103760, Buying a turbo components - some questions
Posted by navyguns, Jun-06-08 08:28 PM
Yes, i have searched. Maybe not the entire site, (my internet underway is just rediculously slow)

SUPPORTING INFORMATION: 98 eclipse, five speed, new reman engine (oem grade). I want a smaller turbo obviously for stock internals, and no more than 8psi boost, full supporting fuel system, including megasquirt going in.

I have some questions regarding some supporting items i need for my turbo build.

1. what size vacuum lines do i need, and how much (replacing them all with ss braid)

2. what size/how much fuel line for return.

3. a 14b, and a small 16g are interchangable right? if so does anyone have a cheap, decent running 14b, or small 16g for sale? if so email me at longiel@ddg.navy.mil. I bought a custom mani and 14b and off a guy (came with a 14b in place, but he said it has slight shaftplay and i am worried it might not run well enough), and I want a smallish turbo for my setup as i am stock internals so I am happy with smaller, faster spooling.

-3a.Or, if anyone here is willing to offer a rebuilding/balancing service, I am interested.

4. Is anything wrong with the ebay catch cans? nothing against your setups, they are far superior to what i am doing, but a water bottle in my engine bay isnt what i am going for. If i can just buy a better looking catch can for cheap on ebay, id rather go that route.

5. I would love to be able to use a GS-T guage cluster as it has a boost gauge in it. Can i set this up with my turbo, or is it run by the ECU?

Thanks, as always, i appreciate your assistance. I am trying to beat the 1,000 turbo build, and so far am well ahead of the curve. just ironing out some details. I cant give too much specifics for my application as i am out to sea and my car is not :P

1. i used -4AN line for Vac, however i will warn you that if your making your own lines, -4 can get anoying to get just right especially when the ss jacket starts to fray a bit, or if you have big hands.

2. i usually recomend 23 feet of -6AN for SS'ing a fuel system, this will get you front to back supply and return lines with a safty cushin for "oopses" plus extra if you need to make lines in the engine bay itself

4. a catch can is a catch can :P they will all work just fine

Not gonna work, plus the stock boost "gauge" in the cluster is absolutely useless and from what I have heard is very much inaccurate. You need a REAL boost gauge

Take your ass to vato zone. Go to the ricer section. Refrain from looking at the tachs. You have one from the factory. Save your money. Get a boost gauge.

I paid $40 for a brand new faze boost gauge. Has everything you need. Granted if you want to run silicone 1/4" vac hose, you'll have to get the appropriate fittings, otherwise, everything you need is all there. I put one of the compression fittings on the guage like you're supposed to and used a rubber vaccum hose fitting (for 1/8" hardline) so i could use the 3 port fitting on the back of the intake manifold. 'T' off where applicable. I'll do a review on dsmtuners after i get the car running.

Know this: If you're running an (s)fmu, you'll need a T and vac hose. If you're running a blow off valve (some people dont) you'll need a T and hose for that. I think that covers it.

1. Don't waste money on ss-braided vac hose if you are on a budget, nothing wrong with regular old rubber hose.

2. What fuel setup are you going with? It depends.

3. Ditch both of those options and opt for a nice garrett t3-flanged turbo. Manifold for the 420a use a T3-style flange so getting a turbo with the same thing will be the best way to go about putting a kit together.

4. If you are looking for function, a water bottle can do what a regular catch can does for cheaper. I have made 3-4 "catch-cans" out of water/gatorade bottles and they work fine. Everyone who sees it gets a nice laugh out of it as well.

5. Get a real boost gauge like what was stated above. An Autometer is a nice brand to go with for the budget-minded buyers.

actually the gauge issue is answered, i fell into a straight up sweet ass deal on another eclipse. yeah, i have two of them now :P

i picked up a 95 4g63 swap off a guy with a profect b boost controller, greddy turbo timer, full gauges, greddy type r bov, and a brand new 16g turbo cf hood, cf front clip, wheels, body kit, turbo spoiler. the bottom end was just rebuilt, but the head is blown. how or to what degree, i dont know as i wont see it for another month or so.
i picked up the entire car for 750.

now i have to decide to i use the parts off the gst to boost my gs, or fix the gst and keep both.

do not go stainless for vac line, bad idea unless your going to run over 30psi. If you want to avoid rubber's tendancy to break down then run a mix of rubber and Alum 1/4 line.

If you want a quality vac line that wont collapse or break down prematurely look up Summit racing and MRgasket vacuum hose. they make a great quality kit that have an assortment of sizes and enough length to do your setup.

Alright i will look into that. Why not ss braid vacuum lines? I didnt want them so much for any performance, just wanting to eventually get the car to a nice clean good looking turbo install.

If you want looks then go for it but that same stainless gets dirty and can look like ass just as easy. They will offer no benfit to your setup. If its what you really like then go for it.

Alright heres an update.

finally back from deployment, be a few more days before i can get started with the repairs on the car, then the boost. should be a couple months til i am boosted.

heres a pretty complete list of components and what i paid for them:

95 GST for parts 750.00
I am getting the profec ebc, hks bov, aftermarket wheels with good tires, cf hood,cf front lip, turbo spoiler, boost, oil,nb o2,fmic and piping. (after i take off these parts, a friend is taking the car, and trading me his megasquirt, turbonetics t3/t4 turbo, and manifold.

ebay oil line kit - 100.00 (its a pretty good sized kit, didnt want to have to mess with the lines that much)

fuel pressure regulator kit - 105 (aeromotive knock off, all the guys reviews were good, i will definietely post up on this kit, because it looks REALLY good for the money)

wally 255lph fuel pump - 46.00 on ebay barely used.

fuel pump wiring kit - 30 on ebay

450cc dsm injectors of ebay - 77.00

95 fuel rail - 30.00 off a member on here.

hks air filter - 25.00 off another a guy

i actually bought for 30 dollars a fmic and bov off a probe i was going to use, however i am going with the fmic on the gs-t, so if anyone is interested, let me know, its actually an interesting design i thought.

extra oil pan for tapping - 10.00

fuel line i am going to buy at advance, going to wait on ss braid til later on.

I did get screwed by two people. one for an aeromotive fpr i was going to buy, i paid for it, never shipped, he wasnt on here, he was on a different eclipse/dsm forum site. I had found a custom made turbo manifold with a turbo for 200 shipped on ebay from a guy. He was pretty actually a pretty good guy. however i gave him a specific address to ship to, and his wife sent it to a confirmed address instead. Now that was my old apartment, and they actually signed for it. I really liked the manifold too, it held the turbo considerably lower than most manifolds. So it was lost. They refunded me my money, but a day later filed a claim on ME. i was a bit aggrivated, had to wait a month to get my paypal out of -200. i eventually won the claim, and moved on. I will definietely be dropping by that apartment to see if i can recover that manifold, i hate dishonest people with a passion.

Before i purchased the car and screwed up my budget build, i was going to be at around 800 dollars including shipping. It was worth it though, as 750 dollars for that car got me around 3 grand in parts.

Once i get this turbo set up, i will start my budget 420a build :) i dont want to get crazy with it, but i do want to see 300 or so at the wheel.

LOOK-------------
Parts i still need:
upper and lower injector seals
silicone couplers 2.5 inch 90 degrees and straight. I need these cheap if anyone has them to spare.
Or if you have a universal fmic piping set you can let go of super cheap i might be interested.
