I have a cloth Backseat out of a GST that I want to dye Solid black. Has anyone done this before and if so what did you use and how did it hold up? thanks

I dyed my headliner. From a distance it was okay but up close it was very uneven and crunchy to the touch. I used the spray cloth dye stuff from Autozone. I hated it after a short period of time.

Are there any other better dyes that people have tried? I'd like to dye my grey interior to a two tone grey/black.

Any good fabric store should carry professional dye. Try places like Wal Mart as well. Get the dye that you use in the washing machine or soak in a tub. It will settle very even and stay soft if you use it right. If dying black you may have to dye it twice cause it may come out a bit purple the first time.

How would I do that with the back seat though? I guess I will have to take the seat covers off? Has anyone done this and it looked good? If so can you post before and afters please? Thanks

I would just save up and get it uhpolstered. It will not look all that great with any type of dye you use. I know that isn't what you really wanted to hear, but I have basically been there done that with almost every interior endevor mentioned on this board.

Plus it wears off and have heard that some during the hot summer months have had some come off on their cloths.

I think if you shop around you could get the whole back bench seat done for around $80 to $150 depending on material and the shop you go with.

You will thank yourself in the long run...or just have a bench seat cover made. Either or would be better then the dye. I dyed my carpet for a quick fix and thats exactly what dye is, just a quick fix that you have to keep refixing and refixing, over and over again.

If you are really set on dyeing it then go with what YOU really want and can afford.

I've dyed everything from bedsheets, to couch cushions to curtains, chair covers... Generally black. I've never had a problem with the color coming off on anything and it looks good as well. It all depends on the product you use.

It is a pain to get the seat covers off though...

has anyone thought or tried to dye there carpet black? i got the stock grey carpet and i have been thinkin about taking it out and dyeing it or using some type of spray paint to make it black cuz the grey has all kinds of stains in it and i have tried to shampoo it and they will still not come out, any suggestions?

Yup, very very crusty. It's not like a liquid fabric dye that Jen is talkking about. It's more like crunchy crusty spray paint.

Mine never got crusty when I did it but you gotta think of it this way, whenever you vacuum any kind of carpet and you move it in different directions its looks different right? Well the same thing happens when you use a spray dye on your carpet, your only gettin one side of the weave, It took me about 4 coats going back and combing the stuff in each time. For the carpet I would just got buy a BIG bucket and get some liquid dye and soak it in there and let it try, You might wanna bleach the carpet first THEN dye it so you get a nice dark color.

I have only used the Duplicolor fabric and vinyl dye on my carpet, but in the heavy traffic areas it rubs off and goes back to the original color. I might try using the liquid dye. I will clean and scrub the carpet and then try to dye it with liquid dye.

I just found this site with actual carpet dye. Anyone every use this stuff?

Like I said earlier, I'd use dye in the washing machine for seat covers, but that's obviously not an option for carpet...

My mom runs a dry cleaning company. They do some dying. You guys might wanna check with your local dry cleaners as well.

Why don't you just buy a carpet in the color you want? They make carpet for our cars in everthing from black to safety orange :shrug

yea for real and cheap also, if you figure you need to take seats and what not out to do the whole thing anyways. You might as well replace it.

I have been contemplating replacing it, but it costs like 200+ to buy the replacement carpet. It cost like $10 to dye it!

Uh, it's costs $100 for replacement carpet in any color you want. Consistant, solid, non-fading color that's new and looks good.

Is it pre-cut? How do you hold it down? Will it mold?

I am referring to the Pre molded replacement carpet...plus you have to pay for shipping! Plus I have heard about depending upon where you order it from the fitment might not be very good!

If I can dye it for $10 and have it come out the same, why not give it a try?

I just stopped by a fabric store and they recommend Recon for dying carpet. The lady said that it's fairly easy. You get powder, mix it with water and brush/rub it into the carpet. She said it's effective and will cover great (especially if you're going darker and staying in the same color group). Here's a link I found:

It's not pre-cut but other than that it's exactly like factory carpet. There is some cutting and stretching but it's pre-molded. "Will it mold?" I'm guessing you're asking about biological mold and not "forming". Anything will mold if it gets wet and isn't taken care of, but if you mean forming it's pre-formed. Just be careful when you're cutting. It's easiest to put your old carpet on top of the new and just trace out the pattern. If you don't there's a lot of second guessing and hoping.

It's alright. And your factory carpet isn't "held down" by anything either other than interior parts installed over it (seats, door sills, center console, etc)

I didn't think so. I just find it hard to belive that an aftermarket carpet would lay flat against all surfaces. I would picture it bubbling and bending up in certain areas. I've never really looked into it though...

I'm still contemplating whether my spare 1G seats will fit into my 2G :)
