Will they fit in a n/t. I searched and couldn't find any info on it. I currently have avenger v6 oem gauge cluster in my car (with the rpm and speedo from my car because they are higher). Fit in perfect, and to my surprise the oil gauge works. Not as responsive as it does in the Avenger but it works none the less. I am asking this because I am getting a bunch of free stuff off of a 96 GST. I thought I would have to pay but to my surprise the kid is giving me the weather stripping, stock rims (my tires went flat on my enkei and I am running stocks w/o the hub caps, my bro lost one), and the gauges. The rest of the car is striped so far down I don’t think it even has the stock fuel pump. Well any info on the matter would be cool.

peace.

Sorry if posted in the wrong section and if anyone is thinking about asking...obviously the boost gauge wouldn't work. Hoping the rest would though.

If it's free, give it a shot and let us know. If nothing else, you'll have all the spare bulbs you'll ever need and needles to boot!

have them in mine and yes they will work. I have a 97 RS and the gauges are out of a 98 GSX so i dont see why it wouldn't work with yours.

Awsome, thanks guys...I wonder why mitsu left out the oil presure gauge on the n/a...

How is the boost gauge going to work from a GSx in a non turbo?

it doesnt but the rest of the gauges do, i just liked the look better than the simpleness of the RS cluster so i swapped i'll get pics soon

Take a pic of it in action.. Cuz theoretically 1/2 the gauges shouldn't even be registering... Boost etc.

I'm baffled...

If you only had an N/T oil pressure idiot light before, how could you now have an oil pressure gauge that is working by only changing the cluster Or did you install a new oil pressure sending unit? N/Ts only come with a sending switch that provides a ground path to the idiot light when oil pressure is low. Turbos come with a sending unit that provides a variable signal based on rising and falling pressures. According to the wire diagrams they don't use the same pin-out on the gauge cluster either.

I'm curious because I'm doing some custom gauge installation as well. I'm trying to optimize the factory options avaible from the GSTs and the Avengers.

I really don’t know why or how it works. But it does. I will post pics soon if you like of idle/driving. There is a difference and if it shouldn't work the needle should be just stuck on the bottom.

Please do.

For the life of me I can't figure out how your oil pressure gauge is getting a signal to read if you don't have a oil pressure sending unit. I don't see any other way to get a signal to the gauge in order to obtain a meaningful reading.

Are you sure you have a stock oil pressure switch installed or did someone maybe install an oil pressure sending unit instead?

Still curious...

Thanks

possible that the "dummy" light produces enough to move the guage around? Not sure how accurate it would be but it's possible i guess

Well I can tell you one thing. For some reason my oil keeps disappearing after my last oil change (hope its nothing serious). The reasons I caught the disappearing oil is that oil pressure gauge is normally about even with my temp if I am doing normal driving and for the past few weeks its starting to sit lower and lower. And no my oil light comes on when I am at low rpms going around curves in gear.

Not to sound like I know what’s going on or not but, is it possible that there is some kind of stock sensor that only sends a signal to the ecu to tell it when the pressure is low and then throw a light. That’s all that I can think of.

Many people have owned this car before me so it could be possible I guess that someone put some kind of sensor in. But I have had this avenger gauge in for 5+ months now (25$ at junk yard) and its always sat at the same spot when I am driving, and drops when I go low rpm's or am driving at lower speeds. I did compare how the gauge was reading to a 98 avenger my xgf had and they seemed to be very close readings, just mine was a little slower to respond. If I can get some video of it, if not just pics.

It is kind of strange that no one has posted about this before. If it gives true readings this would be an awesome cheep oil pressure mod for a n/t.

It's just not possible.

Unless:

A.) someone put in an aftermarket pressure sender and it just happens to be in the same output range as the stock gauge cluster.

or

B.) The gauge is merely responding to a little voltage variance on whatever wire it is connected to in the cluster or harness and is responding to voltage variances from revving the engine or idleing/ driving conditions.
The voltage on a car can vary greatly depending on how fast the alternator is spinning/ load on the electrical system.

well that would be cool if someone put a pressure sender in my car. And I know it shouldn't work. I will post pics tomorrow after my oil change.

peace

I know this may cost you about $40 and some time, but you should buy an aftermarket gauge and sender, T off of what you have, and see if it reads correctly. Also take pics of the oil pressure sensor you have back there now.

That looks more like a non turbo cluster and the previous owner retrofitted the oil pressure gauge. A 2g turbo cluster would also have a boost gauge.

Here is some more info I gathered...

As you are looking at the back of the cluster, connector C-04 is on your right and pin #47 is the connection to the oil pressure switch (see photo). This is the wire that leads to the oil pressure switch and is looking for a ground condition when oil pressure fails.

Pin #41 is for the oil pressure sending unit. On the RS instument cluster you will see it is not even connected to the flexible traces even though there is a wire in the C-04 connector that could match up to it.

If you look at the back of the Avenger 420A cluster you will see that pin #41 is connected to the oil pressure gauge. It is possible that a previous owner of your vehicle made the further connection below the dash and installed a sending unit. More than likely it would be "T"d at the oil pressure switch. Have you been under the car to look for that?

Happily it looks like it would be a little easier for me to do this same upgrade while updating the rest of my instruments.

Please note that if you are following the factory wiring schematics, the pin numbering on the flexible circuitboard on all of the clusters is NOT correct.

Sitting in the car this connector is on the far left as you view where the cluster used to be installed. Note that there is a wire installed in position #41 even though it connects to a blank spot on the RS cluster circuitboard. This gives me hope to find that wire under the dash and route it to a sending unit that I will "T" off the existing sending switch. This would allow me to use the Avenbger cluster in my car, after a few other mods, and then I would have an oil pressure gauge in a factory position like the OP has (I hope).

This is the back of an RS cluster (manual) and shows that Pin #41 does not connect to anything.

This is the back of an Avenger cluster and shows that Pin #41 has continuity to the oil pressure gauge, which is the silver screw shown in the lower right corner of the photo.

Ah so the avengers had an oil pressure gauge factory? All you would need dave is to acquire thier sensor and retro fit it.

That's my plan. I can get a new oil pressure sender at Autozone.

However, since the circuit board area behind the combo oil pressure and water temp gauge is completely different on the Avenger, as compared to the RS, I'll likely transfer the tach and speedo from my RS (manual) into the Avenger (auto) clusters I have.

Curious...did Avengers come with 5-speeds? Haven't seen any clusters with the 9000 RPM tach versus the 8000 RPM like on the RS manual/5-speed differences. Maybe I just haven't seen one yet. Either way, I think I have the parts to get me where I'm going (and I'll probably take pictures).

I've done some more work on the factory oil pressure gauge install experiment and I'm less enthusiastic about it now. Until I actually took the gauge out of the cluster to examine it I couldn't tell that it is a simple bi-metal type of gauge design. Here is how it works and you’ll soon see that it is very slow to react to changes in oil pressure.

This type of gauge operates by heating a small coil of Nicrome wire (or similar resistance wire) that is wrapped around a thin strip of bi-metal material. That thin strip of material flexes as it gets hot, thus driving the needle through a simple gear mechanism. The more current that flows through the Nicrome, wire the higher the needle moves.

The oil pressure sending unit (mounted on the motor block) is a mechanical potentiometer that converts a rising and falling pressure reading into an inverted resistance reading. As the pressure goes up, the resistance goes down. Therefore, as the oil pressure rises the resistance goes down, the current through the Nicrome wire coil increases and the needle moves higher.

This type of gauge is slow by design. It may take as long as 15-20 seconds for the needle to show the correct pressure as the bi-metal strip has to have time to heat up and cool down.

In my opinion, any oil pressure reading is better than an idiot light but the slow reaction time of the factory gauge may not be what many of you are looking for. I will probably go ahead and install the gauge since I have it in place but I may eventually add an aftermarket gauge elsewhere.

Guys I installed that Avenger gauge myself. I went to the junkyard found a 98 Avenger V6 bought the gauge cluster for 25$ (freaking cheep). Took out the speed and rpm gauges from my original gauges and put them in the Avenger unit. Then Plugged them right in. Just wanted to clear up the fact that the car didn't come with them in. I installed them, just to see if it would work. And other people that have 2gnt see my gauge and go what the? And I have to explain what I did to get them that way. The Turbo gauge cluster should be mine with in the next few weeks...if the guy calls me back about it EVER!

all the gauges work in the oem turbo gauges in mine except the bottom right (oil pres/boost)

Awesome to hear, I get to go pick mine up today! The kid that was giving me the stuff of his 95 GST says that I can just go and take what I want from the car, Except for the wheels got to wait till he gets it towed to a junkyard for them. I am now really tempted to try and remove the dash in his car too because mine is all pealing up from the frame. But good to hear I will also post a pic of mine when I get them installed.

Awakening a dead thread. Haha!

Yes i know i have woke up a dead thread. But i figured it is better than starting a new thread, right?

So from my last thread that i started, you can imagine i am in the process of sprucing up my interior with factory oem gauges and switches and such. i have already got all of the switches (even knowing that some just will not work at all no matter what i do). But what can i say, i hate blank faceplates.
READ MORE of the above at... http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=7&topic_id=104738&mode=full

But now that i have all of those other switches installed (not all completely wired up yet though)... i was thinking about this today. Could i toss a gsx, gst/tsi gauge cluster in my RS? Reading this post (the only thread i could find that had any relevance to the question).

i already have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge so the stock turbo oil pressure gauge is useless to me anyway, not to mention it is inaccurate and even the turbo guys switch out to aftermarket. But even with that being said... will the pins line up to allow it to work at all? (most the pics in this thread are invalid now). i know it will be inaccurate but that doesn't matter for my goal. (before it is asked... YES i do have an aftermarket gauge and sending unit already)

And is there a way to get the oem boost gauge to work? i mean, doesn't it just read the manifold pressure anyway? i know it will be inaccurate as well as the turbo guys also rely on an aftermarket boost gauge. But my GlowShift gauges all work (oil pressure, boost, narrowband o2). Shouldn't the stock boost be able to be read? if not it doesn't matter at all. Just wanted to ask.

And will it read proper coolant temperature? because the coolant gauge is on the other side near the gas gauge (i believe), so will that mess anything up?

Or will everything work fine except the boost and possibly the oil pressure?
