So I went to the track last week and before I went I bypassed my PCV system and have both outlets on the VC running to my catch can. After 3 passes and a few pulls on the highway, not a drop of oil in the can :)

I do have a decent amount of blow-by gases escaping out of the catch can breather when idling(about as much as a lit cigarette or two) and wondered if anyone runs the full atmoshpering crankcase ventilation setup too. I just did a compression check and its 200psi across the board. I'm assuming this is a normal amount considering it normalling would just be sucked into the intake with the stock PCV system. Just wanna make sure. Thanks guys.




P.S. I have had a bad ringland before and know how much blow-by comes out of the breather when that happens and this is WAYYY less,lol. Before someone mentioned the ringland thing.

I don't, and here's why I probably never will...

I did a research on this subject a while back. Apparently, back in the day, long before PCV systems, engines used to just have ventilation tubes. This ventilation system was basically equivalent to what you're running: an open system routed to a catch can (or more commonly, pointed to the ground).

Ok, so what's wrong with that? It seemed as though an open system would work just fine, and that these new fangled closed systems were just an EPA measure to further protect the environment. Screw the environment...

Well, it turns out that's not quite true. Most all-out drag racers run dry sump lubrication systems, which require non-integral oil pumps. These high performance oil pumps tend to create lots of vacuum, which can be used to operate the PCV systems. Bottom line, this high vacuum more efficiently scavenges for blow-by, then any open/passive system can.

The benefits of a highly efficient PCV system aren't necessarily apparent, but they include longer lasting motor oil, and even more power (I'm not sure about the principles behind this one... but I swear I read that these dragsters actually reported greater power).

Anyway, that's why I would keep a closed system.

I'm not trying to siphon off any 2GNT users here, but I distinctly remember reading several threads on DSMTuners where users found suitable check valves on McMaster.

I know the benefits of a small vacuum source clearing the gases from the crankcase constantly. And yes, it does reduce friction and minimizes oil contamination, resulting in a small gain in performance. I will eventually go with either an intake vacuum source with an inline catch can (before turbo) or an exhaust evacuation setup. This was just to keep my PCV blow-by from filling my catch can with 2-4 ounces of oil every time I go to the track (temporary fix). The OEM PCV valves just suck. I was going to go with a check valve setup but I'd prefer one of the other two I mentioned.

Thanks for the lesson on the importance of the PCV characteristics but I know all about it. I just wondered how MUCH blow-by is generally seen in this setup.

I figured you knew most of what I wrote, I just thought I'd share for everyone else who came across this thread.

Check the legality of exhaust-type PCV setups, I know some tracks/racing organizations won't allow it.

yeah, your not allowed the possibility to drip on to the track. well, i have a simmilar setup and i get no smoke, verry little air, a couple oz. of condensation in an oil change(a couple months), and a little oil residue in the can.
