I have to replace both air bags, due to an accident which occured about 4 months ago. Is it complicated doing the job? I went to mitsubishi and they quoted me about 850 for both airbags, but the actual labor would bring me over 1100. I dont want to spend that much!

I was thinknin of cutting off the cover for the (passenger) air bag and just using it to cover the hole where the airbag unit used to be! Only problem is, the Glove compartment latch is some how interlinked with the airbag unit, so now I can't close my glove compartmnet!

Well if it was a claim on insurance you will more than likely have to have verification of some sort that they were replaced. Its not that hard to do though. I don't recommend leaving any out, but people do it though inspection time will be a pita imo. If you deside to go that route though and don't mind a painted (whatever color) glove box I can do a lock change that doesn't require the stock latch.I have a few extra glove boxs already converted and in primer.

Yea I didnt claim it on insurance! My parents thought the accident would BLOW up the rate! So I did all the body repairs by myself.

Originally I wanted to put in new air bags, just for safety reasons. With the way things are looking, I dont think I will be able to afford them!

I still have the original Glove box, I was wondering if that latch would be simple to put in and if it would work with my glove box. Thanks.

Also, Im located in California! So I deno how hard that would be to help me!

Because I'm the only one I know that does them, I will say its the hardest task to do in the world lol. But I will give you an idea of what I'm talking about (see pic) And as far as gloveboxs I can cut some off the price with an exchange for yours and if you take it in just primer it saves you even more. (sorry for trying to sell here mods)Or just resell your stock one if you decide to get mine. I post a want add for them every so often so just be on the look out for them.

what is all this talk about im lost?? i took my air bag out one my glove box works fine??? no problems at all, on thing has nothing to do with the other unless im missing something. also you can fix the airbags your self alot cheeper just make sure you hook everything up correctly however you will have to go to the dealer to get them to reset the srs system only way to get the light to go out properly, but if your in a state like me (fl ) just unplug the srs unit and say the hell with it and the light will go out!!!

There is like a plastic frame that is attached to a metal frame that holds the Glove compartment latch. When i got in my accident, the airbags deployed, totally breaking the plastic frame and raising the metal frame. Now my lock on the glove compartment has a hard time reaching the latch. Then only way I am able to close my glove compartment is if i pratically kick it so that it gets ALL the way up to the latch. I can take pictures if you still don't get it!

Can you bend it back somehow??

I tried to bend it, but I dont have enough room to bend it to the point where the metal frame will stay at the bent position. I tried to take it off, but I dont know how it is connected.

I'll take pictures, so that you guys know exactly what I'm talking about!

The catch for the lock itself is only held on by 2 phillips head screws. It comes right out.
Try slowly closing the glovebox and looking were its going to line up and if it will. I find it hard to believe that mitsu designed the glove box to possibly malufuntion after an air bag deploy so...

It could be the 2 catchs on the lock itself even, I have had like 10 locks here and a few of them were really "sticky" and really didn't snap open after release of the sides.
Also noticed a few that were worn a little on the two "catchs".

The stock lock system is actually pretty percise in how it lines up so if you really are not reaching it first try removing the 2 rubber stoppers on the glove box itself right on the top side, they might be holding you out, also if you look on either side of the glovebox you see two holes, if the tabs they make contact with are bent a little it will hold you out also (you can remove them). It is possible I guess that during the deploy that the dash flex could have moved the contact tabs just enough that when you opened it they were now outta line and would hold the glovebox out.
Also in the catch itself you see a rubber nipple sticking out might want to take that out because that also will stop you if your a tad outta line. I will add pics in a minute to show you were I'm talking about, and what to check.
And last resort take out the catch and try shimming it out with washers under the bracket or moving it below although I think you will find your problem and not have to do this much work for it to latch again.

the hole and rubber tab are on both sides of the glovebox


the tab on the left goes into the glovebox for alignment if its off it will be outta line, the tabs are on both sides make sure there lining up and not stopping you from closing all the way.Also take note of the rubber nipple in the latch
