Finally got mine replaced after propping up the hatch with the rear shelf for years. So nice to watch it lift itself to the top. If your hatch doesn't stay up on it's own I highly recommend spending the 60 bucks...worth it imo.

I'm sure there's a few cheaper places to get replacements, but I questioned their quality compared to the factory set. I put Mopars on in -4 degree weather and they work awesome.

that's where i got mine and they've been great. it's one've those little repairs that you don't really notice but makes a huge difference. these are OEM btw - not aftermarket. i haven't put my commando wing on yet but it feels like there would be no difficulty in supporting the additional weight. i know some people have had problems with their hatches staying open after adding an aftermarket wing.

ordered mine through the dealer today $21 each but i work at an interior shop, im not sure if that was with our discount or not, called advanced auto they wanted $35

Yea i was the same. Got a new pair through napa for 60. Now the thing lifts by itself, its great.

I have to do that sometimes... when I remember, the other times when it's cold out and I forget I get a nice headache.

what's wierd is when I had my stock "spoiler" off to paint my car the hatch would raise itself, but won't with it on there... I'm wondering if I should be looking for these soon or not.

Until you can afford new gas struts for the hatch at least use a little classier way to hold open the hatch than a wooden stick. A stick can get knocked out of place by you or a wind gust and then there goes your headache again.

I used this on mine until I got new struts. You don't have to do both sides. You only need a single little worm gear hose clamp on the left or right strut rod and a dime or a nutdriver to tighten and loosen it.

I just kept a cheap 1/4" nutdriver in the trunk to tighten and loosen the clamp. Don't worry about scratching the polished rod since the strut is bad anyway. When loosened the clamp can simply slide down rod and sit harmlessly out of the way.

A 3/4" wood dowel from HomeDepot for like $1.49 works fine for me. Just bevel it a bit at the the hatch end, and it stays pretty securely.

My head is too expensive now to use for things like propping up the hatch...

I want to jump in on the action. For my 1g I bough a set from auto zone like 6 years ago or so and they were complete crap. So for now I will not get enyhting other than OEM.

I have a similar approach to AZ daves except you don't need to use screw driver to tighten any thing. If you have it use wise grip. Do this only if your hatch struts are totaly shut cuz the wise grip will scratch the piston. If your hatch doesn't stay up just cuz it's cold and works fine during regular temeratures dont use my method it will kill your supports.

I know spark plugs are not a mod but the car runs so smooth now.

I bought some strong arm ones from ebay, came with hardware and instructions. Only spent about $85 on them. Before you used to have to hold it up for about 10 seconds before it would stay and it would not always stay.

Even with just one new one the hatch could open istself. With both it was even better. It is so nice. Definately recommend.

almost all the "blown ones" ive seen Are just worn or dired seals. Pushing or pulling on just one with my pinkie and they hold. So I Put a string across from one to the other, lift pull string it holds, release quick release...goes down gently. I thought about doing something to the shaft to help it seal...

The ones In my car are still good though...
