what fuel system set up do you guys recommend i go with when i go turbo.Im leaning towards the 8 injector setup. so far from my research it seems to be the best most affordable and user friendly.what setup do you 420a turbo guys run?and how do you guys like your setup?<a href="" target="_blank"><img src="" border="0" alt="96 avenger"></a>

daily driven or race day only?

there is no real "one system" answer, most are tailored to the users requirements.
5 Psi daily driven? easy and cheap
400hp drag monster? complex and can get expensive.

well heres the deal.i plan on turboing my stock motor and running like 8 psi.then i have an extra 420a engine im going to do a complete build up on.then im going to swap them out and transfer my turbo set up,fuel setup,and all my bolt ons.then i plan on boosting as much as i can safely or as much as i can squeeze out of my turbo setup.so i wopuld like a fuel system that can support low boost now and high boost later.no sense in just going with an fmu and a wallbro fuel pump.when ill just have to upgrade later.i dont have money to wast like that.i have 4 kids to support to.

Why not just go with the FMU, Walbro, and stock injectors right now? You can find an FMU cheap ($50 or so) and you need a Walbro anyways. It will be easy to setup for now and then when you upgrade the engine, swap out fuel systems at the same time.

^x2 Depends on how you want to be able to drive it later, when you're high-boost. if it's track only, I'd just run like MS with some monster injectors. For a little more steetability use the staged setup with 8-injectors. If you want sort of all around, but a little more $$, look at the Hahn Portfueler. You'll still need MS or at least MSD-DIS to control spark when boosting over 7.

Quoted for being a valid point. You shouldn't need ignition control when boosting at 7 psi. Really shouldn't need it til you reach 15psi or so, but even then it can be done without I'm sure.

However, for what it sounds like you are going to setup, which is a general path that has been followed numerous times on this site, I'd suggest an MSnS for it's affordability, variety of features, and wealth of support in the 420A community.

i would love to go with mega squirt.but i keep getting guys on other forums telling me its not user friendly.and that i have to basically start from scratch and program my own fuel and spark curves.and i would be lucky to get the thing running.unless i know how to program it.and im not that advanced with electrical stuff and computers.

Megasquirt is complex, portfueler is easy.

It should change for all posts you've made, you don't have to re-post.

As stated, go with the fmu setup for now. You're gonna need the walbro pump no matter what your plans, and you can always sell the fmu later on when you upgrade.

I had a knock sensor log hooked up and it ran great, but at 5500 rpm at 8 psi it started knocking like mad. Turned boost down and nothing. That was with a step-colder plugs, 93 octane, intercooled, also. Ran with a scanner on the timing and it had a max on the retard when it sees knock. Trust me, I know. Much over 8 and you'll do some damage on stock timing if you run it consistently

This is a perfect example of individual motors having unique characteristics or “needs. Soooo many different variables play a role in an engine having knock and one motor having more and another having less. Things like age of the motor, altitude, temperature, octane, boost, plugs, compression, etc, etc, etc. (I know, I know you already know this).

I see zero knock at 18 psi on 91 octane, it only starts to rear its ugly head above that and even then I only need to pull 3-4 degrees. Running 104 octane I don’t see any knock until 24-25 psi. Again I only pull about 4 degrees out to alleviate the problem.

The point of having the ability to pull or tune timing is key though. It isn’t a must for lower levels of boost.

To answer your question about fuel systems I would have to say for ease of use and trouble free daily driving at higher levels of boost an 8 injector setup is nice. I use to run the Accel DFI gen 6 for years and I got it to work well enough but was always having to adjust something to get a smooth off boost drive. I then switched to the Gen 7 DFI and had the same issues of making constant minor adjustments but less than I was with the Gen 6 version do to the more advanced features of the Gen 7 box. Long story short I switched over to the HRCs 8 injector system and have had none of the issues that I was having with the standalone systems that it followed. Both systems have pros and cons its up to you to decide which is “for you and your application”

For me I LOVE the off boost drivability of the hrc system. Like stock because it is stock. And I am happy to date with the on boost fuel performance of the system. 20psi on 91 and 26 on 104.

what about the adjustable cam gears i have on my car now.cant i use them to retard timing when i go to higher boost?thats the main reason i bought them.there not much help while im still NA.but figured once im boosting they will come in handy with tuning.i do have the timing advanced some now to give me a little extra out of the engine.so far im thinking going with the 8 injector set up and using my cam gears to retard the timing as needed.or will i really need another means to adjust the timing and spark?

Cam timing and ignition timing are two different things. The adjustable cams gears are allowing you to open and close the valves at a different time (or degree) than what stock would allow you to. It’s completely different than that of ignition timing and control of your spark.

Not a waste of money though. They are worth having throughout your upgrade process.
