I have done a hood strut conversion for my car, I am looking to see if there would be any interest in some kits. The kit would include gas struts, special ball joints and stainless hardware for each side of the hood. Installation involves drilling two holes and a little bit of wrench turning, very basic install. The kit would be around $60. Right now I kit I have made for my car is for a VIS carbon fiber hood, but will work on any carbon fiber hood that weighs in the neigbourhood of 20 pounds. I do NOT have a kit made yet for a stock hood, if there is enough interest I will make a kit for a stock hood. If this is something that interests you guys, let me know.

Redline tuning does a couple of kits starting around the same price for stock hoods. It mounts differently than your setup but it might be something to consider.

Yep, Redline tuning makes 'em I plan on getting a set after a majority of the body work is done, i'm tired of working around the hood prop...

Interesting, I had never seen the Redline kit before. Right off the bat I can tell installation with my kit would be much easier. The Redline kit involves drilling into the hood and the fenders/body a number of times, and riveting brackets to them. My kit involves drilling one hole in the hinges on either side, and uses the existing fender bolt for the other attachment, no brackets necessary. This also means that in the closed position, all the force from the shock is taken by the hinge. In the redline kit, that force will be transferred to the hood. On a regular hood, thats not a big deal, but on a carbon fiber hood I dont think thats a great idea.

just outta curiosity would a kit like this help at all in preventing a hood from flying off? i mean if the latch fails now you've got two extra mounting points holding it to the car...

Yes, the pics are of the install on my car. I decided to use a threaded ball stud on the hood instead of the top brackets they supplied. More trouble but more of a factory look for me. I have since painted the brackets body color so it blends in nicely.

Redline offers about the best detailed instructions and packaging I have seen from an aftermarket company. Very top notch in my book.

No, these gas struts would only slow down the hood folding back over your roof by about a 1/4 second. They won't prevent a disaster unless your hood pops up when your only going 10 mph.
