I'm saying trying because it's not done yet. I made a mold out of fiberglass, and it turned out pretty damn good. This is my first attempt at fiberglassing anything. I will update as I make progress. I filled the creases left from the saran wrap i used to cover the airbag(no it didn't hurt the airbag)with a light skim coat which has been sanded down smooth. The next step is to prime, paint, then wax the mold and lay in the material for the cover. Pop that out and shave it to fit the hole nicely. I'd like to get some clear resin and put a layer of carbon fiber over the finished project, but I may just end up painting it to save the money.
(edit) Top shop said they wouldn't make these unless a whole bunch of people wanted to buy them...so I just decided to make my own.

looks okay, you have some thick ass chunks in there, lol and A LOT of bondo and sanding to do before painting it. i think your crazy though for glassing ur airbag, sucks to be your passenger if you ever get in a accident i guess, bloody nose coming up!

I need someone to make me an aibag cover/replacement to house a 5-7" TV.

lol...I'm not glassing my airbag, that is the mold for an airbag cover. The extra resin is to help stiffen up the outside(inside pics didn't come out(damn camera) A monitor will be going inside...but that will come later. I'm taking the proper precautions for when the airbags are removed. (harnesses that lock on impact) If that doesn't keep me in my seat, then I don't know what would.

looking good so far, but just to clarify.. you ARE removing the airbag from behind the "exploding razor sharp glass shards flying into your pasengers head and body" cover right? :P

just to save you alot of time and pissed off monents later, that airbag flap/ cover whatever you wanna call it bends very easily and im sure you know the fiberglass dont so you might wanna make sure its bent correctly to where its gonna fit perfect or its gonna wind up messed up just my .02 from experience. learned the hard way

Airbags saved my life as well as my friend. I would never take the airbags out of my car if I drove it on the street. You can trust yourself, but you can't trust the other assholes on the road. But, looks good and I hope it turns out for ya.

Word of advice when fiberglassing, add thin smooth coats...saves a lot of sanding and bondo time.

I bet the chunks are due to the fact that you added to much hardner and it started to gum up on you quickly.

OK..let me clear this up again...ITS A MOLD!!!..lol...not a fiberglassed airbag..lol. A mold that I am going to lay fiberglass into(built up thick) and then pop out a cover that will need its edges trimmed a bit to fit in the hole. And maybe if the mold holds up and everything turns out nice I can make MORE. Yes, airbags will be removed before this goes in. The pic from the side is to show how nice the contour of the bottom edge came out.(will be a great fit on any dash) The airbag that I copied is perfect with no warpage. The blobs on top aren't air bubbles...they are blobs of fiberglass that i poured on last to toughen up the outer part of the mold. I put extra hardener in the mix for the tough layer...and it started hardening up too quick. It's a very rigid piece that should hold up pretty well as long as I'm careful with it. I hope that helped, and I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough in the first place. Thankyou for the comments!

in that case great job so far looks good might be interested in one for my tv i just used the factory one and a lot of cutting to do mine looks ok but can be better, would love to see your finished product keep us posted!

Did you have a guide, directions or something to make the mold? Or did you just wing it with some resin and other materials?

it looks like he just laid some fiberglass cloth down over the cover and soaked it with resin. there might have been some hot glue involved to hold the cloth down.

it was as simple as this:
-First I wrapped the underside of the airbag several times w/ saran wrap to keep any stray resin out.
-then I tried wrapping the top in 1 sheet of nonstick aluminum foil(failed to match the contours, so lots of fiberglass wasted)
-then I simply laid 1 wide sheet of saran wrap over the top(got a few wrinkles) and spread resin all over the saran wrap
(wrinkles were easily filled in later with body filler)
-I then laid the fiberglass cloth on top and coated with resin...repeating the process 5 times
-on the last layer I mixed extra hardener with resin to make it harden faster and poured it over the top of everything, but it was hardenenig too quickly and globbed up. I've been busy with personal things and doing the yard today took 6 hrs. of play time away from me, so I'll get back to it before the weekend is gone(hopefully) Thanks for the comments!

Sorry it's been a while, but i finished it today. It hasn't been primed or painted yet, but I popped it out of the mold, and had to sculpt it a little bit. Bad news is that the resin got so hot, it melted the wax and lightly stuck to the mold...therefore, the mold was completely destroyed in the removal process. Oh well, it worked! Here are a couple pics.

Looks okay, but you do understand that you can't put "extra resin" on to make it stiffer, that just makes it crack easier. If you want it stiffer at another layer of mat and resin, or two.

Listen to this guy, he's exactly right. Ive been doing fiberglass and CF for a long time now. You shouldve used some gelcoat and some PVA. You would still have your mold then.

But you learn as you go, lookin good man!! :thumbsup

Oh well :shrugs thanks for the tips. If I ever need to make another mold, I will do it the right way.

dude that looks awsome i think you did a great job its gonna look really good when you paint it. what plans do you have for it? i wish i would have known how to do that stuff cause i just spent hours with the dremel and my factory airbag cover cutting iand fitting my 8" tv screen into it i mean it came out ok but that would have been so much better.

Actually, I wanted to save the details until I was done, but there will be a monitor underneath. You will flip a switch and a geared motor will open the airbag cover(it will be hinged), then the monitor will rotate up from the bottom and level out with the passengers line of sight. Push the button again, and it all goes back into hiding.
I am not kidding, I have almost everything I need to make this work. It will be awesome!

you gotta pm me when your done that sounds sick i had to fuck with my tv to get the right angle for passanger viewing and build it up lots of sanding and cutting but got her done just need to install her now but my screen is fixed it doesnt move and im worried about the sun i live in fla thinking about just tinting my front winshield like 1/3 way down like a sun strip but larger. keep me posted on your work.
