99213, Lets talk body kits. Posted by 2GeclipseRS, Jun-20-07 05:34 PM
So i'm getting deeper in my project now and seeking a bit more aftermarket stuff.
I wasn't going to kit my car but i'm going to treat myself after i get my engine running tip top. This will also include a pair of amps, a sub, and some high powered mids and highs. That's a different topic though!
Now, i'm wanting a drift front bumper, buddy club sides, and a blitz rear. I just want that circut look for my car.
Extreme dimensions has the rear bumper and skirts for $225 a peice and the skirts are like $125 or something. I've seen atleast 5 different variations of the blitz bumper. Who sells the one that's got the fully open lower section? I mean, i could cut out the other variations but i dont know if the factory mounting points are connected to the piece that's gotta come out. Following me? I hope.
Also is anyone selling the drift front bumper in urethane? V-fiber boasts that you can beat on their shit with a hammer and flex it like urethane without it cracking. I've never had a kit before and i dont want something that's going to break if i bottom out pulling in somewhere. I mean, the kit has to have some give to it. Every company (high end companies anyway) has their own fiber compounds and they all act differently so naturally, i'm asking you guys to help me decide who'd be the best to go with and any measures i can take to get more life out of a kit. I go to charlotte, NC often and the roads and business entrances aren't exactly what you'd call "lowered car/body kit friendy".
Thanks for reading my jibberish and i hope somebody understands.

It's good that your looking into the urethane kits because fiberglass will crack really bad especially if the roads are bad in your area like you said. The prices you threw out there per piece sound kind of high though. I purchased my kit off of different private sellers on ebay and ended up paying a little over $300 for the complete kit. I would recommend that you take your time and really think about maybe just getting a nice rsdsm lip for the front bumper and going for the clean look. Many members on here have decided to go back to stock bumpers after having body kits on their cars. Here is a pic of one of my favorite clean 2g's.
There are also many negatives to putting on a bodykit which you should consider which are the paint cracking often since the kit flexes a lot, having to worry about scraping everytime you go over a speedbump or up a driveway (especially if your car is lowered), and sticking out like a sore thumb to cops, thieves, or any dumb kid that wants to vandalize a nice car.

If do go with fiberglass, reinforce it with some sheet metal. It'll do wonders.

yeah before u buy a body kit make shure its what u REALLY want. Because when i first got my car i thought body kits were the coolest, so i saved up and bought one, then i saved enough to get it installed(just for the record im a poor college kid with a part time job). Now after its installed i am kicking myself for getting it becuase 1. i could have bought the turbo kit im saving for and 2. i actually like the stock, clean look more. Dont get me wrong i love how the car looks but its ur car and ur money so do what makes YOU happy. But thats just my experience.

ditto....My car now looks like shat and I am on my third fibo front end. Think it out man...My problem was mainly to do with the roads around me being trash and my teins are way way low so things may work out better for you but definately think it out.

I've seen what the lines look like. They match. I could care less what other people think about how my car looks. It's not for everyone to enjoy, just me. If i'm happy with it and proud of it, that's all that matters. I was going to own people at the track with a sleeper but i just want i car i can be proud to drive and when people ask "who did all your work?" I can say "i did" and possibly get the business of others in the process. I'm already pretty ace at fiberglass boxes and body work. I find that stuff very easy. I have a good background in welding and fabrication as well. I've helped build and tune several 200hp all motor b18/b20 powered honda crx's and civic hb's (though our cars are alot more harder to extract power from than a honduh......anyone can build a honda).
Now, if you think i'm just going to kit my car, lower it on some e-bay coilovers, bolt on a muffler and call it a day...you're preaching your crap to the wrong guy.
This car will be as fast as it looks. I'm honing the block, putting in new stock pistons and spraying a 50 shot wet kit. I already have a cold air intake (which is made from the stock intake, a skunk 2 short ram, and some random filter). The plugs, wires, and coilpack are getting replaced with higher output units. I'm replacing the entire exhaust from the headers back with a test pipe. The suspension is getting fully worked over and i'm keeping the car audio simple. 1 12" sub, 1 small 500rms at 2ohm kenwood amp, 1 small 200x4 at 2 ohm m/a audio amp, clarion components, and a clarion mp3 deck so i can listen to my ipod. 18" motegi dp5's will be sitting in my wheel wells mated to 215/45 nitto 555's. That's just what's going on this year along with the body kit, a re-tint (old shit is peeling like hell), and a re-spray in the factory gloss black color.
From there, i'll start hoarding parts. 16g turbo, fmic, FMU, msd ignition for timing advance/retard, 450cc injectors, SAFC, wideband, egt w/probe, 8.6:1 .020" weisco pistions with eagle h-beams and total seal rings, phantom grip, New gears will be ordered and sent off for cryo treatment, crower stage I turbo cams, Crower ti retainers, crower springs, ferra oversized valves, pt lifters/rockers, act stage 1 modular clutch, fidanza axles, walbro 255, flywheel and short throw shifter....ect....
The only thing i'm really debating on is compression ratio. I really dont want to have to run the most expensive gas ever but high cr has that hard low rpm hit to help with turbo lag. Detonation is a very bad thing though so right now it's a toss up until i've fully researched boost with high cr.
Now that that's been sorted, i'll address everyone else who's actually trying to help.
I was close to buying a front lip and some 2gb sides with a oem turbo spoiler but when i took my fender off to get the horrible dent out of it (right behind the headlamp with a nice crease closest to the bumper), I noticed my bumper was cracked on the upper edge closest to the wheel well. It's repairable and i plan on keeping it/fixing it. That car looks hot but imo, the turbo wing is what pulls everything together. I like that car but i want something a wee bit different. I saw that grey eclipse on here with the drift kit/blitz rear and invader hood and i thought it looked the sex. I'm probably going with a oem style carbon hood when i find one going for the right price instead of the invader though. I did find the whole kit for $299. The company that sells the kit is an authorized distributor for v-fiber, vis, and extreme dimensions so i know i'm not getting a knock off shitbox kit. I'll also add a carbon lower splitter and stabilizers for it too.
I also chose to go wingless(getting the holes filled after i finish my stock trim rebuild). I've seen our cars with the stock body and no wing and it just seems like something is missing. I'm a 240/sil fan and since they are so damn hard to find, i figure i can integrate that overall theme into the look of my car. All i'm really doing is flattening the deck and smoothing out the front end of the car so everything flows. Dont worry, i'm not putting ugly ass graphics, m3/f1 mirrors or altezzas on my car. Wouldn't dream of it. Nothing burns me more than a tacked up car. Just because a car has a kit on it doesn't mean it's rice and some people should learn that before shooting their mouths off.

Maybe not, but most kits feign performance they can not deliver. Rather than modifying a car to look faster than it really is (although body kits generally fail to make a car look anything beyond cheap and tacky), just give some thought to a high quality paint job or something like that.
Body kits, the Blitz front piece in particular, generate attention alright, but 99% of it is in the form of pointing and laughing. Nothing beats a 2GB Eclipse front clip filled with an intercooler. (And this comes from a Talon owner.)
Just saying. Form follows function. A guitar is just a guitar until someone like Clapton picks it up and does something with it. ;)

Soo true although 97-98 talons are sexy as hell. If my intercooler wasn't so small, I'd probably go to a 2gb bumper but the star one just wont fill it up and I don't have the extra dough laying around. Still attached to the stillen somewhat also

Stock manifold has a crack inbetween the 2nd and 3rd runners. Stock exhaust is rust-rotted to fuck. I had to stick weld (i hate stick welding anything) patches cut from another exhaust to patch up the holes. Yes it was loud. Illegal loud. Ebay usually has good deals on headers. I'm sure i can get a junkyard gst exhaust for next to nothing. Good sounding mufflers aren't too expensive.... Test pipe, well i can fab up my own using some stock sized piping and some flanges. I have shop access now (thank god). The whole hollowed out cat doesn't do it for me. I'll mandrel bend and weld up some 3" piping and slap a high end muffler on after the car is boosted. That should set your mind at ease there. Trust me, i actually need this stuff to drive my car and have it safe but fun at the same time kinda....
Turbo is a ways off. Honestly, i could just skip the nitrous all together and run 6psi on a stock rebuilt with a walbro 255 and have boost probably this winter or next spring.
I'm still waiting on my buddy to quit messing with fat girls so we can talk about me buying some of his good parts off his wrecked gst. Hes got the 16's just sitting there in a shed doing nothing and already told me i can have them, he just hasn't been home or stopped in. Ass. I'd really save a bunch just by copping those, stripping off the chrome and painting them. He's also got a full catback and some other stuff. Who knows? I'm really hoping he comes through so i can save some money for other things.
I suppose it would be smart to go ahead and just keep the stock kit. You kill-joys. I'll run to the junkyard next month and hopefully i can find what i need to get the car looking not as fugly as it does now. I need door handles. I most definately want 2gb skirts and a turbo wing. I guess you guys finally sold me on keeping the eclipse's body in stock trim. I'll save the money for suspension/grip/hp which will probably put a bigger smile on my face anyway.
Oh goody, my check for selling my stock shares JUST came in the mail so i guess i'll deposit this jawn monday, order some stuff from parts dinosaur tuesday and start calling junkyards to see if they have any eclipses hanging out.
You know what, you guys are killing me. What's up with a large bit of eclipse tuners running an fmu with 450cc injectors and an safc then? Ok, back to the drawing board. Glad i got owned before i paid for the shit then.
Some of my friends even got on my ass about the order i'm doing shit in and how my car doesn't need a kit...ever. I guess i'll listen for once.
So here it goes (broken down) of my revised plan for the car.
1. finish gathering my rebuild parts. When i take the head off (i need to put a gasket on there anyway), i'll see what condition everything is in and hopefully i dont need to replace all that much. If i have deep scratches in my cylinder walls, i'll skip over the howell block completely and just bore this one over .020" and drop some 8.8's in there and do the main and rod bearings at the same time. Safe bet, right? Best of luck, it just needs to be honed and re-ringed so i can drive my car sooner and hopefully have two engines to tinker with eventually.
2. source door handles, driver side fender, 2gb skirts, turbo spoiler
3. Wheels and tires
4. Tokico illuminas with tokico springs for a 1.5" drop
5. SPC or whatever it is andys autosport sells camber kit
6. header. Either a junkyard part or one of those $60 ebay ones.
7. Gst/gsx exhaust teamed up with an aftermarket muffler and custom test pipe
8. finish up whatever is left of the body work, if any and get the car repainted the color it came in from the factory. BLACK. I'll probably have to wetsand and buff the clear myself but that's not hard and it's not a big deal. Done it before and i actually enjoy doing it.
9. Pay a shop to do a re-tint.
10. drivetrain overhaul
11. Mad saving for turbo goodies (i guess i'll run 6 psi on an internally gated 16g w/ a walbro 255, missing link, smfu and an afc at this stage. I should be able to find an safc used for a good price and i can always re-sell it when i get to the bottom of this list. I'll be pm-ing one of you about obtaining a log manifold)
12. saving for howell shortblock if the stock engine checks out ok
13. I've got a toss-up right now with the headwork. Some guys are making good power numbers with just stock heads and aftermarket cams. I'm looking into what's going to be in my best interest money and performance wise and just shoot for that. My goal was 300 hp but i'd be happy with 250ish.
14. Full fuel system upgrade, Copping megasquirt and a datalogger, bigger injectors.... I'll be fabbing up a stainless turbo manifold and a 3" stainless full exhaust too at this point. FYI, Other people outside of this forum have also told me i'd be smart to just get megasquirt and have someone else set it up for me.
15. All the good stuff between 12 and 14 gets put into the car and then i spend some time at the track tuning. I need to ask my neighboor (guy with the shop) if there is a dyno in the area that he uses for his cars. I swear, i wish i had met this guy sooner. Car audio guru, builds racecars, restores old school v-dubs and he's been my neighboor for three years! I just started shooting the shit with him last month. He saw me outside working on the rs and that was that. I always thought he was a drug dealer because of all the hooked up cars comming in and out of there. Hehe.
But yeah, give me some feedback. It's funny how this went from body kits to mechanicals real fast. But really, you guys are right. Fuck the kit. I did want something different but the difference between my eclipse and the next guys' is what's going under the hood and under the chassis. You'll have to excuse my stubborness and misinformed decisions. My bad. Really though, i cant remember the links off the top of my head but i've seen it alot: (450cc's, safc, basic fmu).
That is probably the longest post i have ever typed in my life. I guess i'm just happy about finally having a hobby car of my own instead of vicariously living through other people's cars. My body says skateboarding and bmx isn't working anymore so it's time i started this. I've paid more cash into skateboarding and bmx than i probably will ever pay into my car. No joke. The current bike i have downstairs right now took about 3 months to get everything and put together for a total cost of about $1,600. Would any of you pay $1,600 for a little kids' bike just to beat the crap out of it and injure yourself constantly on it? Haha.

Just to help you out a bit on the performance end, since I'm not much of a body kit fan I couldn't help you.
You shouldn't have to worry about upgrading plugs, wires, and coil (unless they are bad) because you will not feel any difference in performance by switching those up. Well, you might get a little weight reduction because there will be $200 less in your pockets.
An eBay intake pipe will be just as good as any AEM, Injen, etc intake out there. Just buy a good filter for it also and call it a day.
If you plan on keeping your car non-turbo for a while, you might think about keeping your cat instead of a test pipe. You will probably feel a drop in torque in the lower rpm's by swapping it out. Also, if you plan on turbo down the road, don't bother with a header. You will not be able to use it if you go turbo and will have a paper weight on your hands (unless you sell it to offset some cost).
OK, with the turbo parts. If you plan on using the 450cc injectors, an FMU will be useless to you. Look into SFMU, MSnS, and possibly Hahn's Portfueler. SAFC will be useless for tuning besides fixing an idle with the bigger injectors paired with an SFMU.
Most people go with the 8.8:1 compression ratio when building engines. Some have gone lower with 8.6:1 and some guys have gone even higher. I personally would stick with like a 8.8:1 ratio with forged JE pistons and Eagle rods.
EDIT: Dang, Corey beat me lol.

I can't think of their names off the top of my head but I do think there are a couple people who are boosted on here with 10.5:1 CR. I'm positive there is at least one.

Well, 8.8 seems tried and true. Less of a hassle to get shit done i guess. I was weary about the 10.5:1 but was willing to try it. I used the search and didn't like some of what i read. If i need that low rpm hit bad enough, i can always spray. We'll see. Right now, the car is built in my head and i dont know what kind of traction issues i'll have.
I got you with my m3 mirror comment? Aww. Didn't realize you had them. I really dont like those though....kinda like how people feel about me kitting my car. The stock mirrors or those ones that look like cones are about the only kind i have ever liked on the 2g.
P.S. I have a cai. It's a wonderful combination of the stock intake, silicone couplers, hose clamps, part of a stainless shortram with the vaccum side of it snipped and some random filter. It works. Sounds great. I hardly notice it. With my cat hollowed out, I do notice power in the mid-high range a little bit more. I'll keep whatever header and exhaust i get for the n/a portion of the project just incase something happens and i have to remove the turbo. I have a bad habbit of selling stuff and giving it away and there always seems to be a need for it later.

If you where to get a kit for your car look into the buddy club 2 kits I love the clean look of the 2gb I have the 96style and shipping a 2gb front and rear bumbers to hawaii is like 600 smackers screw that
If you want to go kit here ya go closest thing to a stocker with a nice agressive look very clean

Buddy club 2 all the way around the car with a carbonfiber front splitter under the bumper so you dont bash it in.
Or you could do the best thing, and Brian will agree...

Ok, i remember that car in your sig. Yours was the one i was talking about. I liked how the drift front end looked. Stillen looks good too.
Yeah, i'm set now on not kitting it so nevermind. It's a 98 so i've already got the 2gb front. It just needs to be repaired and reinforced before i put it back on. As soon as i finish my body work and paint prep, i'll post fotos. Still need a driver side fender, door handles, turbo wing, and skirts. Anyone in the market for a 3pc stock wing? Will trade for a fender!

ebay kits SUCK!!!!!! every single one I have ever seen or put my hands on were so poorly made and crappy fitting that they would have cost more to fix them than buying a more expensive hgh quality kit. I tried one myself years ago it took at least 75 hours worth of work to make it decent, not good, just decent. when I tried to call the seller the phone # was disconnected and the ebay account had been cancelled. don't give money to these hacks

So true, I've heard horror stories about cheap body kits. I had a friend get one and the body shop said they couldn't make it fit without hacking the shit outta it. Body parts are one thing where you get what you pay for(which is why I was happy spending what I did on a stillen bumper, or was until I cracked it up) on the other hand things like exhaust can be completely different
