102865, IHI RHB5 Posted by jaimer, Feb-19-08 04:31 AM
So im buying a turbo kit off someone on this forum and Its a borg warner ihi. He said its off the thunderbird. Is it safe to boost 10 psi(with this small turbo) since thats what it's set at. My engine is stock with no built internals
anyone else using this turbo with a stock engine?
he said it was a RHF 6 0r 8 (forgot which one he said haha)but if its from a thuderbird
i still cant get any good info on this damn turbo

Well if im correct the ihi rhb5 is from the probes and such. Im not real sure if its the same turbo... However, you gotta think. Its coming from a car with about 140 hp and like 190lbs torque? (correct me if im wrong)
I think you would be better off going with the 14b if your looking for a semi-small turbo to run on stock internals.
To be honest i dont think the ihi turbo will do much good. It being so small and everything. Thats a pretty small snail.
But, you not being able to find some feedback might tell you one thing. You could always try it and then let us know how the feedback is :)
good luck.

the RHB5 (VJ11) was used on the mazda MX6 as well so you might try Racingmazda.com for specs and parts. from the look of the exhaust flange i cant tell if a std 5 bolt gasket would fit, it looks funky i think the part # for the gasket is 13-490B (from mazda) and the O2 housing is #13-515A if you want stock stuff to try and mod it to work on our cars
do you have a Serial # plate on the side, or on the compressor housing? that will help identify the proper compressor map to look at to see if you should use it on your car
will say" Turbo spec (blah blah) serial no. RHB5 (blah blah) Parts no. (blah blah)" then look here http://www.suzukituning.com/General/Turbo/TurboList.htm for pics and information

the larger rhb-52 were in the last version of the thunderbird turbo with atx like 1988-1989 very good turbo that could push 12 psi on the ford 2.3 engine it was smaller than the garrett t3 of the previous thunderbird however they don't cost much to rebuilt and are water and oil cooled
it is a good turbo for a custom built and way better than a 14b because of its shape, making it perfect for log manifold PLUS you could get a o2 housing from the same car and use it to built a nice downpipe
the ford probe also use a ihi rhb5 but it was a smaller unit
I know that a few of my turbo log manifold from years ago were used with tbird IHI turbo and they were producing good numbers on the 420a

You're better off buying something else.
Check out spooled motorsports. They include things like compressor maps, max power efficency, wastegate settings. You can buy used, new, rebuilt.... They carry everything from IHI to KKK to borg warner.
Great prices.

no not mine my flanges were better and that crack will crack again if you don't grind really deep in that soldering and redo it

I can't remember exactly what the model of the turbo on my '87 t-coupe was, but i do remember debating replacing my t3/t4 with it, to make it more street-spooling-friendly, but did some research and yeah it'll put 15-18 psi, it's electronically boost-controlled between 12 and 15 (depending on year, ECM, and gear), so you'd need an external WG, and it was only good to push around 200-220 hp. That's sittin like 8ish psi, which is about the top of stock internal that you can safetly run. there's 350hp stockers out there, but don't think it'll be that way with all stock 420's. all depends on your fuel/ignition mods, all that good junk you probably already know.

so anyone know the internal wasgate setting? is it 10 psi?????????
people say different things about it.

103497, RE: IHI RHB5 Posted by justins71, May-04-08 05:03 PM
lol, i'm a dumbass... double checked and mine's internal WG... for some reason i thought it wasn't! Anywho... 7psi is what this guy said http://www.mustangforums.com/m_4959528/tm.htm about halfway down: "the '88 turbocoupe uses ihi turbos that are pretty small. Even if you got two, they're a little small for the 5.0. You could use two turbos from an 86 or lower turbocoupe/svo/capri rs/xr4ti, but make sure you go with two of the same size turbos some came with .48 a/r exhaust housing T3's, the others came with .63 a/r T3's depending on the transmission. I would recommend the .48's for what you're wanting. You won't be able to run lower than 7psi with the stock wastegate spring, even with a boost controller, but boost won't come unless you are on it a little bit."
Although another guy said 9, so it'd say the best way is just to test the damn thing yourself. hook a regulator/gauge to a small air compressor and have at it.

Yeah So i was doing some searching and I found it its suppose to be at 10 psi
I also found this
http://www.denverspeed.com/wastegates.html
Wheres a good place to get a spring?
Also This is my turbo set up. Let me know if it will work
Ihi rhb52 turbo manifold downpipe vortech 12:1 FMU FCD 1st gen BOV evo 8 fmic with piping gst stock fuel pump ( someone told me this will work, is it true?) gauges
just need the all small misc items, couplers, oil lines..... also going to get a turbo timer
any recommendations? is a s-afc required for this setup?

alright did some more research and the GST pump isnt enough with the fmu 12:1
So I need to get a 255 or 255lph
the 190 wont cut it right?

103520, RE: IHI RHB5 Posted by jaimer, May-09-08 07:17 PM
I need some help.
So thats going to be my low boost set up and I have a FMU 12:1 setup
I read that my car might run too rich.
I heard 8:1 is better suited for our cars with stock injectors.
What does a re-calibration kit do? Does it make the 12:1 to 8:1? is it like a disk you replace? (sorry im new and cant find info)
http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/product_variation.php?pvk=187
they also sell a bleed valve that looses 2 pounds
so from 12:1-10:1
whats easier and whats better for my setup 10:1 or 8:1?
im going to run from 5-7 psi max on stock injectors for a bit till I have more cash to upgrade later
Please any suggestion is greatly appreciated
Thanks

12:1 is the correct rate for stock injectors, i ran that for like 2 years before goin bigger, and I never had a problem with rich/lean conditions at 8psi. Only issue I had was cracking the stock rubber fuel hoses (Pressure can get upwards 110psi).
