well, i have wanted to further add some contrast to my interior, being as the entire thing comes awash in grey from the factory. i highlighted the interior with a bit of silver..but it wasnt enough. therefore, i decided to swap most of my carpeting to black...and someday the seating, as well as the headliner. anyways, i had tried once before to dye an extra stock carpet with a combination of RIT powdered dye (mix) and some other brand of aresol dye (not duplicolor). well it was a flop..the stuff rubbed off and never stuck...i never even got it in the car. after 2 weeks of drying, it still didnt work. so for anyone reading/searching..dont use that way.

so today, i got up the nerve to try it on my ONLY carpet. i picked up 2 cans of duplicolor vinyl and carpet dye in the flat black. i got mine at wally world..but im sure it can be had at several diff places. application was straightfoward. i removed the carpet from the car, and vaccumed. then just sprayed away. it was dry in a few minutes..and it didnt rub off! i also did the carpet inserts in the door panels. it took both cans..putting 2 thick layers on the carpet and 2 layers on the door panel inserts. i think ill pick up a 3rd can to do the rear hatch cover and the cargo carpet. it dosent rub..it thoroughly coats and soaks into the carpet, and it dosent "crunch" at all. it feels just exactly like it did before the change.

its dark out now..so no pix as of yet. ill have some up tomorrow for those interested in it. for those wanting to get rid of some of that grey..or those with the 97-99's with the half black interior, here is a good way to complete the look.

If I'm not too lazy, I'll be doing this to my carpet... did I mention I was lazy?

I bet it looks sick inside your car, can't wait for pics!

I did mine like that and for a while it didn't rub off and then after a few months it did, but not bad only main part is where girls dig their damn high heels into the carped and from my heel under the pedal, the rest looks pretty good still.

thats why you use floor mats anyways lol. right now my grey ones are in..but ill soon be purchasing some black ones. not only does it save the coloring..but the entire carpet. better to dirty up a floor mat than your carpet...much easier to maintain.

koji, it took me like...5 min to get the carpet out..and the stuff dried pretty fast, and the reinstall took a bit longer (probably 15 minnutes) due to having to remove some panels to get the carpet to fit just right. just yank out the carpet, throw on a coat...go have some lunch, throw on another coat...go browse the net for a bit, then reinstall. and it deffinatley looks good...i esp like the door panels inserts!

I only have one floor mat, passenger side. My gas pedal kept getting stuck at WOT with that carpet.

I'm thinking about doing this some day. Some day all of my carpet will match and hopefully the paint will get rid of the smoke smell in the car.... well, it smells like Cheerios to me.

You can easily pick up some bottles of Rit Dye and a big trash can and dye it twice.

This cost me less than 20 dollars and I don't have any odor nor do I have to worry about it coming out.

I predict it will hold up awhile and then look like crap.

i did it to my hatch cover and cargo carpet, the hatch cover looks real nice, but with stuff in my trunk, it just started to come off of the cargo carpet, so if your gonna do it take your time and possibly use a brush to get down in there and I would also use more than 2 coats

how about you read the ENTIRE thread before you go making an asshat of yourself eh? read "i tried using RIT dye before..."

and how rediclous is using dye in a can..made SPECIFICALLY for carpet and vinyl for AUTOMOTIVE USE?! if i had gotten a can of rust-oleum and hosed it down sure...but when your knockin on a product designed for carpeting applications..you make yourself look just silly.

and my stocker trunk carpet is gone...i got some better that is more like the stuff up front. im not surised it didnt hold to that OEM peice...its more like a bedsheet glued to a rubber matt

No, you used a combination of Rit "powder" and some other crap. I read.

Many people (more than Duplicolor sprayers) have done it this way. There is no reason to completely rule out this method.

Just because something did not work for you does not mean it can not work for others.

I actually use Duplicolor for many things. I am not knocking the product. If it works for you, cheers.

All I have a problem with is telling other members the Rit dye method is ineffective because you did it improperly.

You need more than 5 bottles and a big container, such as a trash can. You will also need to double or triple dye it to get it dark enough.

You're right. The way I went about it was wrong.

Additionally, 1/2 bottle of Rit is equivalent to 1 packet of powder. So, you may have had a weak mixture.

I'm not here to argue. I just didn't want people to think the Rit way was ineffective.

its all good myth, just got a bit hot-headed is all.

as i think back on it...i didnt RIT dye mine like yours. the instructions on the packet never said anything about dipping or anything like you mentioned. it said to mix up a solution in a spray bottle and work it into the carpet with a brush. which i did. i mean..it dyed it really well right off. then it said to rinse the carpet out..but it kept on commin out, and commin out. and i let it dry..and it came off all over my hands, and i rinsed some more. before i knew it..it was just a splotchy grey again! so im sure dying like you did would be much more effective. but i didnt know that method..and i didnt really have anything big enough. so met me change my wording a bit. "if your lookin to use RIT dye..dont do like i did and try to spray/drench it on and work it in with a brush. the above poster has had sucess with double or triple soaking the carpet in a vat of some sort."

the pix will have to be up tomorrow. i decided to dye my headliner for the time being..and i got a late start. im actually drivin to class with no back seat or back panels ahahah. ill be redoing the headliner with true black material..this is just temp to kinda see how everything is workin together. but i must say...im VERY happy with all my results. i promise pix tomorrow. i woulda got them today but i wanted to show off the headliner as well.

btw..anyone nkow what to do about the "oh shit" handle? its so flexy i dont see how anything would ever hold to it. its gonna look like ass being the only whiteish-beige thing in the interior. and there are 2 big holes where it would go if i just left if off. any ideas?

edit: make that 1 hole. when i redo the liner with material..i wont have that cut out...but what to do about the pillar? finding paint would be so hard if i tried to fill it

Actually for the handle and the trim, I threw them both in the Rit bath not expecting to see any results.

The trim (that goes around the inside when you open the doors) got black whereas the handle didn't work too well. Although, I can't really recall.

I've got them sitting somewhere come to think of it, and haven't looked for them in months. :\

I'll see if I can find them.

im trying to think of a way to shave the hole in the pillar...because i kinda like the look w/o the handle there.

ok, a little belated due to being a bit busy..but here they are. as you can see, the inserts, carpet, headliner, visors..and all appropriate peices have been blacked out. the lighting conditions were less than optimal for shooting the headliner..but to be honest..it is as dark as in the photographs. VERY dark. i dyed it 2x over. any splotchiness is strictly due to the camera. it is currently 20* outside and snowing. so keeping the lense clean and free of flare as well as fog was a bit of an issue. everything is completley smooth and even.

Taint bad.

If your dash was black it would look even better.

I used the same stuff to dye my carpet last year and I still havent had any fading or anything, not even where my feet rub (possibly because I used 9 cans of spray too, lol, i did about 6 coats on my carpet, just to make sure it would hold up good.

silver was done with duplicolor high engine silver paint (alum). the ceramics add a bit of shine to it. then just cleared it with ext clear.

more than likley, the dash, panels, and doors will stay grey. the seats will be swaped out eventually for black/grey aftermarkets. the back seats..ill probably do neoprenes or something.

in all honesty, i am not willing to dye my dash board and door skins. i have heard too many horror stories. the only way id go all black is to get a full black interior out of another car. unfortunatley...black leather door panels are a BITCH to find..and rather pricey. and imo a black dash with the rest of the panels being grey..would not flow. so due to money, time, and availability..im sure the rest will be staying grey. and to be honest..if i start going all black..it will deviate from what im wanting. i personally dont like a car with too much of one color. after seats, rear hatch carpet, and recovering my cargo cover..i think the interior color changes to my car will end.

but thanks for the compliments guys. after getting rid of that odd ass colored headliner that dosent flow with anything (wtf was mitsu thinkin?) and goin black on the floors and door panel inserts...i have fallen in love with my interior all over again. the sea of grey has begun to subside!

Yeah, I think I'm going to be painting all of the same interior pieces that you did, but with a gloss black. I'll dye the door inserts black as well, redue the headliner with black headlining since mine is falling apart and one day, finish up the carpet with black dye.

Exactly what I did. It looks amazingly stock imo.
