Are a BOV and wastegate same thing or are they different? If different which is better or what does each do. Also what is the difference between regular and ball bearing turbo. Does the ball bearing just spool up faster? If i were to get a NER stage 2 would i need new rods? Are the eagle rods from Howell any good? would i need new pistons? new injectors? anything else u can think of would help. If i missed anything please add it...im really considering a turbo real soon...just waitin for NER kit. TIA! sorry to be a bother. Also if i get a CAI will i still be able to use it or will i have to get rid of it?

Wow, you asked a lot of questions.
The difference between wastegate and the bov. The wastegate controls the amount of boost that you run. It allows exhaust gases to escape without going through the turbine of the turbo after a particular boost level has been reached (only works to a certain level then it needs to work in conjunction with a boost controller). It is mounted before the turbine housing (or inside in the case of an internal wastegate). A blow off valve helps to relieve pressure when the throttle plate closes (you letting off the gas) so that the built up pressure doesn't go back into the compressor housing. It opens up and relieves that pressure.
As for the ball bearing q's I know that it makes for faster spool up (less friction I think) and makes for a longer lasting turbo.
For any of the kits that are on the market you wouldn't need rods as long as you maintain a SAFE boost level.
The eagle rods from howell are very good.
You don't need forged internals unless you plan on getting a little crazy with the boost (just don't buy a boost controller if you want to keep it down).
You would only need bigger injectors if you wanted to turn up the boost so you could meet the fuel requirements for that level of boost.
The CAI goes out the window as well as headers when you go turbo.

No. if you keep the boost low, you won't need internals at all.

Depends on the amount of boost you want to run. What are your goals? Could be yes, could be no.

Heh you can still use the CAI with a little ingenuity (hope I spelled that right) :P . With my stage 1 piping I was still able to utilize the short part of my CAI. But if you getting a stage 2 don't bother because it comes with an intercooler, an intercooler would be more effective than a CAI. When I went stage 2 I just mounted my HKS filter onto my turbo inlet.

I once wondered why more turbo cars didn't have a CAI available to them as well. But think about it, the intake pulls in air, albeit cold or not, then that air is pulled into a compressor that spools it through blades at thousands upon thousands of rpm's, thereby cooking the heck out of the air. Sort of defeats all the trouble you went to before in cooling it down. (ex. put an ice cube in a microwave and see the results; put a glass of warm water in a microwave and see what happens....I'm sure the results will be similar in each case)
That's why it's best to concentrate your efforts(and your money) in a good intercooler.

In fact colder air would heat up faster than air that is already heated (for example putting hot water in the freezer vs cold water, the hot water would freeze faster, atleast thats what my chem profesor said). Would the air brought in by a CAI be cool enough to counteract this effect??? I dunno, I would need numbers, and I havent made it that far in chemistry yet

There is no way that hot water would freeze before the cold water. You might see a higher heat transfer rate from the hot water to the freezer (because of the high temperature differential), but the hot water will still take more time to freeze. How long it takes to change the temperature of an item to match its surroundings depends on the temperature differential, mass of each, and the heat transfer coefficient of each among other things. Increasing the mass of water or temperature of the water will increase the time it takes to match the temperature of the surroundings. Just trust me on it, I'd rather not look up the details in my old Heat and Mass Transfer text. For the CAI, if you decrease the temperature of the intake air, the outlet air will decrease too...but probably not as much. For the turbo, just make sure it isn't pulling in 160 degree air from the radiator. Try to give it some relatively cool air, but don't try too hard. Some sort of intake shield will be fine, you don't need to run a pipe to the bumper...but it wouldn't hurt (unless there was a large pressure loss). With a turbo and IC, a CAI just isn't as meaningful as on a NA car.
