well i got all done with my timing belt, head gasket project and the car is running strong and now today i go to open my pass door and nothing and the doorhandle stayed in the up position, ive read several posts on these crappy doorhandles, geez did mitsubishi make a single part on this car thats durable?? my door handle didnt physically break off and i didnt hear no crack or anything, i took the door skin off and peeled back the fruit roll up they have pasted to the inside and i looked at the mechanism, i didnt see anything that looked broken and i lifted the door handle and pushed it back down and nothing??? the inside works but the outside doesnt push the bar down enough to pop the lock, i read something on the bar bending and needing to be bent back but for the life of me i could not find a way to get to it without removing the window?? can someone point me in the right direction i have power windows if that matters oh and if i lift the handle up it stays up and i have to push it back down, think maybe a spring or something poped but either way the door wont open, might just decide to shave and get some popers but we'll see

They're a Son of a Bitch to get to. lol. Mine did the same thing. I just had my paint guy spray it and then had satan put it in because i didnt feel like dealing with it.

Yeah, Mine did the same thing yours is doing. But then it broke completely off after messing with it. You could probably fix yours without having to replace it. I had a carshow two days after i broke it and couldnt wait to get it shipped so i went to the local satan and payed $60 for the handle and $95 to put it in after my guy painted it. pain in the ass..

they are a Pain in the ass if you've never done it before. Share with us your method and what tools you used to get to them. Did you take your windows out?

please do share your method, and is your power windows? even if i take the window out i still gotta deal with all that tar crap getting everywhere. if you can post an easy way it would def be worth points to me.

The biggest problem is moving your hand around in there. If you have somewhat big hands your basically up shits creek without a paddle because I can't say how many times I cursed at the car for being so tuff to work on.

I used a fix that I found on here...

but basically all I did was take off my door panel and peeled back the plastic and tar...

two bolts and two rods are attached to the actual door handle

its just a lot of squeezing

I just replaced my drivers door handle, I got it all together, close the door and it wouldnt open, so i took it apart again, and there is a space in the bottom, so i put a wedge in it, and secured it, I close the door it works < the rod wasnt all the way in the hole> So this time i snap it into the hole, close door and it wont open, :/ What should I do, tinker with it more which is a biznitch or take it to a shop ?

Alright.. i just did a door handle swap.. about 2 hours ago.

Theres two bolts holding the door handle on. Ill get pictures tomorrow of there location if you would like.

Theres one on the door jam it self behind the door pannel about 4 inches from the top of the window if i remember correctly. Theres another bolt inside the door it self.. why i have no idea but its a bitch. Its a 10mm bolt you can also use a philips head, but they are tourqued pretty good so i would choose a socket. Now this bolt you can only get to with your window all the way up door panel removied and the plastic and tar peeled back. it is behind the window still so you need to get your socket and rachet behind there.. as soon as you untourque it you can pretty much take it off with your finger. Now there will be those two rods .. theres one with an orange clip and a whiteish clearish clip. The clear clip has been known to be really hard to get off.. ill try to get a picture of that too so you can see more clearley how to go about removeing the rod. But you basicly push it towards the door jam and it should pop right out.. if that does not work.. i belive you push it up. I will check it out tomorrow to be sure. The orange clip is very easy to remove you just pull it away from the door.. if the clip doesn't come out with the rod thats alright you can take it off with the handle. Now you your handle should come right out.

I hope this helps and i didn't leave anything out. If you need another handle i have a 97 Eagle Talon handle (black) without the clips that i can sell you for 10 + shipping. I can get picture of that too if you would like.

I will try to get pictures up tomorrow.

Here is a tech topic that might help but in my opinion it's missing a step that makes unhooking the plastic pushrod clip really easy.

After the handle is loose and you can start to lift it out of the door slightly, I then unscrew the actual latch in the door (three screws in the end of the door). You want the latch to be loose. Now when you lift the handle it will come out of the door just enough for the rod with that little white clip to be right in front of you and there's no longer a need to reach inside the door to try to unhook or re-hook it.

I make those door handle hinge repair kits so trust me, I've worked on a few of these.

Provided you didn't completely destroy your old handles in anger when they broke you can re-use the old ones.

That's the beauty of the repair kit. No high cost for new handles and costs for painting them either.

$15 for the kit and that includes shipping. One kit will do both handles. You'll need a small tube of JB Weld.

I just changed my driver's side door handle today and it wasn't too bad. It took me about an hour and a half to do but it's because it was my first time. I could probably do it next time in 30mins. It's really easy. One thing that I found helped was unscrewing the 3 star bolts on the side of the door. Once you take these bolts out you can lower the dual bars that run along the door and this will give you more space to work. Another thing that I found also helped was putting the ring that goes around the keyhole on halfway so that once you slip the key lock into the new door handle all you have to door is push the ring a little and it snaps right into place. I put the key lock and bar into the new door handle from the outside and then just pushed it into place and bolted everything back up. It also took me long to do because after I peeled the sticky plastic off of the door I kind of stared at everything for a while just to see how everything worked so that I wouldn't break anything.

Those inserts are sweet, might be picking me up some, but I got a question, whatever happened to those metal door handles that they had a group buy on a while back?? Anyone ever get them or install them??
