84720, Dash Rattle, What Have You Done? Posted by DSM_John, May-05-05 09:06 AM
I gutted the interior and painted everything black 2 years ago, but I can't take the infamous Chrysler rattle any longer, it's driving me nuts and is embarrising! I'm thinking of taking the dash out and spraying it with expanding foam to hold all of the HVAC tubing and other plastics in place. Does it work, has anyone done this with a good outcome? Oh, and don't tell me to turn the radio louder, I'm sick of that option. I'll probably lay some dynomat or equivalent product for further deadening to take care of all the other rattles. Thanks. (I searched, so don't flame me)

I've never had this "infamous Chrysler rattle" so I don't know where it comes from, but I'm guessing that expanding foam should get the job done.

Yea, I have it too.. I'm thinking it may be the stock tweeter but I don't know.

hood hinge, it sounds like its the tweeter area but its the hood, grab the back corner and pull up and down. I just wedged a rag/sponge,etc.. in there temp. till I buy a new hinge.

That's what mine was, I put some silicone on the hinge, once it got down in it, the sound stopped. Now it only does it when I am on a bumpy road. But yeah, I did managed to find alot more after that. My driver's side and pass. side doors now rattle. and my hatch rattles sometimes. Oh, and my seat belt started making a weird noise. But I've gotten used to it.

I had some annoying squeaky noises whenever I went over semi-rough roads, and it was driving me crazy. I finally found out that it wasn't the interior at all... it was the black plastic tireguard that came off from the front bumper and was squeking against the plastic. I just re-attached it and the squeaking went away.

My 2GNT had it since day one and I just got used to it as everything else in the stupid car rattled as well. The louder the exhaust the less you notice. :P

I think yours is something different. That doesnt sound like the notorious 2g rattle. It deffintly comes from the passenger side hood/dash vacinity.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to check the hinge as well. Hell, that probably rattles as well as my dash. Ahhh, more to fix!

Chasing rattles in a DSM is like a dog chasing it's tail. Sure you may find one, but then you create 3 more trying to fix the one you found. Just get used to it dude. If my car doesn't squeak and rattle I think there's something wrong.

I had a heat shield spot-weld break loose on my exhaust, and the rattle sounded like it was from the dashboard.

LOL, I can tell how cold it is by what parts of my car are rattling. When it is 43 and below, i get front dash and also the backseat passenger side panel. 43-60 I still get the front dash then sometimes I hear a little coming from near where the seat belt goes behind the panel. 60+ I just get the front dash.... These are just the normal ones. Sometimes you will just hear one and wonder if it has been there all along or if it just started. :twitch

my car rattles constantly...Putting the sub in the rear didnt help out too much either...I've accepted the fact that the interior is going to rattle like a som bitch no matter what I do.

Yep, my hood rattles too. In about 2 weeks when I'm out of school, it'll be time to strip the interior once again. I'll spray the expanding foam and tighten my hinges, I'll let you know if the dash quiets down. As far as the other panels, I've got another idea. Warning, a bit ghetto. I'll probably wrap all of the plastic push-locks with threading tape.:shrug

You state a very good point. It's like the check engine light in most matters. It's not unusual that it is on all the time for alot of us, but you start to worry when it turns off for no apparent reason. Our cars just like to act and ask for attention so if it's not one thing its another. She is going to get you in the end though.

I think that the heatshield-rattle is more common and prevalent than most people think. I can't see all that much in the dashboard rattling, but what do I know?
