96229, Best spray paint for engine bay Posted by eclipseman1999, Aug-24-06 10:55 AM
I plan on painting my car white and was wondering what the best spray paint brand/type would be to use that wont chip or fade easy. I dont want to pull the engine so I just want to spray the parts you can see like shock toweres and radiator support before I take it to the paint shop.

Use the Hight temp Engine paint from dupont for $6 bucks at advance.
If you notice on my dsm the side markers,fog-light trim, and the curve inserts on the lower front bumper. Where painted a bright white by using this High Temp paint it gives a flat thick primer look. Later, I'm gonna put a white semi gloss base coat to match rest of my car. Doesn't look bad, only took an hour or so for the paint to dry.
Here's a closer up view my DSM so you could see :cheers :puke excuse me lol.. practing for 07' shootout. I can't hold my beer

you can use regular duplicolor paint that matches . it wont chip as long as you scuff the old paint good .

I would recommend and use the engine High temp piant due to massive heat the 420a's give off.
They come in all colors, and you don't glossy fin. to me that's for the body just my $0.02.

Shawn, I used Rustoleum to paint the bay in Daisy. Flat black Rustoleum. I think it turned out well. I didn't do a great deal of prep, either. I just sprayed the bay down a section at a time with Easy Off oven cleaner (will etch anodized pieces, btw), gave it a quick scrub with a $1 scrub brush from the dollar store, and rinsed it with a garden hose. Once it had air dried, I sprayed it all down, top to bottom, with brake parts cleaner. Then I just went at it with the Rustoleum. I didn't put on many coats, so I have developed some chips here and there. It has held up pretty good, though.

Now, I used the high temp stuff on my block and head, but the problem with that is - brake parts cleaner will dissolve it. I have to use good, old fashioned soap and water to clean my engine now, or it will look like it has Leprosy. Bummer.
The VHT wheel stuff is likely the best. You sure they don't have it in white? White is a popular color for wheels these days...

I doubt you will find white but i use VHT caliper paint. It has proven to be much more scratch resistant and weather proof than engine high temp enamel. I have tried both as far as my calipers go.
As stated above you can use automotive paint, just be sure to use a coat of clear to protect it. It will be soft for about 90days until it cures.

On VHT's website they dont make white caliper paint but they do make white engine enamel and white wheel paint. Which do you think would work better for the engine bay?

I'd go with the wheel paint, Shawn.
So are you gonna keep the car, then? I notice you have it for sale in 4G63 forum... :wary

Yeah I decided to keep it. I might just go with the vht black caliper paint they way if there is any overspray it wont look as bad a white. Im going to paint the tsi white because its the stock blue and is in bad condition. When Im all done on it Ill have to meet up with az2ngt again and show all of you.
