10349, Turbo Kit Posted by CluckeRMC, Oct-03-01 06:13 AM
Ok, so by looking at the star kit for the last couple months I've started to realize that most of that stuff is obtainable quite easily piece by piece and fairly affordably. Because of this, I am thinking I will build my own kit. I have only a few questions that maybe some you turbo guys can answer.
1) Where do you go to get mendrel bent pipe for use on the turbo/intercooler (what kind of shop)? 2) Will a 1g bov work or should I stick with the common 3000gt bov? 3) What kind of fuel pump is recommended (Any specific brands you can recommend?) 4) Will the downpipe off a GST work for what I am trying to do?
Let me know if you know any of these answers!
Thanks guys!

Nobody thinks about the oil return lines and shit like that. You need more than that.
Yeah baby Yeah...

>Ok, so by looking at the >star kit for the last >couple months I've started to >realize that most of that >stuff is obtainable quite easily >piece by piece and fairly >affordably.
True the basics are off the shelf parts and not too difficult to find. Turbo ($750),Wastegate($250),Regulator ($150),stainless oil line ($50+) and fuel pumps ($100+) are a dime a dozen (although I dont know about affordable. just the stuff above will run about $1300 new and a cast iron manifold will run you a minimum of $400 plus BOV and boost gauge and intercooler if you plan on having one). The oil tee might be a little tricky to find but everything else isn't too hard to aquire IF you know what to get. I still dont think it can be done with new parts of the same quality for cheaper than a kit. With used and/or lesser parts probably so.
>1) Where do you go >to get mendrel bent pipe >for use on the turbo/intercooler >(what kind of shop)?
RRE, Summit, Bakers Precision, XS Engineering, JC Witney ect ect. Dime a dozen. If your muffler shop is friendly they could do the whole thing for you. >2) Will a 1g bov >work or should I stick >with the common 3000gt bov?
No reason it wouldn't. Good enough for 11sec DSMs crushed.
>3) What kind of fuel >pump is recommended (Any specific >brands you can recommend?)
Dont ask me I have the insufficient one. My engine should be gone already running what I am :-). Vortech makes some affordable adequate inline pumps as do a dozen other companies. >4) Will the downpipe off >a GST work for what >I am trying to do?
Hell no if you buy a Garett turbo you'll need to buy a garrett turbine flange (RRE) and have a downpipe made using the flange. Ditto for mitsu turbo using mitsu flange (also at RRE). Same goes for oil lines, they are turbo specific but readily available.
If you add up the parts cost seperately for the Star kit including the little lines/parts there's not much to be saved but a lot of down time to be had. Think used parts.

Thanks guys.. And yes I know oil and fuel lines, fuel pump, and all kinds of crap is required for the turbo those were just the questions I had left that I wasnt sure about.. Ok, so final question would be then, In your opinions, would it be worth it to do it myself and go with used parts as well as some new (maybe freshly rebuilt or low mileage garret t3 turbo for 250.00 and use an intercooler off a starion or something) or just go with the star/hahn kit? In all honesty if I was going to buy a kit it would be a hahn, however if I was going to do it myself, I would probably go with the garrett turbo.. Let me know! Again, Thanks!

basicaly, what stan is tryin to say is....after all is said and done, you'll be spending just as much as you would for a full kit.
and making your own would be a continuous headache....
and even once you get everything together, all you're going to after that is replace everything peice by peice.
just do it once, and do it right, get a kit....

As long as you have unlimited downtime suite yourself. Turbos and intercoolers can be had cheap. The rest will probably have to be new. If you have notions of doing it yourself to save money why if I might ask would you get the hahn kit over the star? The bottom line is the only reason I got the Star (contrary to popular belief I truly believe you are getting more for less in terms of parts. A kit with cast iron manifold, Deltagate, garrett hybrid, mandrel bent 2.5" downpipe are unheard of for less than 2 grand. When it was on group buy when I got it you could get all that for $1760. Hell I didn't want a turbo and couldn't pass that up!

Hmm, allright, well, the only thing with Hahn is they have been around longer and it seems that some of the star guys are blowing motors. If I remember a month or two back we actually had a post discussing that. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The garrett turbos, if I had to pick, would probably be my choice, however I'm not sure I'm comfortable with star over hahn. I imagine price would have a major pull on me though, I want stage 2 either way I go. Right now they are listed at 2895, both hahn and star, which is just a ways out of my grasp, and the fiance would shit herself if I spent that much. So I've got a bit of a dilemna, I need turbo ASAP yet cant fork out 2895, and the credit card is maxed allready, or damn near it. Guess we will see what happens. Sounds like people are leaning towards the kit so thats probably the direction I'll head, but I'm gonna have to figure out how I can come up with the cash. Any ideas on that aspect? ;)
RxR_Eclipse - You know, i was gonna say something about that. You're car loox tight man! So You're selling your ride? How come? You gonna be parting with any of the mods or selling it that way? What are you getting when you sell it?
Oh, and thanks again for all your help guys.

Thats all logical. But hahn people have blown up equally as much (I could easily list a whole bunch on both sides). Its totally a misperception that Star people blow up more. Hahn is an actual company/shop that will likely be around for a while. The Star kit is more like buying the parts seperate on your own except they've put them together. The only thing I dont like about Hahn is the early unnecessary bashing of the Star kit and a little presumtious comparisons (like the Super16G is better, the internal wastegate is better, his downpipe with flex section, lol, is better).keep it real both ways. Hahn has better boost response and possibly better sized turbo by most peoples standard but mitsu vs garett quality I dont think so (call turbo outlets that sell and rebuild both and have no reason not to tell it like it is). Internal wastegate is more convienient and requires no work to remain emmisions legal but better un uh? There's enough to like about the Hahn kit to keep it real without fast talking the people into thinking one is wonderful and one is all wrong. As you can see I have yet to get over it (mostly because it implies I have junk every time I think about it and everytime somebody says some bs nonsense about what the star lacks I am feeling oblicated to correct it to defend it).

10362, RE: Turbo Kit Posted by RxR_Eclipse, Oct-04-01 01:12 PM
This is why I am selling my ride and getting a GST! The 4g63 has been proven! As well as the 420A but a GST can go faster for cheaper! soooo...................But if I didn't have to make car payments I would stick with the good old 420A.
