Hey,
I'm new to the site so lets see if this works out good. I
have a '95 Eclipse RS and have just started pulling the motor
out to start the build up. Does anyone know who builds custom
turbo kits? I do mean custom, I have been considering whether
a twin turbo kit could be made for this car. The way I've
been planning out how everything will fit, it seems to work, I
just need some help from a shop that knows a lot to see if it
can be done. I'm located around the Boston area so any
company locally would be best. I hope to have it be a 500hp
daily driver with the occasional up in boost to about 600hp
for a race weekend. Let me know what you think, and on
average what do you out there think a custom kit like this
would cost to produce?
Thanks,
Phil

So, um, why do you think you need twin turbo?

I just think it's a setup you don't see too much with a 4 cylinder, especially an eclipse na.

Sorry, but there is a reason for that.

My twin turbo setup has been running fine for years. I have posted some details and a complete walk-thru to help you with your install. Scroll down a little to find it and good luck with the project.:thumbsup

HAHAHHAHAAHA That was one of the best replies I have EVAR seen!

Twin Turbo 4 cyl... what the hell would be the point of that???

And how you would even fit 2 turbo's in that engine bay I dont know, I can barely fit one custom manifold and big turby.

I just needed some civilized people just to give me a name of a company, but I guess I'll do it without anyones help on here. I just thought this was the best place to find help considering your all 2gnt owners; but if you don't want to help a fellow 2gnt owner then I would appreciate it if you just kept your wise-ass remarks out of this thread.
Thanks

I can tell your young and dumb. Dont come to this community and ask for help for rediculous questions like you are.

Give me one reason you want to twin turbo a 420a motor ?

You want to twin turbo a 420a because you want something different...if you want to a big dawg, and do something different, try to compete with the guy in the General section who is building a monster 2gnt car. You are a newbie and if you plan to come to this site and make remarks like your wise-ass did, you wont last long around here. Your going to be disrespected on either every post you make or you will just be banned.

2gnt does not take shit from new kids like you. If you want help with something, thats fine. We are all here to help one another out, but not on rediculous things like you are asking.

There is NO POINT in twin turbo'ing a 420a engine, plain and simple, NO POINT.

If you want to make big power, build yourself a SINGLE turbo engine and it can be accomplished.

Just read this thread:

We are helping you... To tell you NOT to do it. Seriously, a twin turbo setup would be pointless on your car. To even fit something like that you would have to use some pretty tiny turbos and if you somehow did, it would be lame because the teeny tiny turbos would be maxing out at like 10 psi.

No problem. We were all newbs at one point. Try using the search to answer questions you have about your car. I did a quick search typing "twin turbo" and search titles only and I came up with these. Read up and see why it isn't worth doing.

ok her we go and try and keep up
first off go buy Maximum Boost by Corky Bell
read it all then continue reading

first off true twin turbos (2 of the same size) is stupid for a 4 cylinder
(chapter 3: selecting the turbocharger pg 37)

still want to? then your talking sequential turbocharging
one turbo provides power in the low range and then at a predetermined boost stage a bypas opens and begins to spool the larger turbo therefore by the time the smaller turbos blades are about to go supersonic the larger turbo has reached the crossover and can take over the power requirements.

BMW has it on there 535d, Opel has one for a 4 cyl
3rd gen Mazda RX-7 FD's and Mark IV Toyota Supra's use a variation of this and operate in sequential mode with 2 EQUALY sized turbos instead of the more common parallel mode where both turbos spool at the same time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin-turbo
http://www.lextreme.com/sqtt.html

Cheaper alternative is geting a hold of a Variable Geometry Turbocharger from a 2006 Porsche 911 (997) and making that fit and work

is it possible to do on a 420A? theoretically yes
now for the obstacles

1. manifold design
how do you mount 2 turbos and essentially 3 wastegates?

2. Turbo sizing
you are gonna go Psycho looking at compressor maps and sizing charts id be suprised if your eyes dont start bleeding.
this is the core of the sequential turbo sucess
to big initial and it wount be as efficient as a small single turbo, too small secondary and it will weez out where a larger single will keep going.

3. tuning
stand alone only and able to control between 2 and 3 wastegates for the various stages
$$$$$ for the dyno time required to get these to there full potential

4. Room
this is an ENTIRELY custom job everything is gonna have to be hand fit and fabed up once you figure out how it all works. then you have to figure out how you fit it all in there

just so ya dont think im all bad news, ill leave you with the pics that can get you started if time, money, patience, and the smarts to pull it off

BMW 535D

OPEL

Manifold and turbo setup on 535d

Sequential cutaways

Lets play find the 3 Wastegates

Good Luck
PM me if you need any resorces

Relax man. Your a newb and whenever you come into any site asking questions without searching, your setting yourself up to get flamed. Even if your not a car expert common sense should tell you that some things just shouldn't be done. Coming in here and saying you want to do a twin turbo setup is like saying you wanna install another engine in your trunk and be able to switch which motor your running by flipping a switch. It could probably be done with a shit load of money, but would it make sense? Nope. Get my drift.

Ok since the majority says to go single, I think thats what i'll do. What turbo/size do you think I should go with to achieve the power that I'm looking for? And how hard are custom manifolds to come by, because the way i want it is the intake side facing the left toward the p/s, and also above the manifold, not below.

Can I ask why you want the turbo above the manifold? That wouldnt be very good flow wise.

Also, why do you want the compressor facing the p/s? You should have it swapped the other way, this way you can run a nice routed down pipe.

For a good size turbo to make some decent power, you could go with an SC61 which is what I have, a GT35R which is the same thing or something like Agression uses and some others, possibly a 20g.

Dont go with something huge or else you will never spool it up.

Yah listen to Mike he is very knowledgable and he custom makes almost everything on his car himself.

Definately do your research on the turbo first. I would recommend a BB turbo myself. Plus your goal of 500 daily and 600 track would not be achieved by turboing solely. Plus a lot of poeple don't really get much above the 400's with this platform.

Just really, really take your time and research NOW...you will definately thank yourself later.

Yeah, I don't plan on turboing the motor soon, probably more during the winter. Right now I just want to build up the motor so I know it will be able to handle the power that I am looking for. The reason I wanted the intake side facing the p/s was because I have planned to custom fit the greddy 4-row and since the inlet side is on the left it would be the most efficient place to direct it. As for mounting the turbo above or below, i suppose it doesn't really matter to me as long i get the most out of the system. What internals do you all think I should run with the power that I want out of it, since that is the first thing I am going to do.
Thanks again,
Phil

You can check out

www.howellautomotive.com or www.exileracing.com

They both sell good bottom end and top end kits for our cars.

I would suggest running a 8.8:1 compression with JE Rings.

You can find all the info you need quickly by using the SEARCH function on the tool bar above.

Also with the amount of power you are trying to achieve I would recommend 60mm TB, and a fully P&P intake mani and head. Also a nice 5 angle and some Crower 2's will be in order. You also might want to think about Howell's 2.2 setup.

Good luck!

The most common thing to do is bore it out around 20 over just to make sure the walls are true.

KISS (words to live by)
Keep It Simple Stupid

and like these guys said use the search button

do some reasearch 600 hp daily driven thats A JOKE RIGHT. there is a guy posting about his drag 420a with 30k into it shooting for that range.

you dont like getting flamed. we dont like answering dumb questions.
hmm there is a answer somewhere.

stop asking dumb questions

Im guessing you dont have a staff serving you 24/7.
(hint) you dont have one here either.

Sometimes, i want to beat my head against a wall when people talk about 4 cyl tt engines. Doesn't make sense. Isn't practical. I got asked by this retard who lives two houses down if I had "the twin turbo eclipse because of the hump in the hood". My brother gloats about how he's going to build a crx with twin turbos.....retarded.

About the stroker crank, howell says you'll have to bore 60 thou over to get true 2.2L displacement. Yeah, callies cranks are good. Scat makes crankshafts for our cars i believe and they are far from shit like the name implies.

So you want a balls deep racecar with 500-600hp to the front wheels that you'll drive daily? Why? What sense does it make to even shoot that high for a daily driver. A front wheel drive daily driver that when finished, will cost more than a turbo supra or FD Rx7 in near-mint condition. I guess what i'm trying to say is start small and keep your goals progressive. Stick to one easily obtainable goal and work from there.

Think realistically or you'll be sorely dissapointed. While you're gutting out this eclipse of yours, do you have something else to drive? Will this project have proper funding to meet your REAL goals before you lose interest? Start asking yourself questions and use google to find the answers you cant.

as you can see from before the twin turbo idea has been done with; and like i just state it was just an idea. I am currently driving an RX300 for a D.D. and make roughly $1400 a month to help me in my build. and if I'm not mistaken i believe Howell says that you only need to bore 40 over in order to achieve the 2.2L, the stripping has already begun, everything is pretty much out of the car. I was currently at the junkyard and found an eclipse with rear discs so I'll probably be doing that conversion within the next couple of days. Motor is completely stripped, I'm just having a little trouble removing the oil pump gear to get the crank out, but hopefully I'll have it out by this weekend. And I will be ordering the crank from Howell alone within the next week, and hopefully the rods, bearings and pistons, by the mid of September from either SlowBoyRacing or ExileRacing. Well that's pretty much it for now.

I understand it's done with. It's just the more i hear about people wanting to twin charge a 4 banger, the more i want to rip my lungs out with a meat hook and jump off a four story building. Maybe it's just me that's sick of hearing about it.... I dunno. Forget i said anything about the matter.

Sounds like you've got your head on straight now though. 60 over, 40 over....my mistake. I haven't been on howells site in a while though i was tempted to put the kit on my list until i found other ways to skin a cat. Good luck with your build.

Ronin is right though. For a practical street car, 250-300ish hp is the number you wanna shoot for. There are ways to have your cake and eat it too but I'm going to tell you that road is long, hard, and expensive. If you've seen the doodads and gadgets in the 400+ hp gst's, civics, integras to keep things in check then you know exactly what i'm talking about.

It would be pretty cool to see someone twin charge a 2gnt, pull off something like the old crazy group B rally cars with turbos feeding superchargers, 500+ horses out of a 1.8 litre Audi. of course it's financially stupid and totally useless, but it'd be fun.

realistically 300 horsepower is about all that's useable on the street in a FWD car unless you make the rear suspension so stiff that it feels like someone is kidney punching you VERY hard. otherwise you just burn off tires. there are limits to what a car can make use of and still maintain any kind of civility. I've been in some 250-300 horse FWD cars, VERY FUN! I've been in 400+ horse FWD cars, you had to play with the throttle and clutch soooo much to keep the tires from spinning it was highly aggrivating, not fun at all. 300 horses is plenty to catch any corvette asshat way off guard and put a huge smile on your face
