I recently finished my turbo project, and I'm having issues with the valve breather misting oil out....so I know I need an oil catch can to solve this problem and I've seen alot of people have been using mountaindew and water bottles and a temp fix...but I wanted to see some pics of where you have located yours and what brand/design would you recommend?

I would recommend a GReddy catch can. Not too many options. I have seen many "do it yourself" catch cans, they say they work as well as expensive ones. Not sure of the best place to put one on a turbo'd engine.

i have mine mounted on the firewall on the side of the map sensor . im using a cambells soup can lol . it works great and i have the breather line and pcv line attached to it .

i have an ebay dark annodized blue one mounted where the stock air filter box was. both valve cover lines going to it and a big ass hole drilled in the top of the can. works like a champine. looks good too.

totaleclipse_05...I was referring to your pic when I said waterbottle...and a soup can....wow that is great. more pics please ....another questions...when you run the line from the Pcv on the valve cover to the oil catch...what do you with the open vacccum on the intake manifold?

Most people plug it with a rubber nipple. The PCV system is actually a better system but people with high boost pressures (10psi and up) tend to bypass the pcv system all together. Whenever possible, get a PCV valve that seals up VERY well and just add the catch can to the spout you have the breather on.

I've seen oil catch cans that have no filter on them... can you hook up both the breather line on the VC and also the PVC line on the VC to the catch, without having a breather on either the catch can or the valve cover?

and as far as the vaccum cource on the intake...use it for the line to the BOV?

No, those are for inline setups when you have the breather port on the VC hooked up to one end and the other end goes to the intake piping (before the turbo). You see this a lot with the 4G63 guys. Some people have put them inline with the VC and PCV valve to minimize oil buildup in the intake manifold too.

If you are running more than 10 psi, yes. If you are not, this is a better solution for a daily driver.

less fume evacuation, unless you are boosting constantly the fumes dont just find the outlet. The pcv makes sure the harmful fumes are sucked out of the crankcase so they won't contaminate the oil and cause friction.

Just a thought...I used a check valve from Mcmaster carr (P/N 7775K13) in place of my pcv. I made a stainless catch can that mounts where my windsheld washerfluid resivoir used to be mounted and the checkvalve is on top. It's cracking pressure is really low(I can easily breath in through it) but it has a max pressure of 1000 psi...um..yeah... Two -10 briaded lines going from the valve cover to the catch can, a breather on both original lines coming out, and the check valve goes back to the intake. No oily mess, no oil in the intake, and it looks good to. The other brass barbs go to the evap system, and theres a petcock on the bottom to drain it off. The -10 lines haven't been drilled and tapped in this pic but it gives an idea.

Nice welds man! looks pretty good, i'm doing mine out of -6AN line.
i never thought of the evap system shoving crap into the intake system, i'll have to look into that.

in regards to the check-valve. do you have your return plumbed before the compressor, the upper IC pipe, or the manifold itself?

if it's on the IC pipe i would think it would never draw vacuum since its always gonna be pressurised, however if its on the manifold itself (downstream of the TB) then i can see the need for a check valve, but if it was before the compressor wouldn't you not need a check valve?

not knocking your design in any way sir, just wondering on the physics and best possible placement and all around just curiously discussing this topic.

thanks, I weld stainless every day. built it out of scraps from the dumpster...lmao! I ran the return line to the back of the intake where it brake booster line used to run with a -12 line and I drilled it out to 1/2" NPT. All my vacuum crap runs off a vacuum bar hanging off the fire wall where the cruise used to be. As far as the EVAP, I used to work for a dealership part time and tested them out fixin CEL lights. They're only supposed to have 1psi max through them on our cars cuz it messes with the small pump in the back. And besides, if your running a decent amount of boost why would you want hot gas fumes mixing with your intake charge? My EGR has been blocked off too along with everything else not needed for night cruises and days at the track.

Exhaust systems have a certain amount of vacuum in them that is created by the rate of exhaust flow. At higher RPM's the gas flow is faster and thus creating a higher level of vacuum.

now with that being said:

You can run the PCV and valvecover breather into a vac canister with the proper check valves inline. You now run a vac line to a port in the exhaust pipe that will use the exhaust vacuum to draw out any positive pressure in the crankcase. The canister will accumulate airated oil and will still need to be drained at some point.

Now the details of WickedESI's setup i am not aware of but this is the basic concept.

I've had people tell me to just put a breather filter on the vac line that should go into the intake and block off the intake with a self tapping screw and a rubber gromet or something.

I think i'll do what you guys are doing.

This is my plan for a catchcan...



Quick and simple... it goes inline between the intake manifold and valve cover, replacing the PCV valve.

The other side of the valve cover gets a breather filter.

Check valve with Viton seat to prevent backflow under boost, thumb screw/flow valve to adjust for idle problems (mostly with 4G63 and MAF cars), and interior baffles.

I like that idea. What kind of check valve are you going to use? And what kind of pressure range is our oem check valve in the pcv system? I've been looking for some kind of higher quality replacement valve for sometime now...

The checkvalve is custom made for this application using a precision made steel ball, and a matching Viton seat.

I have no idea what pressure the OEM PCV can withstand, but I wouldn't guess more than 15psi or so: they weren't designed with boost in mind.

That's just my recommendation until I can find time and the resources to develop this "all in one" unit.

Yea, I'm already using a ready made catch can, but I haven't been able to find a good replacement check valve yet. The stock one sucks. I have purchased several other cheapies at the local hardware store but none of them open under the appropriate vacuum.

I can probably make a check valve just find out what pressure you want it. I make/repair valves for a living. I work for a machine shop that repairs and make Natural Gas Compressors. So I'm all about pressure.

A grainger valve could easily be modified just to find a cracking pressure for a check valve... I used one in my shadow just to control crank case vaccum. it was meant for testing and became permanent.

Hey guys I've got another question to add to this discussion.

Is it possible to run both the PCV and crankcase breather to the oil catch can, but instead of having a small breather filter on top of the catch - have a vacuum line run to the intake manifold where the PCV used to be attached? Would this give you the benefits of the PCV system with sucking all the gasses out but allow the oil to drip down into the catch and not get sucked all the way through to the manifold?

I read that it is a good idea to keep the PCV if less than 10psi, but I plan to be boosting more than that. If I did not describe that clear enough I will draw a quick sketch and post it.
