102395, Stock 9:6:1 pistons with Eagle rods? Posted by avengerowner23, Jan-06-08 03:32 PM
Do you guys think i could run stock pistons with some eagle rods and be safe?
Has our stock pistons ever gotten destroyed from boost, i always hear that our rods would, but ive never hear problems with pistons....
My whole plan would be to take some new stock pistons and get some eagle H-beam rods, and run 15 pounds of boost, maybe 18, but im scared that the pistons would give out....
What do you guys think?

The rods will handle more boost than the pistons will. Also, I don't beleive that stock pistons will fit with eagle rods. But, With the amount of boost you are wanting to run, new rods AND pistons will be a must anyway. I wouldn't expect to get away with more than 10 psi on stock pistons/rods.

If you're going to be taking it all apart, why would you not spend the little bit of extra money to do it right?

Well, it's just that i wanted so stay at 9:6:1, cause 8:8 are kinda sluggish....
but i mean i just wanted to know if the pistons could, or couldnt hold up..
if i did stick to 9:6, then i prolly wouldn't even need that much boost to get to 300 whp..

The money you spend on trying to run hi compression and boost without knocking is going to cost the same.
Just get a turbo that suits your needs and run 8.8:1. Do whatever you have to do to get it to spool faster. Maybe consider a wet nitrous kit if you want to run a bigger turbo. Get a progressive controller to cut the nitrous off when you're at full boost.
Sure, your car might be slow until you boost it but when you boost it, your mind will be at ease. Hell, you can even install the nitrous before you boost if you want to play from time to time. Never hurts to look around and see if you can get a used kit. Make friends at your local tracks/events and in the tuner community and you'll be impressed with what kind of deals you can make.
I was thinking how nice it would be if we could get vitara pistons and tuner toy rods for our cars. Those things are rediculously cost effective. Those are what i'm helping a friend put in his D16y7 EF2 civic sedan. I'm all about performance per dollar too but you really dont have room to skimp with our engines. Hold off a bit and look and see if you can find deals on used units if you're trying to pinch pennies.

i ran 10psi on my stock motor and ended up with a total of 7 cracks on 4 ringlands. yeah, it took a few months to do the damage but it still did it and i wasn't even close to 300whp. good luck dude!

I ran 17 psi on stock internals, due to a destroyed vac line controlling my ext. wastegate. A day later, my compression was all out of wack. If you ask me, your ringlands will crack far before you throw a rod.

I ran 10-12psi for almost two years and had no problems, with my stock block...may I got lucky

You can get a Compressino ration that is close to or the same as stock in a Forged piston. Theres no reason to not change the pistons unless you simply cannot afford the swap. At least use some stock SRT4 pistons if nothing else. The SRT4 pistons will work in the 420a Block.
