88167, CARBON FIBER HOODS !!!! USE PINS !!!!!
Posted by willy, Aug-17-05 03:28 PM
I have only had my car on the road for 2 weeks ie; new paint, wheels, engine, nitrous, body kit, carbon fiber hood and all that shit. so its pretty nice ride right. well i have noticed that the hood noticably flexes up and down after 50 mph. I thought it was odd but i thought it was normal though. So i am going down the highway and blow by these little dorks in a convertible Lebaron and i seen them all checking it out. When out of nowhere my hood flys up and smashes the shit out of my windsheild. The highway was pretty busy but i managed to somehow get it in the slow lane and on to the shoulder where i slammed on the brakes to get it to go back down. I drive it on the shoulder to the exit ramp and get out to check it out. Come to find out the locking mechanism is still latched but the latch that bolts to the hood ripped right out of the fiberglass and 2 bolts stripped right out. Gladly enough i decided to put full coverage on it because i only have to pay 60 bucks to get it fixed. I called ERACINGS now called OUTLOOK CONCEPTS and they pretty much told me that you must use hood pins. So put them on if you dont already have them on there. The hood is destroyed, i have dents on the roof of the car and the moonroof frame is bent. I will put some pictures of it on my photobucket. Also i wanted to kill those fags in the lebaron as they passed me with my hood up going down the highway.

You have to use pins with all cf hoods really.

no offense, but i would have laughed too if i seen you fly pass me and then see your hood fly up, lol.

this hap'd to me once tho, i didnt use hood pins, hit a bump on highway at like 70mph, and it flew up.

FYI too, insurance prolly wont cover the whole hood since its aftermarket. atleast thats what my insurance company told me (allstate).

My VIS invader cf hood was perfectly stable deep into fifth gear boosting 18psi (no speedo so not sure of speed)with no hoodpins. Also, back when I had a speedo I had been 130mph several times with absolutely no problems... I think its all in the quality of the hood

Agreed^^^^^^ I have had my VIS Evo hood for a about 2 years now and drive the shit out of my car, never once have I had a problem. Although, I did forget to close it all the way when I was driving around town for about an hour one time, and it still never flew open. I like VIS hoods. Here's a link to some nice real carbon fiber pins for hoods on Egay, I was thinking of getting some. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-CARBON-FIBER-HOOD-LOCK-PIN-PINS-WITH-KEYS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33646QQitemZ7993937789QQrdZ1

False. The hood that DID fly up one me was a VIS Oem Style, same hood I have now. The latch just broke off of it. Maybe a bad batch of fiberglass around the latch, who knows what those people do.

Cuz a lot of us are afraid to drill through a $3-600 hood. Thats why I never did it on my first hood.

hoods with vents will not fly up like OEM style hoods. OEM hoods will have a high pressure zone underneath the hood with a low pressure one outside of it, and we should all know by now that high pressure air wants to move into a low pressure area, so your OEM hood is going to be pushing upwards a lot. as soon as something happens to give it the extra little bump, it is going to fly up and wreck everything. vented hoods, like the invader and Evo hoods, do not have such a serious build-up of pressure under them and will not fly up like the OEM style hoods.

Yeah, So when you get sued for hurting or killing somebody and your insurance company covers you ass, free legal representation as well, i'm sure youll hate them then too?? why WOULD an insurance company pay for something that was your own moronic mistake?(And in most cases they do anyway) Like an aftermarket hood flying up? The statements people make sometimes when it comes to insurance amaze me.

the thing that burns my ass though is that i called the company and he pretty much said that it says in the instructions to use pins. If i pay 400.00 for a hood that needs to be pinned down then why werent there any holes for pins or why couldnt the toss in some 5.00 pins with it. Oh well i guess its my fault. They wont even cut me a deal with a new hood.

What's to say that pins would fit where the holes were? maybe there were inter-year changes to the rad supports or underhood construction that would make them not fit in some spots. plus, some people might want them close together, or far apart, etc.
and it does say almost everywhere I've ever seen a CF hood for sale, to use hood pins.

well i must have missed that part in the hood installation manual. I honestly had no idea. I thought that since it came with a latch it was safe to use it. I didnt know that the latch would rip right through my 400 dollar hood. Just thought i was paying for a bit more quality than that, thats all

Very understandable. I'm sure your not the first, dont worry about. Take it as a lesson learned the hard way. Dont beat yourself up about it. :D

I just bought some brand new hood pins from ramchargers.com for $27.99, they are the ones with the round plate and the torsion pin that has a plastic wrapped cable. I decided not to go carbon fiber and just leave it stock so if any of you want these ill take $20 shipped. They are polished, almost chrome looking (if not chrome).

Item number: 52039020

It says $22.99 but after shipping it cost me $28.

I'm sure your not the first,

2GNTsearch("hood pins") returns 330 others who came before. ;)

Pin those bitches. You drive a CF hood without them (especially a stock style - the sweetest of them all), you take your chances. I did 120mph across the desert to LA with a non-pinned OEM style CF hood that I hadn't event tightened the hinge bolts on and it was flopping all over the place. Nobody at MOD bought it, so it came back to Phoenix and went back in the box. I love my heavy-ass, white hood. :thumbsup

(Although, my inner ricer thought it was pretty bad ass...) :shrug

It's right after the part that says "For offroad use only". Most, if not all, aftermarket parts of any kind depend on the buyer to both A. Assume all risk of using said product and B. Take every necessary precaution when installing and using said product.

Nice picture! thats what mine looked like except where the super high performance Bump on the drivers side of the hood, caved in right in front of me. It was cracked like that but it spidered the whole thing and damn near came through it. I just got it back from the shop today and it cost 1800 to fix the roof, moonroof, paint, hood. Pretty nice hood though, it is a VIS Type JS. I have never seen one before. It is nice. And thank god the insurance covered it. Not sure if the agent knew it was a CF hood. Probably wouldnt have paid for it if they knew it was aftermarket.
