I have my top mount turbo like I originally wanted...here are some pics of how it sits now...

Looks awesome man!
Glad you got it all worked out!

104537, RE: New design w/ pics Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Oct-26-08 04:04 PM
I think with you merging all 4 into 1, you really should consider making the runners equal length, but you know more than I.

Got my 2" elbow today from UPS and finished the manifold. Checked hood clearance and I have a good 3 inches. I will be sending the manifold to Mark this weekend to get TIG'd :)

Looking down through the hood -

Turbo sitting on the manifold, turbo is not bolted down and obviously not how the compressor will be angled...

104573, RE: All tacked up and done. Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Oct-30-08 08:47 AM
Not bad design.
You need to spend more time getting those cuts to line up properly. You are making the welding even more of a pain in the ass with poor fitment. Gap filling is not really an option with a TIG. The fitment makes you look like a hack.

Everything lines up pretty good actually, there are a few small gaps around the collector that just need bent back, when I put the turbo on there, a couple of pipes bent downward...
On my first manifold I ever made 2 years ago that Mark welded, I had a couple large gaps, like 1/4" im talking about here, and Mark welded it fine...I dont know much about Tig welding, but Mark did a great job on that other manifold as I am sure he will do awesome on this one.
|
104575, RE: All tacked up and done. Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Oct-30-08 09:13 AM
Judging by that picture you have a couple big gaps, dont piss on my back and tell me its raining. I am not saying filling the voids cant be done but your making a ton of work on the welder because your being lazy.

Yeah, its going to go right over top of the manifold and 90 downward. It will be ceramic coated to keep some of the heat down.
Terry, yes I do have a couple of small gaps, but with them being pretty small, I dont see it being hard on Mark at all.

I forgot Mike, my mistake. You know a lot more about welding and crafsman ship than any of us. Its all easy to do, we are just idiots for thinking it tkaes more time and finesse.
Maybe you should learn to TIG or weld for that matter before you tell me whats "just as easy."

When I had AMM come over and quote me on welding the new core support onto the front of my Galant, he took one look at the gaps I had (which were all less than 1/8") and he told me there was no way he would tig those joints like that. AMM, as anyone here who's seen his work will tell you, is a fucking artist when it comes to tig. We ended up plating over these imperfections on the Galant. In some places, the plates were slipped behind one piece and over the other to provide a flush surface with no gaps to be tigged. He actually forgot the welding rod and we used three wire coat hangers I had in the house to finally weld it all together.
Gaps = :nono
EDIT: Link to pictures of AMM prepping and welding on 195. He wasn't happy with the quality of this project, but Captain Halfass told him it would be just fine for a spray painted car that will ultimately end up airborne in the desert before getting stuffed in a ditch.

Brian I disagree...
At work I fill HUGE ass sections in like a fucking sculptur with TIG. It's all weld builds and sometimes its fucking nuts the gaps and holes you fill.
If you have a copper backup pad with gas coming through and allow for interpass grinding and COOLING then you can fill anything if you have the skill. Anyone that says you cant fill a gap or a hole with TIG needs to just see some of the shit we work on at Precision...it's actually about 90% hole and gap filling, or WTC (weld to contours).
I mean ive welded back in BIG sections where sections of flange surfaces were cut out and big holes that have been ground out due to casting inperfections. Weld bead after weld bead, believe me gaps can be filled. Ive worked on a single repair for 3 days to a week of TIG welding with .093 INCO 718 wire....and it's xrayed and it has to be flawless. Accounting for microshrink, etc is very hard but like I said, hole fills and gaps are done every single day with TIG on parts way crazier than cars. Ive seen 10 lb weld builds cut out before too because something got fucked up.
edit: It OBVIOUSLY makes sense to try and fit it up as close as possible for EASE of welding but thats not to say holes cant be filled with TIG because thats not true at all. If you feel like paying me a shit load to fill your mad fab skills then ill show you how its done aerospace repair style.

We are not saying it cant be done Josh, we are saying its not right to do it just because your lazy and it is making more work for the welder. what we are trying to say is that its wrong to make more work for the welding process than it is for a simple proper fit.

yea totally agree and in this case it is laziness which is no excuse. The welding would be a pain, but it can be done. Mad FaB skillz y0!

I am not trying to make a hard job on anyone and for sure I am not lazy at all.
|
104592, RE: All tacked up and done. Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Nov-01-08 09:45 AM
I just went back and read it, all you stated was the pipes you bend from sizing up the turbo would be bent back. There are gaps that were there long before you got the 2" elbow.
|
104625, RE: All tacked up and done. Posted by quicksilver99, Nov-07-08 04:50 PM
Ok, me being the welder I'm going to settle this....
Yes there are gaps, noted. But comming from someone who as far as I know has no experience in the feild of pipe fitting I think he did a pretty damn good job. I did his last manifold and there where gaps also, but when I welded it I made the necessary corrections. I will build a heavy duty jig, mostly made of 3/8" plate or thicker, that will hold and locate the flange locations as well as give support for the runners and keep them in the necessary locations. Then I break each runner free, weld off the collector, weld each runner, stress relieve it in an oven, then refit them to the head and collector. when it's all said and done there will no longer be any gaps, and the welds will be nice and purdy like they should be. A little more work? Not really, It's no different than when I build a "ram-horn" or a "top-mount" manifold for a B-series honda for somebody thats located in southern florida when I'm sitting on my ass drinkin a beer at my welding bench in mid-eastern wisconsin. Mike can't tig weld yet, but I'm sure he will be someday. If not then oh well. All of us here that have built our own manifolds know that fitment is the hardest part of the whole process, but we need to remember that everybody has to start somewhere. You never remember anything better than a big mistake. And the only way to get it right is to practice practice practice. Besides, its only a turbo manifold. If it was a 17,000 psi hydraulic line like the one I just patched up this morning then it would be a different story. But at least he's only in ohio, It's not like Vancouver B.C. where they take 3 days to x-ray your shit and send it back and I need to find something to do for the next two...
edit: I know most of you are probably messin wit mike and I'm expectin someone to give me shit about what I said. But when it comes to welding and fabrication I don't care to joke around- so this was mostly for future readers that someday dig this post out of the depths by way of the search button...

I'm listening.....
And terry, I understand what your saying. I don't know mike personally, but Have had many discussions with him on many subjects. Your point is considered, if it is a matter of laziness then all is deserved. If not then then it's like I said above. I don't know for sure, I just felt I had to say what I did because I don't want future fabricators to be detered from presenting their work on here in fear of a little critisism. I was once in the learning stages as everyone else has been. What you thought was great will some day look like crap to yourself and you'll laugh at yourself for thinking it. It's part of learning. I agree that there's no excuse for laziness. None what so ever. But like I said above, sometimes learning is learning... I'm not about to make a call on the subject myself, on that I will remain nutrual. I, like you, only wish to help.

Mark, you seem to miss all of my points, everyone.
you have confirmed there are gaps when mike claims there are none. The gaps were large enough for you to feel obligated to correct them prior to welding. The gaps are there because Mike is in a hurry and lazy. Its not the tools, its not the experience, its lazy. Last i checked, a hack is someone who half asses a job for someone else to correct.
Had the gaps have been irrelevant, you would have just welded them with no thought.
Its no much the fact that Mike did this, its the fact he argued the fitment is find normal and there were only tiny gaps. Had he have just claimed he had a hrad time with it and couldnt seem to get it to fit right then the discussion would have ended before it started.
This is the very reason i wont let Mike paint my bike!

Banned or not, Its still a bet, and you will be waxing sir.
Also, I only like Dove's, 3M or Meguires products used on my car, and hand buffing only please.

I have the perfect hand pad for buffing............you will supllying whatever manu you want, that is, if I wax it.
Its win win for me, i get to go skydiving in Ohio after 4 measly hours.
if i find out you had the shop alter the dyno setting to quarentee 400, i will not only wax the topside of your car but i will flip it over and wax the bottom.

Mark is a real saint for taking on the finish work on the manifold. You are encountering most of the same fitment issues that I dealt with. The engine bay gets really small when you start building a manifold like that. Where will the wastegate tie in to the manifold and will its dump tube tie in with the downpipe? Make sure you put a flange in the downpipe where it turns down next to the manifold. I skipped that on the first go-round and it was a major pain to install/remove the downpipe. Adding that flange was a huge help. If you tie the dump tube into the downpipe, a section of stainless "flexible exhaust pipe" can be used to make an expansion joint in the dump tube.

Adding that flange was a huge help. If you tie the dump tube into the downpipe, a section of stainless "flexible exhaust pipe" can be used to make an expansion joint in the dump tube. Yeah the wastegate is dumped right back into downpipe...
I should have installed pics within the next week of everything!
