100729, Wishing I never turbo'd. Need help! Posted by Diamob, Jul-06-07 07:48 AM
Hey everyone. I finished my turbo install last week, and I've had nothing but serious problems every since. The first, and biggest problem is the extreme amount of oil and smoke coming from my valve breather. I would say after about 5 minutes of normal driving, I lose 1/2 quart of oil due to this. I installed a breather filter, as I've seen other people have and it just made the problem worse.
Another problem is the huge amount of boost that builds up, I'm running a Hahn Super 16G, with a 5 PSI wastegate, and when I give it enough gas the gauge reads 16 - 17 PSI. I'm not driving it anymore because I'm afraid I'm going to cause permanent damage to my engine. Lastly, there is dirty oil in my intake piping. Would anyone know what would be the cause and cure for the oil? The boost isn't a huge deal as I can control it, the oil is whats keeping me from driving my car.
Thanks in advance everyone. Nick

Yeah that's definetly a problem, that shouldn't be happening.

Are you sure it's a 5psi wastegate? If so, double check your lines make sure there's not a leak or that the boost source for the wastegate is not disconnected at either end. That's really all I can think of as being your boost problem unless someone welded the flapper shut so they could use an external gate.

Very possible, especially if you let it build that much boost, especially on a stock bottom end with injectors that are only good to about 8psi

Sometimes you'll see this a bit. What size oil supply line are you using? Sometimes too large of a supply line without a restrictor and there is going to be too much oil going to the turbo forcing it out. The seals can also be bad if you bought the turbo used.
Don't get discouraged now, with the help of others responding and the search button, you should be able to diagnose and fix all your problems and then boost happily for a while

It's possible there's a leak in the wastegate line. The turbo was used, so it's possible the seals are bad... Would it be hard to replace them?
I think that the worst problem is the smoke and oil coming out of the breather, that's what is really scaring me. The car is running smooth however, so I don't know.

I dont think on a S16g the turbo would be that messed up to cause that much of a problem, I would check all your vacuum lines first.

Well, there was a crack in the wastegate hose, how that happened who knows... I'm gonna give it a quick drive and see if that fixed the boost problem.

you may have to take the valve cover off to see if something is stuck in there. I had a simular problem and the valve wasn't closing and cause this at least that is what the shop said. Took the head off and had a three angle job and it work quite nicely aftwards.. But can't tell you what the problem is so your better off looking in there and seeing if you can notice something.

You're seeing 16-17psi of boost just with normal driving? There's no way you could *accidentally* spool a 20G to make that kind of pressure. Are you sure you're not reading 16-17inHg of vacuum?

Well, replacing the hose didn't do much. Smoke is still coming out of the breather however. I'm kind of uneasy about taking my valve cover off. Any other alternatives?
It's a good possibility that I'm seeing vac instead of boost, what's a good line to hook the boost gauge line to?

Anywhere off the intake manifold is fine... my question was more concerning whether or not you're reading the gauge right. I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but you do know which side of the gauge represents which, correct?

Everybody seems to be avoiding it, BUT I would do a comp test.

Yeah, me too.
Before you installed the turbo, what did you do to your motor?
How many miles are on said motor?

this may also be an insult at your intellegence and i appalogize if i offend you, but youre not some how feeding boost into your crank case are you? check you pcv to see if its functioning correctly. and why are you scared to remove your valve cover? if you installed a turbo system, theres no reason you should not be capable of removing and few screws from your valve cover. youll probably want to have a replacement gasket ready though, reusing them usually causes leaking. however i dont see how a stuck valve would cause smoke out the breather. and i would have to agree that under noraml driving you shouldnt be spooling that turbo that fast, i have a 16g on my 4g63 talon and i dont hit 15 psi unless im really getting on it.

don't worry it's fairly easy. There's a write-up in the wiki about it somewhere, I'll try and find it for you.

The 16g bolted to my 4g63 spools quickly ;) I see 20psi faster in the Evo than I see 8psi in the eclipse LOL

As far as insulting my intelligence, I don't think of anything that way, I'm doing this as a learning experience, and yes I know how to read the gauge. And the reason I'm so hesitant to take off my valve cover is probably due to what people I know are telling me, which are quite possibly false.
I don't really know how I would be feeding boost into my crankcase what would cause that to happen? The whole PCV valve being bad has me interested. How would I check to make sure it's working properly?
And as far as the motor, it has just over 100k miles on it, and due to a blown headgasket I had my head completely resurfaced and cleaned up just about 4 months ago. Another thing I forgot to bring to attention, my car had been losing oil before I turbo'd it (properly putting a quart in every 2 weeks.) it wasn't smoking, and there were no drops on my driveway, or oil anywhere on my engine, this had me.
Thanks again everyone I hope this helps a bit more :).

Don't even bother they are only like $3-$5 just pick one up and swap them out :)

That's a lot of oil to be losing every two weeks, have you checked to see if there's any in your coolant?

Question:
If you're losing oil like that mysteriously, why turbo your car when you havent fixed the problem yet.
If you're not leaving oil spots all over the place, it's either going into the intake, your coolant system or both.

yeah, if the back of the car isn't freckled with oil then there must be a leprichaun stealing oil. i agree with a compression test. at 16psi, you might have some cracked ringlands. that would cause exsessive crankcase pressure too.

damn those little green bastards and their greed. first the had the gold and now our oil!!
But anyways, are you sure your car is not smoking? i thought mine was running great, then one night a buddy followed me home from work, and when we got to my place he's like " hey man your car is blowin smoke through first and a little of second. Not much but its smokin." so i checked the oil and sure enough it was low. I still cant see it smoking to this day even if i angle my drivers mirror down to look at the bumper, but it shows on the dipstick. i go through a quart in a week or two. (roughly 300-500 miles (but mine leaks some of it out too, i have spots on the ground).)
Good luck, sorry for the long ass post.

how many miles where on your motor before you went turbo? I've had cars in the past that started blowin oil out of the valve cover when the rings started goin. I've even had the dipstick blow out. I would deff do a compression test, if you can change your spark plugs you can check your compression. You should be able to get everything you need from a local parts store for pretty cheap and it only takes a few minutes to check each cylinder. Also, does the canister on the waste gate actuator have 2 ports? Do you have the vacuum line hooked up to the wrong one? A friend of mine did this when he turbo's his integra and found 21 psi real quick with his 16G...
