Hey guys,

I looked for half an hour for a post on step-by-step instructions or tips, But the only threads I could fine were involving headers beeing polished.

I was curious if there was a website or maybe you guys could point me in the right direction on how to polish certain components in the engine bay. I just wanted to start with some basic stuff like mounts for the ECU and little parts like that. But I am uncertain as to the process of polishing them, especially under hot conditions under the engine bay (And in Texas :P).

I think those brackets are just painted mild steel... not much to polish. I just took them off, cleaned them up, and painted them flat black.

If you really want that shiny look, you'll probably have to use a "chrome" paint, "chrome" powdercoat, or get them chrome dipped.

Is there any type of high heat resistant chrome or white paint out there you can buy from like an auto shop? (Was thinking of doing white aswell)

there are high temp paints available that will withstand the heat under the hood. As for polishing, it just takes time and patience. If you wanted to try something out, I'd say pick up a spare intake manifold get a dremel and some attachments and quite a bit of different grain sandpapers and have at it.

If you really want, in a few weeks when I get home from school I can send you my spare lower intake manifold for the cost of shipping, sure it's not a part that's really seen, but it might be a cheap investment to teach yourself how to polish

My patience isn't so wonderful, but this is as far as I got with a few hours of work....




I think with a couple more hours and some finer grain sand paper it will look amazing, regardless, it is way nicer than it was to start, just pop your hood and look at yours to compare

Wow that doesnt look bad at all, So did you basically just sand it down, paint it with some chrome paint and add polish to it?

I would also be very interested in the extra part when you get back home.

No, the intake manifold is aluminum. It can actually be polished; hence it doesn't need chrome or silver paint. All it might need is a coat of clear high-temp paint to keep it looking glossy.

So basically, you can polish aluminum, but not so much mild steel... it just wouldn't look good. Stainless is a different story.

Hmmm, Im understanding it now. So what all materials do you need, High Count Sand Paper, Polish, Dremel, Buffer, and lots of paticence :P?

Yeah he did, that valve cover was niiiiice too.... thanks for that link, exactly what i needed to get my vc on point.

Great link. I'm gonna have to add a valve cover polish job to my list of projects to do now that the weather is getting nice.
