hi! well i have a 95 eclipse gs ( www.cardomain.com/id/esteban000e ). and i wanna do something original this summer. I'd like to put a Targa top in my car but i do not wanna take it to a body shop and pay $4000 for it. So i decided to do it my self. now my problem is that i have no idea how to even start.. my question is does anybody know anything about it? what tools should i go and buy and how should i start ? has anyone done this?

Uh, you do realize you're going to destroy your car right? Our cars rely in the structural integrity of the roof to maintain body stability. If you cut the roof apart our cars will twist and shake with every turn or brake you do. Guys with 10pt roll cages and underbody structure still get twist out of this mod. Doing it yourself would be suicide to your car. Especially if you "don't know where to start".

If you do it, make sure you take video because I really want to see your car twist and fall apart.

Yeah, they're all gonna sue Autozone for influencing them.

U'd B looking @ ~$4k as a minimum... I also wanted a targa way back when & did some serious looking @ a bunch of shops, and $4k was the least I found 4 them 2 even wanna talk 2 me. If U're determined & U've got the cash (I didn't), still go 2 a reputable shop as they will warrant their work. That way U know it's done properly & that it won't twist, and if it were 2 twist, it'll B corrected.

P.S.
If U're still intent on doing it yourself, the ONLY way "you" could do it w/out really knowing what U're doing (& I use that Xtremely loosely)... is go buy a Spyder & cut the top off a coupe & weld it on the spyder. Realize how much weight U're also adding 2 the car.

save the $4000 and use it for a down payment on an MRS or a 350Z convertible.

I won't talk shit on you becasue I think our cars look badass with targa tops. I have only seen two people pull it off and even then they had big ass roll cages in there car that consumed everything, and would just take the feel of the car away from me. I suggest just not fucking with it, because if you mess it up there is no turning back. If you want to do something big this summer with your car turbo it or something.

Like everyone said....the structural integrity of the car goes down a lot when you get rid of the roof.

The Spyders have extra support in the chasis to counteract the missing roof...hence why they weigh more than us. If you do decide to even do it...go to a shop... but even still...

well...ill tell you now...youll fuck your car up...plain and simple. this has been discussed many many times over. do a search. the only cars that this is even plausable is a trailer bitch show car...thats it. you will lose drivability of your car. yes, there are people that have done it....but have you ever seen them driving down the roads? this isnt like installing a sunroof or whatever. this is serious business. when you hack out part of the key structural integrity of the car..your asking for problems. targa top cars are BUILT to have a section of the roof missing..ours isnt.

and if your asking where to start...dont EVEN attemtp to begin this. put the sawzall down and walk away from the car!
