Here’s a request to those who have customized their gauge clusters or are familiar with other Mitsubishi or Chrysler models besides the Eclipse.

Here is what I am up to. Where possible, I am integrating many indicator lights, currently located around the dash area in assorted places, into the interior of the factory gauge cluster. Many off the idiot light sockets in the RS and GS gauge panels are not used and I will be custom printing symbols to make use of those open slots. I’m also integrating a 22 LED display across the top of the cluster to mimic my LED taillights in the rear.

I have several 420A MTX clusters and can quickly identify them since the tachometer scale reads up to 9000 RPM as opposed to the 420A ATX cluster scale that stops at 8000 RPM. The ATX cluster also has a small overdrive indicator light left of the trip odometer reset button.

I have never seen an ATX Eclipse cluster that has the PRND12 lights installed vertically between the tach and speedo even though it appears the slots were originally designed into the gauge. It appears the light boxes were designed to be created in the cluster by adding a small section of plastic dividers into the slotted areas around the holes for the lights. The gauge bezels even have an indented oval in that area as if it was an option in some years or models. I am trying to find out if there is another Mitsubishi or Chrysler car that made use of that feature so I can steal parts from it for my project. I have checked the Sebring and Avenger clusters on Ebay and so far I have not seen another cluster using those positions.

I’ve found gauge bezel overlays (for dressing up the clusters) on ebay for ATX and MTX Eclipses and the ATX ones have those slots cut out as if they expected them to be in use.



Here is the area I'm interested in. Places for 6 bulbs PRND21. You can see it was designed to have a divider assembly snapped into place.



Here you see the same area and below it is the bulb for the "overdrive off" indicator.



Circled in white you can see that the copper traces are in place to make use of the two bulbs below the OD Off indicator by simply punching out the Mylar film covering the holes. Circled in black you can see the holes for the PRND21 bulbs do not have any traces run to them. Was this feature totally abandoned or was it used in other models or non-North America models possibly?

what do the autos use as a gear indicator then? i was under the impression that the vertical indciator was used in the autos...

The ATX 2Gs have the display next to the shift selector on the console.

oh right... hmmm the avengers maybe? i know they use the same cluster... i think they have indicators next to the shifter as well though. i could've sworn i've seen pics with those lit up somewhere.

the cluster in my car now is out of a 99 gsx that was loaded, and those lights are still empty, no clue what they are for

lol the light at the bottom's on. it's from an avenger. or is that the OD light? lol i'll go look for a better pic

Dave if you have any idea's on reprinting transparent labels i could sue some for mine. I have done something similer already but the labels i have not been able to find yet. I am to the point i am ready to use a label maker and exacto knife.

That does look like an Avenger cluster based on the combo fuel level/oil pressure dial in the lower left corner. Yes, that light at the bottom of the red circled area is the overdrive lockout indicator found on ATX clusters.

I plan to print black text or logos on 1 mil clear adhesive Tedlar film. I have a thermal transfer printer that will do nicely. The various colors would have to come from the overlay film. PM me a mailing address for a sample.
