104141, downpipe... Posted by Smokey719, Aug-25-08 07:43 PM
So im new here i know i bought a 95 eagle talon esi a while back and even tho i dont currently have the money for it im begining to plan the turbo build for it i got pretty much everything covered but im confused on the downpipe majority will probably tell me to search and i have over and over again which is why i was able to figure as much out as i did is because of the umpteen topics on every other aspect of turboing the 420 but i cant seem to figure out how i would go about connecting the turbo to exhaus so if someone could please help me it would be greatly appreciated thanks

First off welcome and thank you for searching :cheers
Now, I'm not quite sure what you're question is, but either you're going to have to find a downpipe for sale that will fit whatever you decide to go with for your turbo mani setup (pick up a turbo and manifold off of a used hahn kit you can go directly to hahn for the downpipe, pick up a star/treadstone manifold and any t3/t4 with the 5 bolt style flange then you can try to find a used star downpipe for sale)
Or I just found this searching there website, treadstone has a downpipe that they are now selling, however you will still need to have it welded to the rest of your exhaust, but you can at least bolt everything on and then drive it to a shop to weld it up for you.
Seen here:
http://www.treadstoneperformance.com/product.phtml?p=310&cat_key=148&prodname=420a+304+Stainless+Steel+Downpipe+and+Dump+Tube
This does take out the need to bolt everything else onto the car and then tow the car to a place that can weld you up a downpipe (you can't drive without it with the way the turbo faces, all that heat going right towards your cooling system isn't a good idea).
Personally if I were to do it again, I'd pick up a brand new turbo, and get a manifold from treadstone (unless you can find a used one here or on ebay) and I'd also get their downpipe, it looks nice and shiny :D Then build the rest of my kit around those parts: Ebay IC and piping, walbro fuel pump, FCD from one of the guys on here, tial wastegate from extremepsi, etc.

ok well thank you that was extremely helpful so this is kinda one more stupid question but on the wastegate is the amount of psi a spring can hold have to be the same as the amount of psi your running?....this is something else that has me slightly confused

No, however you cannot run lower than the psi the spring is rated at. For example if you were to have a wastegate with a 5 psi spring, without adding a boost controller, you're going to be running 5psi. If you want to up the boost, then you can either get a different spring for the wastegate or get a boost controller (One of the advantages to an external wastegate, it's so easy to change out the spring for another although they aren't cheap) What a boost controller does is it prevents the wastegate from seeing boost until a set psi.
Keeping with the same example, if you have a 5 psi spring in your wastegate, but have a mbc and want to run 8psi, when it's adjusted properly to run 8 psi, the MBC is basically a valve that won't open until 8psi. Upon opening the air goes past the boost controller and to the wastegate which will open up the wastegate and hold the boost at 8psi instead of 5psi.
This example is simplified to exclude pressure losses. In actuality, if you're running an IC and have the boost source for your wastegate sourced off of your turbo (as is the most common and often easiest way) Then when the turbo produces 5psi your wastegate will open, however, by the time that air travels through your intercooler and piping and gets to your motor it's usually 1-2 psi lower so your boost gauge may only read 3-4psi. People often alleviate this drop with a boost controller or if they want to run 5 psi they get a 7 psi spring, etc.

BTW, we only say that when it's clear the person hasn't searched and has one of the vaguest questions or a question that can usually be answered by just reading the stickys. We're very helpful when a person has a specific question especially if it's regarding something they don't understand, we were all there at one point. It's the questions like 'what do I need to turbo my 420a' or 'can I swap a 4g63' etc. that make the likes of DJ and others attack the OP
From your first two posts, you are an example of the type of member we want as a part of this community

as Corey said, if you're building around the Hahn/Star/Treadstone stuff the task is easier.
otherwise you into making your own. if you do that i HIGHLY recomend V-band as its a bit easier to work with if you need to remove components to work on the car. also, since it isnt a rigid welding there is some "wiggle-room" if you angle measurements werent quite right.
the build also depends on the turbo it self and what flange you need to build off of. also take into account whether or not you have an internal or external wastegate as you may need to add aditional piping to the DP.
flanges and premade things can be had all over from places like www.atpturbo.com and others. then it will rest upon the person you get to weld it up for you. again, unless your building aroung the hahn/star/treadstone stuff you will need to drop the car and all flanges piping etc at the welder so he can build it and test fit it all before you get it back

In case you were still considering the treadstone downpipe/dump tube,
![]()

Thats how they look on my car (sorry about the dust I havnt cleaned it yet). To get the dumptube on the car though I had to remove the passenger side fan. My local shop charged me a total of $100 to get the downpipe welded to the exhaust and the dumptube welded to the downpipe...so you might want to consider that when buying it. Other than that its a great little setup and it fits almost perfectly

So are you saying the downpipe doesn't fit with the fan installed, or you just had to pull it to install the downpipe and were then able to reinstall it? Also, I guess the dumptube doesn't reroute back into the downpipe from treadstone by the way I'm reading what you said? That piece does look nice though, sure makes me want to get rid of my rusted star dp

no fan will not fit with the downpipe in there, and the dumptube is just a straight tube straight down so you have to get a 90* welded in there if you want to have it routed into the downpipe

I find that interesting being that there's no issue with the star downpipe. Is the pipe angled a bit towards the front of the car as it goes down? Regardless, my money is on it's nothing some slimlines couldn't fix
Can you possibly take some more pictures and maybe put something in the wiki in the parts review section for future purchasers?

Sure...I already wrote to treadstone and they said they would look into the fitment issue but yes its angled a bit toward the front of the car and im sure slimlines will fix it once I can afford them :-)

so one more off topic question but any idea where i can get some 650 750cc injectors?

104163, RE: downpipe... Posted by 96TurboGS, Aug-27-08 10:32 AM
I dunno man I think you installed something wrong, for anyone reading this post the downpipe does work/fit very well. Your problem may lie somewhere between where you had your downpipe welded to your flex section. I left the dump tube open because it’s not like your going to be boosting all the time. And the heat doesn’t go back into the engine bay, it blows under the car, it just sounds a little loud but that’s part of having a turbo. Heres my pics, it lined up flawlessly to the 3” . People have problems because they install it incorrectly.

As for injectors that’s wayyyyy too big to be using without having a standalone like megasquirt. Depending on your turbo set up the common injectors to use are 300cc-440cc if your running a fmu or an sfmu. The best place to get them from is www.racetronix.com they got the good quality stuff for cheap.

weird...I couldnt get it to fit at all with the fan in...ill go try it again
nope still wont fit I dunno...its not that big of a deal for me though I dont mind having 1 fan until I can get some slim ones

Well that was the original plan....I want to do everythin at once turbo, brakes, suspension, built motor, standalone....Because if i do everything at once and go big the first time i dont have to worry about upgrading everything again saves money

Hell yeah. Tuning a msns isn’t going to come over night with 600cc’s+ as in a lot of reading and tuning will be needed witch I’m sure you know. Its one of the reasons why I went along with an sfmu and to this day I regret doing so because im limited to what injectors I can use and it was around the same price as msns. If your stock right now and you got the money I would go ahead and get the msns and make sure your car runs good with it (no leaks/smoke) then go about the star/treadstone manifold option with an exhaust. Having a wideband and EGT will make your life ALOT easier. Doing everything at once can/will turn into a nightmare if you don’t research every topic on what your doing till your retina bleeds. And if your going to be putting all this power down then get a clutch from southbend if haven’t already. Get ready to pay out your ass, the rewards are promising!!!!.

Well i figured as much but that's why I'm stating to plan everything out now so i have time to study up on all my parts and tuning. I like the idea of MS because its a complete stand alone and i can control every aspect of my car with it...as for the clutch I was thinking of going with a spec stage 3 with a spec aluminum flywheel I have heard both ways on the spec and was considering southbend but don't know where to find them

on their website. As far as I know you deal directly with them, not a distributor
