Hey, so i do appreciate all the post on here.. and also, seeing that i'm posting.. the reponses..

just curious, i have installed a turbo on my 95 talon, i'm running an external wastegate on it, and i was told that it was set to 7psi

now i haven't really had a chance to fully run my car *my other post*

but before i get this thing going.. if the wastegate is set to 7psi, does that mean that if there is a build up of 7 pounds in the exhaust section.. or does it read from the vaccuum line that runs to it that there is 7 psi in the intake?? and prevent overboosting? now i haven't done any internal work to the engine.. yet.. but i did upgrade the fuel.. and i dont want to over boost.. how much boost can stock internals handle?? i'm sure there is tons of posts.. i did the search.. i couldn't find anything similar..

so should i get a boost controller to prevent this?

If the wastegate is set to 7psi, that means that the wastegate stays closed until the 7psi is reached in the vaccuum source for the wastegate. Once that set psi is reached, the wastegate opens and allows exhaust gases to bypass the turbo preventing more boost from building

a boost controller doesn't control boost in the sense you're thinking. A boost controller can only raise your boost by preventing the wastegate from seeing boost until a certain pressure is reached in the boost controller.

Sweet! thanks! good to know! so can these motors handle that with stock internals you think?? or should i take it easy till i change everything on the inside?

8psi tops. 9-10psi with a good tune watching your afr and egt's.... If you like boosting all the time and are using a basic fuel delivery system, stick with 5-7psi. Our pistons give out from boost pretty quick, especially if you have a real high mileage engine. Do a compression test and all the usual stuff to make sure your motor can be boosted safely. Have you ever held a 420a piston and rod assembly in your hands? I feel like i'm going to break it just looking at it. Be careful and read up.

Have cash ready to rebuild your motor when it goes. Atleast $1200.


I like boost as much as the next guy. I dont like my daily driver on jackstands for weeks like the boost-happy next guy though....

It'll be a year since i've had my car this comming may and i still haven't turboed my car. Stuff keeps breaking and you have to fix that shit before you even think about going faster.

Ran 13-16psi for 2 years on a stock motor with a 16g.

Never easy on the car and at the time the car was also daily driven. Not saying anyone and everyone should be running 1 bar of boost on their stock motor, but a good condition motor with a decent tune will take it willing. Any type of detonation at that boost level will crack a ringland however.

I cracked a ringland on piston #3. Was believed to be due to heat fatigue however (likely from abusing the car at high boost for so long), not detonation. That was a long, long time ago.

Oh okay.. thanks, yeah i have a higher milage motor.. and well i am already looking at the junk yeards for a neon block.. and i'm going to start the rebuild.. i think i'll play it safe.. i'll stick to 5 pounds.. and then change it up after i swap motors..

cuz yeah, i dont like to be out of my car for very long..

it's just tricky to run 5, because i dont know for you guys or not, my lag when i start is hardly there if any at all, and the boost just climbs really fast!! i want more ;-) but again.. i dont like the whole two feet and a heart beat thing.. :-)


it's unreal though, k so off topic.. but i put a BOV from a volvo (laugh if ya want) lol but man... by far it sounds the sweetest ever.. if i go to the junk yard again to search for a block.. i'm going to grab as many as i can.. :-)
