whats the point? by the time you cut out the tub and weld in a piece of sheetmetal, your going to lose like what, maybe a pound?

Okay so say it is only 5lbs Terry, is it really worth the effort and labor to doing it? IMO, NO.

Blah Blah, my kit doesnt weigh 50lbs, lol.

Good to see you posting already. I have considered this question myself. But I am looking at this as a much later phase of weight reduction. Since I haven't totally searched this one out yet, I'll give a link that I found interesting on dsmtuners.com.

There are a few reasons I would look at doing this; one is the weight reduction (I know, not much but it's something considering it is at the last phase of my weight reduction schedule).
Another is the LOCATION of weight reduction. I always consider the weight taken off the back of my car as bonus weight reduction because the weight you take off the back of your car changes the front to rear weight ratio to the better. The plan is to get as much weight of the overall car toward the front of the vehicle to help get traction.
Another (that I haven't researched that much) is the underside air flow. If I remove that trunk cavity and punch holes or slots in my parachu.....er rear bumper cover that may help free of some drag.

That being said, you may want to start off with the easier quicker mods. Maybe type into the search function weight reduction and see what you get.
This trunk removal mod is something that I am saving for my last steps of weight reduction.

Actually Mike, I would say it depends on how you use it.

I saw the 2g that Adam at Devotuning built and what he did was remove that section and bolt in a flat piece of aluminum to mount the fuel cell on. It was a pretty clean idea.

Just for weight savings? I would agree with you, there are easier areas to shed weight before you begin to nit-pick the few pounds here and there.

Thats what I am saying. I agree that it is a good idea if you have some good power to drop to the wheels, but there are alot of other things to do to shed weight before you go cutting out the tire well just to save 5lbs probably.

ya it was just an idea! i pretty much have my car gutted, i have to wait till the end of winter to finish "got to save some heat". i was going to cut it out and rivit a pice of sheet metal in, i am still tryin to decide if i still really want to build up my gs! i am leening twards yes build it, but then i see a gs-t and ya sweet!
but it's something i have to decide on! befor i go hacking up my car!

2 things stop eating fast food and there is your 5 pounds and you still have a trunk.

get a carbon-fiber hatch with a lexan window 20+ pounds less, with the lexan it looks cool and you still have a trunk.

im doing the same thing make it a sub box

I've taken my spare tire out also, and in the future have the brackets etc. for the spare tire cut out.

There's vibration from exhaust and radio.

Remove exist weight can help save abit on gas, and going head to head.

I've read from a post someone wrote, he had his cut out by a welder?

if you really want that kind of weight savings, lose 5Lb yourself, ynless you're a skinny bastard then I wouldn't worry about it
