91414, looking for body kit/conversion help
Posted by DSMTalon, Dec-20-05 05:00 PM
allright heres the scoop...i got a 96 talon, and it was nailed
about 5 months ago in the rear...not much damage...but enough
to scare me..two months later it was nailed in the passenger
fender. well as it is, not being happy having my name on the
back of my car( Talon is my name...scary) i want to do the
Eclipse conversion, and at the same time put a body kit on it
as it would be cheaper than buying stock parts.. I read the
info on the tail end conversion on the tech page.. but im
wondering about the dimensions of those L brackets.. if
anybody has those specs id be helpful. The other question is
on a body kit.. im looking at either an invader kit or one of
those VIS GT-Bomber kits.. so im wondering if anybody has
experience with VIS kits if they fit worth a damn... and more
importantly if anybody has had luck with ebay kits.. i know
most dont, but the seller says the kit is an authentic VIS
kit...dunno some advice would be much appreciated.. TIA

also a quick note... id appreciate some info on wiring up some
projectors for the halo rings...(yeah yeah yeah i get it
RICE!) do you just tap into the marker light wiring?

Will if you buy projectors headlights buy the ones with the
halo rings. Then just plug the headlights in and your done. If
you buy a kit on ebay you will need to do alot work on fixing
the little cracks and othere things in the fiberglass.

Please, take my advice, dont by the projectors, they suck for vision and they are NOT "plug and play". I've been through so many different body kits and lights through the years and now all i want is a turboed, lowered, stock 97-99 look. Basically how it was before i spent thousands of dollars. You should just lower it, put some nice 18" rims, turbo it, and do the 97-99 eclipse conversion with OEM headlights. And maybe some nice paint and interior work. TRUST ME. If you dont like my advice then...Buy my car! :thumbsup

Any body kit will require some fabrication. Some less than others, and some more than others. Like CustomGS said, just get some 2GB Eclipse stuff to put on your car. Then you won't have to worry about fitment. Here's some pics of my favorite Talon converted to an Eclipse.

While the fit may not be perfect, a VIS kit is always going to fit better and have a better/stronger construction than a generic $75 eBay kit. If the seller claims it to be authentic VIS ask him to take a pic of the VIS tag they put on all thier products, if he's a straight up guy it shouldn't be a problem. The halo projectors on eBay made by Sonar can be plug and play as claimed, but as azdave taught me you have to cut the harness out of your stock headlights. Of course I learned of this after butchering my stock wiring lol. The Sonar projectors are also notorious for having thier LEDs fail in a very short amount of time, one of mine lasted only about 6 hours and it's a bit of a chore to replace them. The other brand of halos on eBay, the ones that aren't hollow with chrome rings seem to be better made and are true plug and play without extra wiring. Here's a couple write ups on making your own halos if you're interested in going that route

i got the sonar headlights . you do got to cut the harness out but thats pretty simple. the thing i hate about them is the halos . ilove the way the halos look but they dont last. i replaced the leds 3 times already .they last about a week at most . i would say get stock 97-99 headlights and retro fit them .

man you know there is some clean rides on here... as far as that kit goes i will ask him about the VIS label. But i guess im gonna be one off on here. Like i mentioned before my Talon is currently all beat up...well the damage isnt bad at all..but i like the phrase anyway. But since ive decided on a color for it (PPG Electric Green) Im gonna paint it and put the kit on it and what not. As soon as i get it done ill post up some pics.. but its gonna look funny cuz of the poverty caps i got on there. But ill probably pick up some MSR Alloys 5 spokers in 17's(70$ a piece Brand new) As far as the projectors go im not sure how theyre wired in...havent got them yet.. but IF i have to go hacking up the harness then ill just wire them up on a toggle inside or something.

If you got the Sonar brand lights and are unsure of how to wire them azdave's write up is a life saver

I bought my kit at http://www.importfan.com and the fitment on the bumpers was perfect. No modification needed and I had it mounted within a day. I had the side skirst professionally installed.

Just remember...if you lower your car and put a kit on it, it's going to be a bitch to drive especially if it's a daily driver. I put the Tein lowering Springs on my ride and the EVO5 type front and scrubbed regularly. I'm looking for an air ride now cause this just ain't working and I love the lowered kit look.
