100203, Guages, power and destruction(long)
Posted by Idontgotnothn88, May-20-07 04:54 PM
Im installing my guages boost, air/fuel, and oil pressure, they are autometer. Here is what happened I had my power wire hooked up to the green wire on the cigerette lighter (i searched and thats what I found to use). The guages would only power up when i would turn on the lights on. So I tried to find other power wires that would work when I would turn the car on like it should by splicing and touching other wires that i knew had power (I didnt think before i acted i know thats really retarded and now im paying the consequence) anyways my first try was the power wire to my stereo. (Im doing this in the dark by the way so i have my rearview mirror lights on) They turn on and im happy. I took the keys outa the ignition because i figured they would still have power since they are connected to the battery wire, they still had power then about 5 secounds later, the lights on the rearview mirror go out I put the keys back into get power and the stereo deosnt have power the power wire to cigerette lighter has no power and the rearview mirror lights wont turn on. my headlights and dashlights still work and the light my ashtray still works everything still works except for those 3 things. My car starts up fine but those 3 things still wont turn on. Fuses look fine. Dont critisize my retardedness just help me figure out what to do. Since im on the topic of guages anyways Ive been trying to figure out how to install it and all i could find searching was to get a reducer and tee which i have but i dont know where to hook up the wires I have white wire 2 black wires and green one where do i hook these up. sorry for the longevity.

Soooo, are these wires for all the gauges or are you trying to hook up one specifically or what?

Well if it's an Autometer gauge, there should be one white and one black wire for the light bulb and 3 spots to put wires on the back (either using female spade or circle connectors). They should have letters designating which one is which on the back of the gauge, one should be a power wire, one should be a source power, and one should be a ground. You need to feed the source wire to the engine bay and connect it to the sender that goes on the back of the block.

so should i splice the wires into the stock unit or just buy a new plug. Are there any ideas what could be wrong with the mirror radio and light its still mystery to me?

you will have to Tee off of the back of the block and attach the autometer sender to one leg of the tee and the stock sender to the other leg. you cant splice into the stock sender it wont read right on the autometer.

Well your lights really sound like a fuse problem. did you check the underhood fuses as well as the ones under the dash? Thats what my money is on. It also sound lke you wired the gauges to the illum on the cigarette lighter when you should have went into the lighter wire itself. then they would have come on only when your keys are on.

thank you thats the one i was looking for. I will check every fuse in the morning. Okay so im just really retarded. Deos anyone have any pics or a diagram of what the wires from the oil pressure guage to the oil pressure sender looks like cuz the wires i ahve are all cut up and there is no attachment so i dont know what to connect the wires too even tho yall are telling what exactly to do, which i thank you all very much for your help with.

It's really not that hard dude. Autometer includes directions with the gauge even. Here is the most basic setup I drew up in 1 min to help. If you wish to utilize the stock oil pressure sender as well, you will need a T-fitting (hardware store) to connect to the block and put the stock sender on one end and the autometer on another. Search for the sizes as I don't remember offhand.

I'll do you one better, Mike. This example features a t-fitting to allow installation of a sending unit and a future feed line for a turbo that never happened. :P

This is a bit of overkill and not the way I would do it, if I did it again. I'd install the fitting in the block, then run a length of hose up to the firewall somewhere convenient. Then I'd install a fitting there and have an easy place to connect to the oil.

i know my problem as to y i cant figure out how to hook up the oil pressure guage. when i bought the guages (used) it didnt come with the autoguage pressure sender. i will now go slam my head with the car door.
