84988, Clicking sounds coming from HID ballast? Posted by jsupetran, May-11-05 07:55 PM
Hey is that normal? I just tested them on my car just to see if they work and they are clicking. Not loud but just wondering if that's normal.

Could be the igniter. I never hear it with mine. I do sometimes hear the electricity going through my balasts, sounds pretty cool sorta like one of those electric transformers that are on those big polls in empty fields.. you know the power towers.. lol.. Just PM me with anymore questions you got dude.. Trust me I was like a newb with HIDs back around November.. Now I'll never go back to halogens.. Tried driving my sisters car one night.. I said fuck this got out of the car and did'nt even bother, I feel really weird when I drive without HIDs its like I'm half blind.

That's just about sure to be the igniter trying to fire the bulb. It's a very high voltage surge used to start the arc in the bulb. If you here it reapeating and the bulb isn't starting then you might have a bad connection or the power could be arcing to ground. The noise is the same sound made by static electricity only much more potent. Don't let it do that very long as it can overheat your ballast. Let it rest awhile, check your system, and try again.
Check your connections and make sure no wires are pinched. The wires going from the ballast/ignitor to the bulbs are usually large high quality silicone covered wires to prevent arcing to ground from cuts or even moisture ingress.
