104202, Another Turbo NEWB Question!! Posted by LegacyCore, Sep-01-08 10:28 PM
OK, how to start this off. I guess just like any other person out there with a NA car. They want to turbo it as do I so it starts with research. Because honestly I don't know a lot about properly tuning a NA car. And the 420a was not on my list of cars to boost, but after doing some research found out the 420a is a very capable engine at producing good numbers under boost. So here I am on this site doing my research for a good deal of time. And the first thing I would like to say is, with how old this site is getting and all the posts it is accumulating there is a lot to go through when using the search button to find what you want. So I did my best and still have a few questions. But before I get to my question I guess I will list off the parts I would like to use to refresh my tired ole' 420a before applying the ole' metal snail.
Clevite 77 P-Series Rod Bearings Clevite 77 P-Series Main Bearings Eagle Connecting Rod 3/8 Bolt Set Hastings .20 Bore Over Ring Set JE 8.6:1 .20 Bore Over Forged Pistons ARP Main Stud Kit ARP Head Stud Kit Timing Belt Water Pump Melling High Volume Oil Pump Fel-Pro Head Gasket Fel-Pro Lower Gasket Set Howell Automotive Underdrive Pulley Walbro 255 Fuel Pump
That is my list so far, and it comes to about $2101.18 on my engine build before S&H on all parts. I do not have any head work listed because I read the weak part of the 420a when boosting is the block not the head. The turbo kit I plan on going with is the Treadstone Performance kit. I have read on DSMTuners.com that a lot of people have had good luck with this kit. And of course I like the price compared to Hahn Racecraft Stage II kits. My goal is to put down at least 300HP. If head work will be needed to reach those numbers, then it will be back to researching the needed parts and modifications. But for now I'm going to hope I wont need to mess with the head even though I know it would help out greatly in letting the engine breath better while under boost. Anyways I guess I will ask my questions now. With my goal of 300hp and the bottom end build I have listed above what size/type of injectors should I go for, 500cc is my guess. Also what fuel management should I use, I have read that MS is good but I don't want to rewire the entire car. Also if there is anything I'm missing in my list up there please throw in your ideas and opinions. And if head work is needed or a really good idea please say so. Thanks for reading my long winded post, and thanks for future help.

OK, did a bit more research on fuel/engine management and I guess in the next few months MSnS PnP will be released for all 420a equipped cars. This is exciting because this would be perfect for my future turbo build. BUT, yes there is a BUT. I read that MSnS PnP will not support automatic transmissions... Anybody that reads this thread know if this is the truth or not? I started a thread on MS's forum in hopes to get an answer there. I guess I will see what info I get, and possibly inform those on here with automatic transmissions. Thanks.

Paul (symtech labs) posts on this board so he should be able to give you the straight answer on that one. You can also look into the hahn portfueler or a custom 8-injector setup, but it seems everyone is abandoning them and heading towards MS instead

Thanks, I'll wait for his or somebody else input on the matter.

MSnS is the way to go hands down.
Although, PortFueler is nice too I hear, but I have personally never used it.

Work has been pretty slow this morning so I have been able to sit in my office and read. I think I'm going to go with MSnS over PF because I don't like the idea of having to tune my car with the weather changes with PF. Since it does not have a temp sensor and what not. If my car was not going to be a daily driver I would go with PF for its simplicity over MSnS. And since MSnS PnP will not work with the auto transmissions I'm stuck doing all the wiring with MSnS, I hope it is not to hard to do.
Also I'm still at a loss as to which injectors I should be using, is it bad to go to high? I'm still thinking between 450cc-550cc??

This will give you an idea of the install for MSnS. Really not that scary. http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=MSnS%20INSTALL%20(parts/wiring%20only!)
As for injectors, no problem going on the high side. MSnS can adjust out the injectors.

Thanks a lot! All of you guys are so helpful I'm very grateful for all the help.
Erm.. Your link does not work for me. It says that there is no content for the page?

OK I have made the decision to start off slow with my turbo build. I'm going to piece my own kit together and keep it between 5-8psi. This seems to be the safest way to keep things for a daily driver. Here is a list of what I plan to do:
Walbro 255lph hp fuel pump Vortec 12:1 FMU Fuel Cutoff Defender Stock Injectors
This should keep everything running pretty well on a stage II custom kit running between 5-8psi. Then later down the line when I either blow my engine or get a second daily driver I will tear the engine down and rebuild it from the floor up for 300hp. Am I leaving anything out for fuel upgrades to safely run 5-8psi?

Not really, you can safely run 8PSI on that set up. I did, many other members have too. Just be mindful of your fuel pressures, because they are going to be through the roof at 8PSI.

So them maybe get a FPR? Or will that cause issues with the FMU?

Ok,it sounds like you've got your shit together, but something to think about, I recommend you go for the SFMU vs the 12:1 FMU. Reason 1 - The 12:1 is going to supply WAY too much fuel pressure. Reason 2 - The SFMU gives you a bit more tunability. On stock injectors, you want to look for around a 7:1 or 8:1 rise in fuel rate. That along with a Walbro 255 will have you set for fuel on 8psi. Also, have you thought about what size turbo your going to use?

Thanks for the info, but my plans are to go with a T3 Turbo.

I really hate not being able to make up my mind. But I think I might have to go with my original plan of rebuilding "A" engine. I took some things into consideration. My current engine has almost 140k miles on it, and is losing about half a quart of oil every 1k miles. I have no clue where it is going. But it is losing it so I don't think I want to boost an engine with that many miles and losing oil. SO I'm either going to find another 420a, tear it down and build it back up with all new shiny forged parts. Or wait until I get a second daily driver and pull my current engine for rebuild. I think it would be easier to buy a second engine and rebuild it so I can take my time with it and do it right the first time. For it will be my first engine tear down and rebuild..

Would it be OK to upgrade my fuel system and run around like that until I do get my turbo swap? Or just buy the parts and put everything on at once.

yeah you'll be ok just will need to adjust your a/f ratio correctily.
