103953, Wastegate on downpipe Posted by eclipse982nrRST, Jul-13-08 04:02 PM
Hello friends.
I was curious to see everyone's opinion on mounting a 38mm wastegate directly onto the downpipe right after the flange on the turbine.
Do you think there is any disadvantage on doing this over mounting it coming off of the exhaust manifold? I am up to no good again as most of you know, and looking for a newer style mounting setup and notice that alot of people run a pipe coming off of the downpipe or right off of the flange and either dump back into the downpipe or atmosphere.
In my case, since I do run a 3" off of the turbo, I would have to drill out a spot close to the flange and come right off of the downpipe.
Thoughts and opinions welcome.
EDIT: A pic to kind of see what I am talking about. However like I said, it would come out of my downpipe instead of off the flange like pictured.

if you put it right on the down pipe, how is it possibly gonna control any boost? O.o
bad idea bro
turbo systems 101 man. the reason for the wastegate is to control the boost made by the compressor by controling the flow to the turbine. on the manifold the flow vents out of the wastegate and not through the turbine housing. the internal wastegates use a flapper on the turbine itself to control this flow.
if you put it on the downpipe, the turbo has already spooled and nothing post flange can stop the turbine, all you did was make a boost responsive exhaust pipe.
the pipes you see coming off the flangs are from internal gates and are venting the bypass exhaust to atmosphere or to the exhaust.
if you put it on the flange as in the pic it may work but i dont know how responsive it would be :shrug

It would be evacuating exhaust gas after the turbine therefore not controlling anything. You would end up with a boost activated mini cut out. The reason you see wastegates coming off of turbo flanges (like the pic you provided) is so they dont have to change their manifold to accommodate an external wastegate. In order for a wastegate to work It has to be able to control the amount of exhaust backpressure the turbo sees. If you mount the wastegate off the downpipe it will not be able to control boost. I hope I read your post correctly.... I apologize in advance if I misunderstood you!

Yea I know how a wastegate works guys, lol. I was curious to see everyones opinions on this though since I did not quite understand it myself and I notice that a couple of Supra guys run them like this too. Fuck it.

Mike stop looking at supra forums / pictures. Your car is making big power, but not supra power :D
So what was your reasoning behind thinking of putting the wastegate on the downpipe. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you knew how a wastegate worked, so have you figured out a reason some of the supra guys do it this way? The only thing I can think of is if they were using it as a boost controlled cutout instead of electronic or manual. I actually thought you meant having it dump into the downpipe instead of being an open dump.

I was just looking at pics on a Supra site and seen a couple of guys diong that. Whats my thinking behind it? I had no idea, that is why I asked. I have never seen anything like that before and did not understand how it would work, hense why I asked. lol.

I've seen similar setups not quite with a tube like i see pictured but mounting the wg directing on the turbine housing. Yes, an external and yes, it worked.

103974, RE: Wastegate on downpipe Posted by RoninEclipse2G, Jul-15-08 06:31 AM
It could work if the internal wastegate flap were removed and there was a divorce chamber block between the WG outlet and the turbine outlet but I think that would cause excess lag due to the exhaust flowing in places it shouldn't before reaching the turbine wheel.
your average ricer/tuner wouldn't know/think of putting the time and effort to making a perfect divorce block into the downpipe flange and therefore blow shit sky high.

why not just weld some stainless silverware to it while youre at it just for shits.
that picture shows some of THE WORST exhaust fabrication ive seen. granted, ive seen some horrid balls of shit but that is pretty custom. get er' done! :thumbsdown
turbosystems 101, wont work.

I don't see why it would NOT work. The port that feeds the wastegate is tapped before the turbine, where a stock flapper would be. He's just basically moving the flapper however far to his w/g position. It'd work just fine. He's not mounting it to the downpipe itself, that'd be just retarded. EDIT: wait, that is what he's wantin to do... Mike you're a retard. Do it like the pic and you're fine

slight problem, the inside of most turbos that have an internal wastegate flap that looks like this

once you remove that flapper, the turbo is never going to spool because everything goes right through the wastegate port to the exhaust downpipe.
that's why I said that you'd have to create a perfect divorce chamber block to seperate the two sections of the housing, otherwise it's retarded and useless.

yeah, i understand. Mine is one of the more rare flat style, with just a hole through that could use a seperated w/g tube, what i used as a reference.

justins71 is right, it works just fine.
Edit: here is a pick of a T3 housing that shows the port before the turbine.

I have alot of learning before I should play with turbos I will be honest I dont know much about how turbos work lol. I previously owned a SOHC Honduh Accord :thumbsdown that car was slow...

Divorce chamber? You can buy those. I forget the website. It might be atp turbo.
Some have it directly on the flange.
Look around.
