101470, What to do..My eclipse Posted by Blackeclipse24, Sep-12-07 11:24 AM
Hey guys new to the forums Well I heard this is a good place to get your 2gnt fast and running. I have 97 eclipse with about 165,000 miles on it. I want to turbo the car bad like real bad. So What i need to know what do i have to do to Boost my car. So far this what i have done ever since getting the eclipse last year. Changed timing belts and water pump, Fuel filter changed and radiator fluids flushed and filled. Change oil every 3,000 have short ram intake i just bought on ebay, Also have full cat back system from eBay, and i have tokico blue shocks and eibach sports line springs so I'm lowered 1.5 all around. Then i have HP 18 black evo rims which look real nice. Honestly i dont have the tools to do any mechanical work but the only thing i do myself is change the oil. The only reason because reason i let my buddy the mechanic to do it because I am afraid to mess it up and don't have the know hows to do certain things. also I don't have a garage to do any mechanical work so when i change oil is when i do it very quick on my neighbors driveway. Now i was wondering what else can i do to my car and do i need to do an engine rebuild if i need to boost the car. Also where can i get the parts in order for a rebuild. Also i need to do a compression test to see my engines life. Well later
p.s. I will have pics of car later and then you guys can comment and reccomend on what should i do.

That's a good start that you've got all the maintenance issues done

There is a huge abundance of info in both the wiki on the main page, and the turbo/nitrous forum here. I recommend starting with GSGoinfast's writeup on putting together a turbo kit, lots of great info in that. It is best to spend a few days reading as you will be able to get an idea of what you want to do for yourself as everyone here is going to have a different opinion on how to go about turbocharging your car.

There's a few places, concept illusions, howellautomotive... I'm blanking on others.

That's a good start with getting to know your engine.

You are in luck, I am doing a writeup on using an eBay turbo and it will be put on my car on friday. They have been known to not be TOO reliable (about 50/50 chance of them working and not) so I am taking a big gamble on trying on out, but it's a cheap fix for the time being.
http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=eBay%20Turbocharger%20Writeup
I turboed my car for around a grand total of $2000, but I know for a fact it can be done for cheaper with good parts still.
There was a little discussion about the eBay 2.4L engine. I would pass on it as the guy has barely any feedback and you want to send him over 3 grand for an engine that you don't know anything about really? Do some research on here before spending any money on anything, it will help you make some good choices with your hard earned money.
Oh, and welcome to the site.

In addition to the lack of feedback, there's more work to be done to install a 2.4l, it does not directly drop in, although there is not a ton more work, it would definetly require you to read up on more and decide if a 2.4l is for you.

This might be comming out of my mouth because i'm a wuss but i dont recommend turbocharging an engine with that many miles on it.

Mileage is irrelevant. Condition of the motor pre-turboing it is...

+1 high miles are ok, low compression is not.

I think stock is something around 190-210. Is that right?
The way I do compression checks I use a buddy. Drop the tester in the spark plug hole. Open the TB WOT by jamming a screwdriver in there. Then I crank the engine 6-8 compression cycles. Not sure if there is other ways to do it, that's just how I do it.
Welcome to the site. You can find a lot of information just by searching and reading. Enjoy!

Or you can just step on the gas peddle then crank ;)
Don't forget to unplug the fuel relays on the firewall too.
